The programme took place at the university’s Lentelus Football Cen- tre and the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport’s (SAS) indoor facilities. SU assisted the LFA with the execu- tion of the programme and also facili- tated a life skills programme and pro- vided expertise in the field of sport science and technology. According to Joseph Jacobs, LFA chairman, the programme aimed to implement the LFA’s vision to be the best governed and most respected lo- cal football association in southern Africa. “In so doing, it is essential that we identify, develop, nurture, equip and empower our local talent as early as possible. We know that such an ideal can only be accomplished through building mutually beneficial and sus- tainable partnerships with valuable community role players, such as SU. We are honoured and proud to have them as one of our key partners,” said Jacobs. Ashley Davids, LFA’s junior chair- man echoed Jacobs’ sentiments. “The selection of the u. 15 LFA board team should be seen as the first step towards identifying the top foot- ball talent in Stellenbosch. The idea is to expand the initiative to under 11, 13 and 17 teams in the near future.” SU football performance manager Warren Engelbrecht, says: “I am very excited by the prospect of the football talent that will be discovered and nur- tured at all age levels in future.” The selected team will participate in a number of inter-LFA friendly matches and will be prepared for a tournament which will take place in Stellenbosch later this year. Stellenbosch University’s partnership with the LFA and involvement in the holiday programme forms part of its broader football development programme, which was initially spearheaded by late rector of the university, Prof Russel Botman.
