The traditional start to the academic year is in the fall, and there’s no shortage of fall events at LIFE to get the academic year started right. First up was Fall CE, our annual continuing education weekend extravaganza like no other that allows 1,500 chiropractors, regardless of the college they attended, free access to continuing education credits. Fall CE is not just that, however, it also is a time to reconnect with former classmates, hear about the newest happenings at LIFE and revitalize your spirit for Chiropractic. Check out some of the highlights from this year’s event on pages 4 and 5, and make sure to not miss out on next year’s festivities.

Also, the second installment of our LIFE Vision seminar was held Oct. 18–19 at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel and Convention Center and was even more of a hit than the first. This two-day event spearheaded by chiropractor extraordinaire Sharon Gorman, D.C., is a time for chiropractors to connect and recharge their minds to the Lasting Purpose of Chiropractic: To Give, To Do, To Love, To Serve – Out of a Sense of Abundance.

Someone who fits this motto to a T is our featured alumnus for this issue of YEL, Joe Lupo, D.C., a Board of Trustee member and donor to the University who is instrumental in giving back to LIFE so that we can grow the profession to

new heights. You won’t want to miss out on his inspiring story on pages 6 and 7.

As a lot of you know, the fall issue of YEL is one I look forward to every year, as I have the pleasure of sharing my annual President’s Report for the University. It is great to check out all who are making a difference in helping LIFE stay at the top. Included, you will find a plethora of vital information to the health of our University, so take a look at pages 9–16 to see all the details.

Also, check out the feature on my longtime colleague and friend, Cynthia Boyd, D.C., on page 17, highlighting her tenure at LIFE. She has been instrumental in the success of LIFE over the past 18 years, and those efforts have been deservedly recognized by her recent promotion to vice president of enrollment and marketing, where I know she will continue her excellent work.

Life University has organized a business advisors group for the College of Chiropractic. the group looks at health care, political shifts, cultural trends and other influences that may alter the fabric of business and society.

ALABAMA Our summer travel kicked off just down the road in Birmingham, ala., at the alabama state Chiropractic association’s (asCa) annual convention. What a weekend! Drs. Myrias Womack (’80), Fred Bryant (’84) and Aaron Fletcher (’01) stopped by the booth and received LIFE prizes. In addition, more than 30 LIFE supporters eagerly packed the room for an early LIFE-sponsored breakfast. We especially enjoyed connecting with Judy Lipka (’82), president of the asCa, and all of our other alumni and friends.

SoUTH CAroLInA It had been years since the LIFE team had ventured to south Carolina, and boy, was it was good to be back! mary Ellen Leffard, alumni relations manager, and rob scott, Vp for academic affairs, headed to the sunny beaches of myrtle Beach for a jam-packed weekend of reminiscing at the south Carolina Chiro-practic association’s annual convention. Our reception was a huge success, and we enjoyed meeting so many new faces. We want to give a big thank you to Drs. During our LIFE-sponsored lunch, rob scott, Vp for academic affairs, spoke in regard to how LIFE is advancing Chiropractic and supporting the field doctor. We were able to connect with many local faces including Life University Board of trustees Chairman Deborah Pogrelis (’78). In addition, Dr. Awais Butt (’04) was inducted as president of the GCC at the annual dinner.

FLorIDA august was one busy month for our LIFE team! Our first stop was in palm Beach, where more than 50 alumni and friends packed the room for a LIFE-sponsored reception during the Florida Chiropractic society’s annual convention. the evening was filled with

camaraderie and a presentation by Greg Harris, Vp for university advancement, which kickstarted a new Lasting purpose Campaign. In addition, Drs. Eric Plasker (’85), Sharon Gorman (’84) and B.J. Harman (’80) spoke on behalf of LIFE.

In the meantime, alumni relations manager mary Ellen Leffard traveled all across Florida, meeting and visiting alumni and friends from st. augustine to Orlando. some of her visits included Drs. Danita Heagy (’82), Brenda Dukes (’84), Jennifer Bevis (’99) and Douglas Henderson (’83). Her road trip concluded with a very successful LIFE-sponsored luncheon during the Florida Chiropractic association’s annual convention. many thanks to each of the 75 supporters who came!

Fall CE Recap his year’s Fall CE event was a success in many ways. We had almost 10 percent more attendees than last year, and more of them increased the amount of time they spent on campus taking classes, attending events or enjoying their classmates and the campus itself. In addition to CE classes, there were eight special events throughout the weekend, and those who attended had a blast! Our attendance on Wednesday doubled from the previous year and thursday rose to the attendance level of Friday, a big improvement from previous years. not only were the numbers up, but the excitement and energy was amplified as

well, with special events taking place and new initiatives being introduced. Just a few of the tangible results from Fall CE are listed below:

• 1,550 registered chiropractors (second largest chiropractic CE event) were on campus with 1,400+ attending classes: Wed. = 600; thur.–sat. = 1,000 each; sun. = 675.

• 277 faculty and staff hosts worked more than 1,662 hours during Fall CE.

• 12 nutritionists and 40 athletic trainers attended courses for their profession-specific licensure requirements.

• 56 corporate sponsors and vendors were present on campus.

• 7 alumni class reunions were held.

• the Class of 1983 gift was $12,800.

• the Class of 1978 gift was $307,000.

• $17,000 was donated from the “Big Enchilada” and presented at the president’s address and Luncheon.

• there were four new president’s Circle donors.

• several doctors became interested in recruiting students to LIFE and even becoming LIFEforce 1000 doctors.

• LIFE signed a partnership with Vitalogics as a research partner with the intention to provide LIFE with patient data for patient-based outcomes research and about $50,000 per year.

the alumni relations Department hosted a reception for all our state representatives in socrates Café, with more than 30 people in attendance. this is a new program initiated this year to help the alumni relations Department stay in contact with our alumni and friends. We have 27,000 alumni, so we need a tribe of representatives in each state. If you have time and would like

1978 was a good year, as evidenced by the turnout for the dinner celebrating its 35th Class reunion. Joe Lupo, D.C., and his wife sandy were in attendance, along with our Board of trustee Chair Deborah pogrelis, D.C. Everyone enjoyed reminiscing about their time together in school. a video was presented and a slideshow of the “good times” was shown. Hair has changed, but the faces remain the same!

the Class of 1983 got their day started off with a great breakfast and fellowship. Folks took to the microphone like pros and shared some wonderful memories. Larry marchese, D.C., president of the International alumni association, shared

a few of the ways the alumni could get involved with the University and was also a part of the group that collectively donated more than $12,700 to various funds at LIFE. We thank you for your support!

Dr. riekeman shared his vision for the newest program for the profession: ampLIFEied. this landmark campaign is designed to bring Chiropractic to the proverbial “tipping point” and become part of the mainstream. In order to do this, we need to set up a network of 1,000 doctors who each have 1,000 followers on social media such as Facebook, twitter, etc. this network is called ampLIFEied. through it, we can disseminate the chiropractic message to millions with the click of a button. On saturday, the president’s Circle hosted a luncheon for members and prospective members. some 80 DCs were in attendance. Kevin Fogarty, D.C., served as master of ceremonies and introduced LIFE president Dr. Guy riekeman, who thanked those present for their support of LIFE and the advancement of Chiropractic.

Dr. riekeman explained how president’s Circle funds are utilized to help support LIFE Leadership Weekends and also to take advantage of emerging opportunities to advance the profession that can’t be planned for in the operational budget of the University. One example he cited was the two commercials LIFE broadcasted nationally on nBC and in the stadium during the Collegiate rugby Championships in philadelphia this past spring. this chance to gain such widespread exposure for LIFE and Chiropractic would have been squandered if not for the availability of president’s Circle support to fund the opportunity. DCs Jay Handt, Charles ribley and norm Colby also spoke about the importance of providing support to LIFE through president’s Circle membership. ribley was especially passionate in stating, “Life University is mY University. Life University is YOUr University. Be proud of it. support it!” He went on to implore each attendee to recruit two new members in the next year. Four DCs joined the president’s Circle following the event. as you can see, Fall CE is an event that not only helps LIFE’s alumni and friends get the necessary CE credits that they need, but is also an event that helps LIFE continue to be the thought leader in Chiropractic. It is through the generous gifts given by our alumni and friends at events such as these that allow us to advance the profession.

most universities have stated principles and values, but there is something special about LIFE’s Lasting purpose. this pillar is actually lived by LIFE graduates, faculty and staff, and they make it their lives’ work to serve the community and care for people.

Few people embody Lasting purpose more completely than Joseph Lupo, D.C. (’78). From the moment he stepped onto the LIFE campus through the 36 years he has spent in practice, Lupo strives each day to live out the principles he learned during his student years.

Like many DCs, Lupo came to Chiropractic as a second profession. “I grew up in Detroit and graduated from Wayne state University majoring in math,” Lupo says. “I worked in construction to pay my way and in the process became a general contractor. Upon graduation, I continued in my successful business, which evolved in the seven years it took for me to earn my degree.” Fast-forward five years, when in February 1975, a friend of Lupo’s who had heard a presentation by several of Life College’s co-founders at Wayne state and subsequently decided to attend LIFE asked him to tag along. “that was the last thing on my mind. I didn’t even know what a chiropractor was,” says Lupo. “I

thought he was crazy, but the suggestion intrigued me.”

Upon arriving in marietta, Lupo and his friend attended a new patient orientation presented by John Hofmann, D.C., one LIFE’s co-founders. What he heard there changed his life. “the concept of innate intelligence and that the body is a self-healing organism, and sick people get well by spinal adjustments done by hand really excited me,” says Lupo. With that excitement and a renewed sense of purpose, Lupo’s life changed course completely, and he knew he had to go to LIFE. “Between February and July, we moved into our new home, our baby was born, I sold my business, sold our home

and moved to atlanta. Whew!” he says. “people thought I was nuts,” he adds, of all the major life changes he and his family made in a span of only five months. “I loved it.” Lupo graduated as a member of LIFE’s third-ever class in June 1978.

By the beginning of the next year, the Lupos had moved to back to michigan to be closer to their families, and he had a practice up and running in roseville. In the spirit of doing and giving, and imitating what he learned from both Hofmann and Dr. sid Williams, Lupo gave a new patient orientation in his first week of practice (“Even [though] I was scared to death to speak to a group,” he says) and has been doing that ever since. “a group new patient orientation, to me, serves two purposes,” explains Lupo. “First, to educate the patients because they will never hear our chiropractic story anywhere else. It’s their only chance. so I feel it is our responsibility to tell it. When I heard it, it changed my life. second, if you are willing to tell it to a group, no matter the size, it adds credibility to our message.”

Lupo’s efforts more than paid off. He saw 99 patients in his first two weeks of practice, and business has been booming for more than 35 years. “my practice has always been busy, I believe, because I focused on the patients’ needs instead of

mine,” he explains, capturing the essence of serving his community that is inherent in Lasting purpose. “I try to incorporate Lasting purpose personally and professionally by, as Dr. Ian Grassam used to teach, ‘reporting for duty’ every day to help someone,” he says. His practice, which now includes his son, Jeffrey, and his daughter, Jessie, who both received their DC degrees from LIFE, operates on that simple principle.

the combination of a LIFE education and Lasting purpose has carried Lupo’s career to enviable heights. In turn, he has given back to the profession, institution and people he feels have gotten him to where he is. “Dr. sid taught us a Universal Law: ‘What you give comes back multiplied seven-fold,’” Lupo says. “I also believe that whatever you believe in, you must support.” Because he loves LIFE and everything that it represents, he makes his support felt in ways financial and otherwise—as a member of the Board of trustees, a LIFEforce 1000 doctor and a donor whose support was instrumental in carrying LIFE through a period of uncertainty. “I believe that, along with a group of chiropractic colleagues, we saved the chiropractic principle (which lives at LIFE) in 2004 by saving Life University. [We helped] Dr. Chuck ribley and our then new president, Dr. Guy riekeman launch a huge fundraising effort with $100,000 donations that encouraged many more significant donations totaling several million dollars. plus, the effort led to many student referrals to build our enrollment back to more than 2,500 students,” he says. Fortunately, for generations of students yet to come, Lupo’s generosity did not stop once LIFE was back

on its feet. In conjunction with the 20/20 Vision strategic plan, the Lupos recently pledged $300,000 for improvements to the lower rugby field, which will be named for their family as a result.

their gift is significant, as it serves as the campaign’s lead gift and pushes the total raised to date to more than $425,000, approximately 50 percent of the goal. the Lupos hope that this will spur additional gifts toward the goal, from both LIFE’s rugby alumni and non-rugby alumni and friends. While Lupo never played rugby, he understands that the international attention LIFE’s rugby program is getting through various media outlets (WsJ, nBC sports, etc.) has a positive impact on the general public in terms of their views on both Chiropractic and LIFE. as more recognition occurs and universities like Florida, Ohio state and notre Dame step foot on campus to play our team, it is vital to have high quality rugby facilities that reflect the high quality product that is on the field.

In addition to providing financial support, Lupo has also been a firm believer in clearing a path for students to find their way to the profession. “since my passion is to change the world through Chiropractic, I have always shared the chiropractic story and encouraged people to enter the profession,” he says. as a result, he has referred several hundred students to LIFE, who in turn have gone into the world to live out Lasting purpose of their own, which perpetuates the positive cycle. “By doing this, I feel as I am reaching hundreds of thousands more people to become chiropractic

patients and live a drug-free chiropractic lifestyle,” he says.

Getting the most out of life, says Lupo, requires a 100 percent commitment, and loving what you do. to that end, he has committed himself to being a leader in the profession. Being involved with the International Chiropractors association, the michigan Chiropractic Council (which later became the michigan association of Chiropractors), as well as his various positions at LIFE has given Lupo the opportunity to be among other chiropractic leaders. “[I have learned so much from them],” he says, “and [that] has made me a better person.” He emphasizes that the only way to effect change is to get involved and fight for it.

the combination of Lasting purpose and technical skill that he learned at LIFE has made Lupo a force to be reckoned with in the profession. “By totally internalizing chiropractic philosophy and the adjusting techniques I learned at LIFE, [I have had] confidence in what I do in my office,” he says. “I believe the work ethic combined with enthusiasm I learned from Dr. sid helped me attract and retain patients.”

Lupo also remains confident that the basic principles of Lasting purpose—giving, doing, loving and serving out of a sense of abundance—are the surest way to personal and professional success, as well as a feeling of fulfillment, no matter what life may bring. “I don’t see Chiropractic as a job,” he says, “it’s my life and I love it.” Lasting purpose has also helped Lupo know that the path he has followed has been the right one for him.

You would have to be living under a rock to not have heard about the recent success of Life University’s rugby program. after all, the teams have received invaluable exposure for the past two years during the nationally televised Collegiate rugby Championship and have had many victories on the field. as a result of their success and stellar performances, they have done an outstanding job raising the national consciousness about LIFe and Chiropractic.

Considering everything the rugby program has done for the University, it is only fitting that it is now the beneficiary of the next phase of LIFE’s strategic plan, the 20/20 Vision. With a focus on academics, research and rugby, the “Investing in Excellence” portion of the plan has already raised more than $5 million and boosted LIFE’s national profile. In 2011, Life University broke into U.S. News & World Report’s list of the most affordable private higher learning institutions. the academic portion of the plan ups the ante by helping LIFE expand its offerings, boost enrollment and attract even more quality students. the fundraising campaign is only 20 percent away from achieving its fundraising goal, so it is clear that members of the LIFE community are responding to the campaign with their financial support.

With such an exciting future ahead for the program, the rugby campaign promises to be no different. Because the rugby program has become such a pow-erhouse and more spectators and fans are coming out to watch them play, the team’s facilities need to be upgraded to match both their skill and the increased interest in the sport. this portion of the campaign focuses on the renovation of the lower rugby field. Field improvements like perimeter drainage piping to prevent standing water, curbing, fencing, the installation of synthetic turf, new goal posts, a storage building and a midfield logo will make the field as competitive as the team. In addition to making the rugby field more user-friendly for the home team, the improvements will also make a lasting positive impression on visiting teams and their fans.

a goal of $800,000 has been set for this phase of the campaign, and with a lead gift of $300,000 from Dr. Joe and sandy Lupo, more than $425,000 has been raised to date. In addition to knowing they have put their team one step closer to having a world-class playing field, donors can also have their contribution recognized through the plan’s naming opportunities. take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to support your school and its athletic pursuits.

As the calendar turns over to another new fiscal year, we find ourselves in a transition mode, both as a profession and as a university. Both are going from “survival” mode to “thrival” mode.

As a profession, we have spent, by necessity, much of our first 100+ years in a survival mode. From the very beginning when D.D. and B.J. Palmer birthed Chiropractic, they faced harsh criticism from the medical profession, the press and therefore from the public. Facing an uphill battle, they persevered and “survived.” That mentality seemed to permeate the climate of the profession for the next century.

But today, we have a perfect storm-type of scenario. The Affordable Care Act (aka ObamaCare) has caused many individuals, companies and even entire populations to rethink health and the delivery of care. Combine that with Chiropractic’s increasing awareness and use by the public, and we have an opportunity to march ever closer to the proverbial

tipping point, when the fringe becomes the norm. The profession is poised to be the health care leader for the next century and beyond. Thus, from survival to thrival.

At Life University we find ourselves at a similar crossroads. Since 2008, we have once again established ourselves as the largest chiropractic college in the world. And while we’ve maintained that status, the downward trends in both the economy and in higher education enrollment could have forced us to be conservative and vigilant as we move the University toward its 20/20 Vision.

From Survival to Thrival

• Finished the year with revenues of $900,000 in excess of budget and expenses $2.4 million less than budget, producing a positive change in net assets and an improved cash position.

• Eighth consecutive year where financial performance was better than budgeted.

• Received $300,000 gift commitment from Dr. Joe and Sandy Lupo for the Lower Rugby Field Renovations campaign.

• Received $100,000 donation from Mr. Rich Giuli and Dr. Amie Bend for the Generations project.

• Received $25,000 donation from the Dr. Tex Rabourn Estate to establish an endowed scholarship.

• Undergraduate rugby team won the Division 1-A national championship.

• Men’s Club rugby team won the Division One national championship.

• Hosted more than 35 regional alumni and friends events.

• Hosted more than 1,600 chiropractors at the 2012 Fall CE Event.

• Supported a dozen community organizations with volunteer and financial assistance.

• Re-established the State Representative program to increase the outreach and communication between LIFE and its alumni and friends.

• Established the Gateway Ceremony for chiropractic students beginning student clinic.

• Opened the Lasting Purpose Garden in Lyceum Park to recognize graduated classes and preserve the pillar of Lasting Purpose on campus.

Zach Miller, a junior from Marietta, Ga., is an undergraduate student majoring in exercise science and a standout member of Life University’s powerhouse rugby program. His father, Trevor Miller, had no affiliation with LIFE before his son enrolled, but he has now become one of the University’s most generous parents. “Our family has always believed in holistic health and chiropractic care,” says Miller. “I want to support LIFE and help others succeed.”

Miller believes it is important for more parents of students at LIFE, regardless of whether they attended the University or not, to support their child’s school. “They can support any academic or athletic program—don’t look to see results today—think about supporting for the future, for others. My support and theirs are examples for their kids to support when they are able.”

Miller’s attitude toward giving has been passed on to him by his own family, as his mother still supports the college that he attended. He knows how much his education has been worth in his own life, and it’s important for him to continue the cycle of giving to the next generation.

“LIFE was the best place for Zach to go because of the quality of the rugby program and because the exercise science program fit with his career aspirations. I am glad to support the University that is helping him succeed.”

Young Alumnus Makes Giving a Priority

Life University alumnus Michael Carnes, D.C. (’06), was born into a chiropractic family in Long Island, N.Y., where he now has an individual practice called Corrective Chiropractic that he opened in March 2013. Despite being one of LIFE’s younger alumnus not even a year into his individual practice, Carnes has made it a priority to give back to LIFE through the University’s Realizing The Vision Capital Campaign. “I wanted to give out of my own heart because without Life University, I wouldn’t be practicing at all or have received the education, technique and philosophy that I acquired there,” explains Carnes.

Carnes is a firm believer in perfecting his technique, so he attends numerous seminars to further educate himself and see what is going on in the profession. It just so happened to be a seminar he attended at Parker University that helped affirm his commitment to giving back to LIFE. “I went

to a seminar at Parker (University), and they had a luncheon for LIFE alumni at which Dr. Riekeman spoke. It really inspired me; he is a powerful speaker.”

From that time on, Carnes has made a commitment to give back, even if it takes some sacrifices here and there. “I highly encourage young alumni to give back to LIFE,” says Carnes. “Without the University, we couldn’t be where we are in our practices today. There are people and students in need, and by giving back, we are able to help the world that needs to be corrected from subluxation.”

Cynthia Boyd exudes a Passion for LIFe

Like many successful chiropractors, Cynthia Boyd’s, d.C., path to the profession began ominously, with a life-changing injury. Shortly after earning her bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of tennessee at Martin, Boyd was injured while waterskiing.

as a result of her injury, Boyd developed sciatica. anyone who has suffered from sciatica can attest to its resulting pain, weakness, numbness or tingling. It can start in the lower back and extend down your leg to your calf, foot or even your toes.

Boyd immediately began seeing a chiropractor nearby in tennessee and was deeply intrigued about the profession. “I got really into it and asked hundreds of questions during my visits, until one day my chiropractor asked me, ‘Why don’t you become a chiropractor?’” says Boyd.

after completing her undergraduate work and starting on a master’s degree, Boyd’s uncertainty about starting a new venture made her hesitant at first; however, after much thought and encouragement from her chiropractor, Boyd decided to attend palmer College of Chiropractic in January of 1987. after graduating in 1989, she immediately moved to atlanta because she wanted to be in a big city in the south and began practicing for the next 14 years—her first year as an associate and the subsequent 13 in her own practice.

chiropractic college just down the road in marietta. nonetheless, after several years in practice, one of her patients decided to become a chiropractor. she began at LIFE and told Boyd there was a need for faculty. By this time, Boyd had met other chiropractors who also worked at LIFE and was very drawn to the prospect.

Boyd took heed of that feeling and began working as a faculty clinician in 1995, supervising LIFE students with their internship work while also continuing to work at her own practice. “It was the best of both worlds,” notes Boyd. “I was able to work with students on their technique skills and clinical approach while also taking that experience into my own practice as far as educating my patients.”

In 2003, Boyd was asked to be chief of staff of clinics at LIFE under Ben Despain, D.C., LIFE’s president at the time. With this huge opportunity came a large time committment, and there was no way that Boyd could maintain her practice while also performing her new duties, so she went full steam ahead into her new venture. “Everyone will tell you that there is an energy at LIFE, and I’ve been attracted to that since the first time I walked on the campus,” explains Boyd on having no regrets about leaving her practice and working at LIFE.

throughout her tenure, Boyd went through several role changes, includ-ing working in the Executive Office as an executive assistant to the president, serving as the head of Development and alumni relations and working in the Life University sport science Institute. now and for the past three years, Boyd has worked with the Enrollment and market-ing departments and was just recently

named the vice president for enrollment and marketing after serving in an interim role in this position for some time. “It was very much appreciated,” says Boyd. “It’s always good to hear that someone has confidence in your job performance.”

Boyd credits much of her success to getting good people in place and counting on them to get the job done. “Our enrollment and marketing teams have the expertise to excel in their areas. I help keep the big picture in focus for us so that we continue to move our areas forward and achieve the goals within the University’s strategic plan.”

Boyd loves what she does because she loves spreading the philosophy of vitalism, and that’s been LIFE’s mission since its inception in 1974. she also loves seeing new students come to LIFE with the same passion she holds. “We are looking for students with a purpose, and it’s our job to find them.”

“to me, there are three things that make LIFE great: a big compelling vision, the people and the leadership,” explains Boyd. “We have big plans and envi-sion those things happening. We want to spread the word about our programs, particularly the under-graduate and master’s programs, which many people don’t associ-ate with LIFE. most people think of us as a chiropractic college, but our philosophy is translated into many other degree programs as well.”

Dr. Darren Bell (’91) has been busy adjusting many of the musicians that come to his area in Buffalo, n.Y., for concerts. He has provided chiropractic care backstage at events featuring Carrie Underwood, martina mcBride, George strait, the Zombies and Justin Bieber. Bell is a member of the new York Chiropractic Council. He also founded the WnY Chapter of “the Band of Brothers” chiropractic group. He regularly attends and speaks at national chiropractic conferences and served as a peer reviewer for the Council on Chiropractic practice in the establishment of international chiropractic practice guidelines.

Dr. Tania (Messina) Howard (’91) is taking her show on the road! though she still sees patients a few hours a week, most of her time is spent creating content to spread positive, healthy and humorous messages to the masses. Her website, drtania.com, will bring good, solid health and wellness advice from an “every girl” perspective, to its readers. Howard has done extensive postgraduate work in the fields of prenatal and pediatric care, nutrition, exercise, stress management and family wellness. she also has been profiled in the Washington Post Magazine and other trade and regional publications.

Congratulations to Dr. Awais Butt (’04) and his wife tabby as they welcomed an additional baby boy, Zayne Butt, to their family on april 30. Dr. Butt was also inducted as president of the Georgia Chiropractic Council on July 20. He maintains a private practice in Douglasville, Ga.

Congratulations to Deborah Lancaster (’06) on the birth of her granddaughter, naomi Brooke salmon, on aug. 13.

Drs. Francisco (’10) and Sebastián Colón (’13) recently opened their first prac-tice, Cordero Family Chiropractic, in Lan-tana, Fla. Originally from puerto rico, the two brothers are excited to embark on their new journey in the palm Beach community.

Reunion Scholarship Challenge this past October during Fall CE, LIFE celebrated and hosted class reunions for those classes ending in 3s and 8s. as a way to honor the five youngest class reunions, we have asked our alumni to make a gift in support of student scholarships.

as you know, Life University is the largest chiropractic college in the world, preparing students for rewarding and successful professional careers. as LIFE has become more influential, the University hopes to extend its reach and spread Chiropractic throughout the world. to do this, the University needs to expand its recruiting presence, increase scholarship support and improve language assistance for international students. support from alumni will help make this happen.

this challenge is to secure a specified amount per class reunion that will go toward student scholarships. If the class meets and/or exceeds the challenge, they can name the scholarship, for example, Class of 2003 scholarship. If the class does not meet the goal, then the funds go to a general scholarship fund or wherever we see fit.

It’s not every day that one has a

celebration honoring one’s 100th

birthday. But that’s exactly what

the Pine Island, Fla., community

did for Guy Glinski, who turned a

century old on Aug. 30, 2013.His first triple digit birthday

party included more than 50 of his closest friends, a fried fish dinner and entertainment by the salvation Harmonica Band—and Glinski himself.

His 100th birthday also marked more than 80 years of chiropractic care for Glinski, who until recently never had a medical doctor of his own. “I don’t believe in medical doctors, and I don’t believe in pills. people live on pills today. that’s not right,” remarked Glinski during a local news interview.

Born in Wisconsin on aug. 30, 1913, Glinski had noticed over time that one of his legs was significantly smaller due to an injury sustained on the farm. at 19, his dad took him to see two brothers who were local chiropractors. after an examination and X-rays, they discovered the problem lay in Glinski’s upper neck.

“Guy describes his first adjustment as if, ‘somebody pulled the curtains back,’” remembers mark Jeter, D.C., owner of Jeter Chiropractic Health Centers in Cape Coral, Fla., and Glinski’s chiropractor of more than 10 years. “He felt alive.” since then, Glinski has been faithful to Chiropractic. “Even today, he comes in two to three times a month, like clockwork,” notes Jeter.

growing demographic groups today. more than 50 percent of babies born since the year 2000 are expected to live to age 100. Eric plasker, D.C., author of the newly released “100 Year Lifestyle: second Edition,” defines a new health care and lifestyle model with chiropractic care at the core of changing people’s lives, the community and even the world. His book outlines a very simple plan to help people adjust their lives and make changes that will put them on a healthier course today and for the rest of their lives.

explains. “and, for most of them, sadly, they didn’t know how to take care of themselves to ensure living the quality of life 100 and beyond.”

a retired carpenter and widower of 13 years, Glinski plays harmonica in a church band every sunday, recently started a vegetarian diet and has never bought a can of soda. at 90, he was inspired to go skydiving for the first time and was featured on “Living It Up! the ali & Jack show,” where he candidly told everyone to “go get a chiropractor.”

“Guy is living the 100 Year Lifestyle. He has made his health a priority, rather than waiting for a crisis to force him to make better choices. He has an adventurous spirit, is having fun and at the age of 100, is still going strong. and, of course, he is keeping his spine and nervous system healthy with Chiropractic Lifestyle Care,” says plasker.

as the centenarian makes his way into the future, he plans to continue his regimen of visiting Jeter, playing his harmonica and driving his truck. and even at 100, Glinski is still full of surprises. His goal for the next year is to break the record for the oldest tandem skydive jump. the current record is 101 years and four months.
