“My life has been transformed, not just spiritually, but also with my social life. I feel like I’ve gotten closer to God through the ministry of the Wesley and got to know more

about Him. I have met so many amazing people and I know I can always count on them when I am in trouble. I

know they will always pray for me and be on thisjourney of faith together.”

Sue Kim, Pre-Med Biology Junior

“The Wesley has helped me take my religion from my youth to adulthood and established a strong base for my

future with Jesus. The Wesley has helped me see that Jesus is everywhere, even on a college campus, and I can

still connect with Him on my own in this new place.”Garrett Tarver, Meteorology Freshman

“By coming to the Wesley frequently, I have gotten to know more about myself (personality and character) and

my sense of purpose in life has become clearer.”Blessed Amoah, Petroleum Engineering

MSc Student and Research Assistant

“A memorable moment I have had at the Wesley is witnessing the baptism of a Chinese student in December

2021. The Wesley has blessed me and encouraged me to reach out and preach the gospel to others.”

Yongyao Chou, Chemistry student fromNanning, China

A Word from the Campus PastorGod is good! We are reminded of that daily at the Wesley through our wonderful students and the faithful prayers and support of our alumni and friends. While things are still far from “normal” on campus, every day is a step in the right direction.

This past year brought fewer Zoom meetings and more face-to-face opportunities to minister to and with students. There has been an increased focus on discipleship with Bible studies and other discipleship opportunities being offered daily and sometimes multiple times a day. Additionally, we have seen a partial return of international students to campus, which has been an incredible blessing.

As you read the stories and testimonies on the following pages, our hope is that you will be encouraged with how your prayers and financial support have been used for the Kingdom this past year and inspired to partner with us in even bigger ways in 2022.

God Bless,

Rev. Joshua CoatsExecutive Director and Campus Pastor

Deeply Loved by Godby Yue Zhang – Chemical Engineering grad student from Wuxi, Jiangsu, China

In the past four years, God has revealed Himself to me many times, but I wasn’t aware of that until I came to the Wesley. In 2019, I attended UC Davis as a chemical engineering exchange student and lived with a host family. They are Christian and always took me to church. I was deeply moved by the way the Christians organized their events with free food and new ways of worship. Everyone treated others as their brothers and sisters, even though they’ve never met one another before. So, when I came here and saw Christians invite us to their welcoming party, I felt curious and honored. The good memories of Christianity over the past two years made me want to have more communication with them.

I received an email about the welcoming party from Pastor Fuxia through the Chinese students’ mass mailing list. I decided to give it a try and come to the Wesley. After I walked inside the Wesley, I met Pastor Fuxia. She enthusiastically showed me around the facility and introduced me to the people here.

After that, I didn’t come to the Wesley for a month due to a busy schedule. However, everything changed after Pastor Fuxia contacted me and asked if I could have lunch with her. I was amazed she still remembered me after I didn’t show up at the Wesley for a month. Unfortunately, I overslept that day and missed the lunch appointment by one hour. Thankfully, Pastor Fuxia didn’t blame me and still took me to lunch. We talked so much that day and I believed that it was a God thing. Pastor Fuxia helped me understand all the things that happened over the last four years. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). All the uneasiness and confusion disappeared after my lunch appointment with Pastor Fuxia. I was so grateful and felt that I was deeply loved by God.

I received baptism during the Christmas service at the Wesley this last December. When Pastor Fuxia and Pastor Josh laid their hands on me and prayed for me, I could feel the light of the Lord come upon me though I closed my eyes. In the following days, I had an extraordinary experience in my prayers, with the guidance of the word of the Lord and prayers of the pastors deeply engraved in my mind, I became energized and reinvigorated and motivated. Whenever I encounter problems and difficulties in my study and life, I always feel that the Lord is with me telling me : “Yue, you are the one I love and you have the ability to overcome all hardships.”

In the days following my baptism, I gradually felt the presence of the Holy Spirit and settled down to read the Bible at rest. I wrote down the Scriptures I learned through Thursday Bible study at the Wesley and I would review them again when I was reading the Bible by myself. After my conversion, any Bible study has been a precious opportunity for me. Every time I came to understand some knowledge of the Bible, I felt inspired with a free spirit full of life in a spring breeze.

When I can memorize the Scriptures, I meditate upon them and recite them repeatedly while doing things, which eliminates the distracting thoughts in my heart. This helps me feel the Lord is always with me watching me, which fills me with confidence. The more I think about it, the more I realize the grace of the Lord in my life. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). The Lord miraculously made my work go smoothly in the places where it didn’t go well before.

“I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalms 18:1). The Lord gave me the opportunity to be born again. The Wesley led me to know the Lord and changed my life. Pastor Fuxia offered me all the help on the way to know the Lord and helped me get rid of all doubts about the Lord and the church. I thank God for the Wesley and the help I got and grace I experienced in Christ. With God’s help, I will serve the Lord wholeheartedly. I will do my best to pay forward by spreading the glory of the Lord with people in my life so that more people will know Christ and will be saved. Thank you for supporting the Wesley International Ministry so that I can continue to grow in my relationship with Christ.

Leadership Spotlight Paige Lehrmann, PhD student in the Mathematics Department

How did you first get involved with the Wesley?During my first week at OU, I saw a chalk advertisement for an outdoor worship at the Wesley. The service was great, and the students and staff were all so nice. Soon after, I began attending weekly small groups and worship night.

What do you do when you are not at the Wesley? When I am not at the Wesley, I am usually busy studying math. But when I do have some free time, my friends and I enjoy game/movie nights, late night trips to Braum’s, or hiking trips. On some weekends, I travel down to Texas to play in Quidditch tournaments with my team, Quidditch Club Dallas.

What might someone be surprised to know about you? I grew up competing in dog sports with my mom! While we primarily play flyball (a fast-paced dog relay race), I have also competed in events such as agility, sheep herding, and confirmation. Events and competitions took me and my family all over the states and Canada. Raising, training, and competing with my dogs has been a blessing and a delight for as long as I can remember.

Which area of leadership do you serve at the Wesley?I serve on the Invest team! This year, I co-lead the Freshmen Family group on Tuesday nights. We meet every week to discuss the sermon, check in on one another and enjoy community.

What do you wish other people knew about the Wesley? The Wesley is a wonderful place to engage in Christian fellowship with others. The Wesley provides a place for young believers to gather in community to deepen their relationship with God and one another. The Wesley also cultivates fellowship with many international students attending OU. Through the Wesley, students from all over the world are able to gather together and delight in the unity we have in Christ.

“The Wesley has invested in me spiritually, helping me believe in the existence of God. Every Thursday we can go to the Bible study and fellowship, listen to the pastor teaching the Bible for us and enjoy the free dinner.”Boshen Xu, Chemical Engineering student from Liaoning, China

“I cherish the togetherness that exists at the Wesley, where people from all race and ethnicity gather to spend time in worship to God. I have found a home away from home and very importantly I value more the power of the Holy Communion which we share at every meeting.”Segun Bodunde, PhD student in Geophysics from Nigeria

Tell us about some of the people you have met since you began serving at the Wesley. This year, I am especially excited for the Freshmen Family group. Every student is remarkably insightful when it comes to their faith, and they are witty conversationalists! I have also developed a closer relationship with Bonny Coats. Bonny is a wonderful person who cares deeply about others and loves like Christ. She has been a great friend, mentor and inspiration to me during my time at the Wesley.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about coming to or donating to the Wesley? The Wesley strives to foster a well-rounded Christian community. Students are invited to participate in game nights and other themed events to escape the stress of school and enjoy each other’s company. Small groups, worship nights, and service projects allow students to deepen their relationship with the Lord and serve others. Many of the friendships formed here transcend the walls of the building and even become lifelong relationships. This community provides a home away from home for many students at OU, and it is certainly a place worth joining and investing in.

Intern Spotlight Austin Ogden, Accounting Senior and Worship Intern from Tulsa

What is your favorite thing about the Wesley? My favorite thing about the Wesley is all the Bible studies we get to do. Mainly, the daily Revelation Bible study. I love getting up in the morning every day and reading Revelation with Josh and other students and then taking time to discuss as much as we can the few verses we read.

Why are you part of the community at the Wesley?I originally came to the Wesley because my sister, Haydn, was the worship leader. She wanted me to join the band as the acoustic guitarist. After a year of convincing me while I was in high school, I finally agreed to do it. It was the best choice I’ve ever made. It has led me to be a part of an amazing group of people who are my best friends at OU, and I am now a worship leader. I never thought I would be a worship leader, but because of the Wesley, I felt called to do so. I don’t think my faith would be even close to what it is without the community I have at the Wesley.

How has the Wesley helped connect you with Jesus and with other followers of Jesus? The Bible studies that we do at the Wesley gives me the opportunity to study God’s word every single day and sometimes multiple times a day. I am not only studying God’s word, but I am also doing it with different people who have the desire to grow closer with God just like I do.

In what ways has the Wesley invested in you and helped strengthen your faith? The Wesley has allowed me to be on leadership and given me the opportunity to be the worship leader. I may not be a great worship leader or best leader altogether, but the Wesley still gives me the ability to try, fail and get back up. This leads to me learning more about perseverance and I am a better Christian because of it. It is great to be humbled constantly while also knowing that God is with me always, guiding me every step of the way. The Wesley as a whole has always been so supportive of me and always lifts me up even when I don’t deserve it. It reminds me of how God deals with us. Even though we don’t deserve it, God always lifts us up and guides us to the next step.

Intern Spotlight Brooks Lambert, Psychology Junior and Discipleship Internfrom Oklahoma City

Why are you part of the community at the Wesley?I enjoy being able to come to a place where I can be challenged in my faith and grow with other college students. I will always remember the time spent with people from the Wesley over coffee or lunch.

How has the Wesley helped connect you with Jesus and with other followers of Jesus? It’s been nice that I am able to learn other peoples’ testimonies and see how their knowledge of Christ is evident in my life as well. I love all the different groups of people I am able to connect with.

In what ways do you think your life has been transformed because of the ministry of the Wesley? The community at the Wesley is absolutely amazing. I love how different groups of people have helped me become a more understanding and open minded person. We have tackled some difficult questions in our faith over the last couple of years, which I feel has helped me. Additionally, I have met some people that I imagine will play a significant role in the future of my life.

God’s Awesomeness on Display: an Update on Gloria’s Journey to Receiving Her Green Cardby Gloria Ajinomisanghan, Associate Director of International Ministry

My Journey with USCIS began in 2014. I became an intern at the Wesley that year using my OPT Work authorization, which is valid for only one year. Months before it expired in 2015, the Wesley began the process of applying for a Religious workers visa for me with an immigration attorney in Norman so I could continue serving at The Wesley. We waited for nine months for a response during which I could only volunteer because of my pending visa application status. The USCIS responded with a denial and a 30-day notice to depart the U.S.

Thankfully, the Wesley did not give up on the R1 application process. Rev. Daniel Dennison alongside a Wesley board member met with our attorney and decided that my case should be investigated. I had to leave the U.S. and return to Nigeria while the process was going on. I remember wanting to turn in the Wesley key and being told that I was coming back by Daniel. At that point, I think everyone else at The Wesley had more faith than I did, but I kept the Wesley key with a mustard seed faith and traveled back to Nigeria with it. A few months later I was informed that my case was reopened. There was an on-site inspection by USCIS and an approval leading me to return to work at the Wesley on a 2-year R1 visa in September 2016.

In 2018, we began the process of renewal for my R1 visa which can only be renewed once. After months of waiting, we got approved for a renewal in 2019 which was set to expire in February 2021. For the third time, in 2020, the Wesley began the process of applying for adjustment of my status to permanent residence so I can keep working at the Wesley. The Wesley petition on my behalf was turned in on April 2020 and yet another waiting process and documents submission began.

We received several approval notices in the green card process, which ended with the good news phone call from our attorney on Friday, January 21. I picked up the welcome letter from the USCIS and my green card (which gives me 10 years permanent lawful residence in the United States) from the law office on Tuesday January 25! PRAISE THE LORD! It has been such a long journey!

Throughout this journey, the Wesley has supported me financially by paying for all the lawyers bills & USCIS fees amounting to over $20,000. I also received support in getting all the documents turned in, from employment support letters from our current Wesley Director Josh Coats and also from the previous director (Daniel) mentioned earlier who began the process with me. Spiritually I received support from the Wesley with lots of prayers through these processes!

The Wesley board both past and present has supported me fully through this process as well. I received the support of the Bishop of the Oklahoma conference past & present (Bishop Hayes and Bishop Jimmy Nunn), McFarlin’s previous pastor, Linda Harker, former Wesley director Brad Humphrey (before Daniel), Asbury Tulsa UMC (Pastor Tom Harrison), all the Wesley staff, all the Wesley students, my family, friends and loved ones.

Time and space will fail me to mention everyone who has walked with me and prayed with me in loving support through this lengthy process! I remember my mentor sending me a song ‘He never failed me yet’ when I was wrestling with the process on our second application and I have held onto that throughout all the processes since then.

God has never failed us and He never will. God is truly awesome and my biggest thanks and gratitude goes to almighty God for calling me and choosing me by His grace to serve in ministry here and for divinely sustaining me through this process with His divine favor and divine success through the help of the Wesley! As I share my testimony of receiving my green card after an almost 10 year journey with USCIS, I see clearly the display of God’s awesomeness and faithfulness throughout this challenging long journey! I am thankful beyond words for the Wesley transforming my life and the lives of students at OU & beyond! ‘’The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with Joy!’ Psalm 126:3. Praise Master Jesus and thank you all so much for continuous generosity and support of the Wesley!

Board of Directors SpotlightMariann Lawson, OU Wesley Board Chair

Mariann is a fifth-generation native of Norman and finds joy in spending time with her people: her husband John of nearly 40 years; her sons Chase and his wife Erin, Cody and his wife Audrey, and puppy-brother, Brodie, her Sheltie; as well as her extended family and her friend family. She enjoys the outdoors, embroidery and handwork, photography and praising God for the life he has given her.

Mariann is also a fourth-generation McFarlin Memorial UMC member. (Her grandparents were in McFarlin’s first young married class.) “Growing up as a McFarlin youth, the example set for us was to love like Jesus,” Mariann said. “To give your talents and use your gifts to lift others up. Jane Vicksburg, John Yarrington, Phil Fenn, Kathy Mash and others guided and mentored me and were a part of my village.”

As a youth, Mariann was active in MYF, Wesley and Chapel Choirs. As an adult, she has been active in the youth department, co-chaired the Fall Academy, co-chaired the Advent Festival, been a member of the board of trustees, administrator of the Sunday daycare program, taught Sunday School at all levels, as well as volunteering in other capacities.

A graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a B.A. in Journalism, Mariann feels very strongly that part of everyone’s purpose in this life is to leave this world better because you were here. She finds fulfillment in serving others and volunteering for organizations she is called to help. Mariann currently serves as president of the Norman Public School Foundation Board of Directors and as Board Chairman for the OU Wesley Foundation.

During her career, she has been the executive and regional director for the Heart of Oklahoma Chapter of the American Red Cross; an Executive Vice President and Marketing and Community Development Director for Republic Bank & Trust; and is currently the Vice President and Director

of Spend Life Wisely Integration for First United Bank. “I know it’s a very different title to have,” Mariann said. “But in essence, my job at First United is to spread love and impact. We do that through focusing on Personal Growth, Financial Well-being, Health and Wellness and our Faith. These four pillars allow us support our bankers, customers and those in the community in living their best life and spending life wisely.”

You have faithfully served on the Wesley board for five years. What is your connection to the Wesley and how did you end up on the board?Living in Norman and as a McFarlin member, I have always been aware of the OU Wesley. Still, my reason for serving on the board of directors is somewhat random. Daniel Dennison simply asked me to join the board. That’s it. I’ve always appreciated the ministry the Wesley provides. With my sons both grown, it seemed like the right time to serve older students than those I had always gravitated to. With your history and standing in the Norman community, you could donate your time and money anywhere. Why the Wesley? College is a crucial time of life for the typical OU student. You’re out on your own for the first time. You begin putting all the messaging and learning you’ve received during your upbringing to the test. Young people need a place that feels like home and reminds them that no matter the circumstance, our Lord loves them and walks with them. That nothing can separate them from the love of Jesus. The Wesley lives out His love every single day.

How has the Wesley impacted you and your faith in your time serving on the board? There was a time I wasn’t sure I was supposed to be on the board. I wasn’t sure where my place was or how I could offer my gifts. But Jesus knew better. He knew and He showed me His purpose for me. The Wesley has been a gift to me. One that regularly reminds me that my God is an awesome, loving God. I have become closer to Him and have been blessed to be a part of sharing Him through the ministry of The OU Wesley.

“My favorite thing about the Wesley is how welcoming and homey it is! During my free time in-between classes, it’s always nice to walk in, see Josh, and have him ask me how I’m doing in this weather. Who can also forget Gloria’s hugs that remind you of the communal love of God and Fuxia’s tasty dumplings during International Fellowship.”

Araba Twumasi Mensah, Biology Pre-MedJunior from Accra-Ghana

“ “My favorite thing about the Wesley is the comfort I feel when walking in the doors. I have never walked in without someone smiling, greeting me, and asking how I’m doing. I love the hearts of the people at this place because they truly shine with the love of Jesus.”

Katherine Schoeffler, English Junior
