Year 2 Remote Learning Pack Week Beg: 08.02.21
Literacy—Lesson 1 Explanations
Task 1: Read the information below.
How birds fly
Today we are going to focus on three things that tell us how birds fly.
1. Flapping
When a bird flaps it’s wings the bird pushes down against the air and so
pushes the birds upwards. The harder the wings flap the higher the bird
pushes upwards.
2. Gliding
When birds glide they move forward through the air with their wings tilted
at an angle. The air pushes against the wing and pushes the bird up.
That’s why sometimes birds fly without flapping their wings at all.
3. Steering
Birds change the angle and shape of their wings and their tails which
changes the way the air pushes against them. This way the birds can
move up or down or side to side.
Look out of your window. Can you spot any birds flying?
Literacy—Lesson 1 Explanations
You can use the information sheet to help you complete this task.
First write the title — remember what we are trying to explain today.

For each word draw a diagram or picture to explain what it means.
flap, glide, steer
Here is an example
Add arrows between your 3 pictures?
Can you think of an action for the different ways that birds fly?
1. 2. 3.
Literacy—Lesson 2 Explanations
Read the information sheet from lesson 1 before you start your work today.
Are these statements true or false?
Birds fly by flapping, gliding and wiggling.
Birds push against the wind with their wings.
Birds can fly without flapping their wings.
Birds cannot change the shape of their wings.
If you answered false to any of the questions can you explain why it is
false?
Look at this story map below which explains how birds fly. Use the story
map to explain what happens in each stage. Here is an example. Remember
to speak in sentences.
How birds fly
Birds start flying by flapping their wings. Their wings push down on the
air.

Additional task
We are going to complete a flowchart to explain each stage.

Literacy—Lesson 3 Explanations
What is cause and effect?
A cause and effect relationship is when something happens that makes
something else happen. Have a look at this table. Try to think about the
effect of each one. For example, rain — if it rains a lot it could cause a
flood.
Fill in the table thinking about cause and effect.
Reread the information sheet from lesson 1. This will help you today.
Look at this table showing cause and effect.
Write a sentence to explain the effect of birds flapping their wings.

Challenge—This table focuses on the bird steering. Complete the effect sec-
tion. Use the information sheet to help you if you need to.
Literacy—Lesson 5 Handwriting focus
This week we would like you to focus on starting your lower case letters at
the line. Use this sheet to help you. Try to control the size of your letters.
Choose a story you have read before and write out some of the pages from
the story in your neatest writing.
WALT: Persevere even when I find tasks difficult.
Have a go at one of the Lego challenges below then
complete the worksheet on the next page.
WALT: Persevere even when I find tasks difficult.
