My Workplace Experience

What is Workplace Experience?

Workplace experience is an opportunity for you to enter the workplace and experience what it is like first hand. Workplace experience will provide you with valuable insights into your chosen industry and enable you to more effectively plan for your future through reflecting upon this experience. It will also give you an opportunity to relate what you have been doing at school to the workplace and increase your motivation to work hard to achieve your goals. You may also utilise this opportunity to explore your career options and interests. As part of the PLP task 3 you will be required to reflect on the development of one (or more) capabilities.

My Workplace Experience

Dear Parent/Caregiver

The Work Experience programme is the option available to year 10 students not attending the snow tour during Week 3 of Term 3 (Monday to Friday 6th - 10th August 2018). Students selecting this programme will participate in a 35-hour work experience placement in a business, industry or voluntary work of their choice. Please note work experience is unpaid.

There will be an opportunity for students to evaluate and reflect on their personal development in a work context and its subsequent impact on their Personal Learning Plan. Task 3: My Workplace Experience.

Students are required to find their own placement. The school is able to assist but does not have placements which are allocated to students. It is not recommended that students complete the work experience placement with parents or family, but parent assistance in finding a suitable placement for their child is requested.

The Department Education and Child Development (DECD) Workplace Guidelines (2015), identifies prohibited activities that students can perform while on work placement, please see the attached guidelines. In agreeing to be part of the programme students will be required to:

Attend a 5 hour induction programme at school. This includes satisfactorily completion of mandatory training and assessment in Work Health and Safety, Equal Opportunity legislation and Child Protection Act DECS Workplace Guidelines, (2015).

Complete and return a Workplace Agreement Form by 22nd June 2018. The form is a legally binding agreement between the employer, student, parents and DECD, it is essential that all information is read and understood with signatures entered.

Complete and return the Workplace Learning – Student Risk Assessment Form Complete a work experience journal, which reflects on their experience and

demonstrates an understanding of work. (PLP Task 3: My Workplace Experience) Contact the supervisor just prior to work experience, undertake a site specific induction

and be aware of employer expectation and requirements.

Students planning to complete work experience in a Child Care or Preschool Centre require DCSI child-related employment screening. Applications for the screening must be completed by the end of Term 1 as the DCSI screening request can take from 8 – 16 weeks to be processed. Please note Primary School Work Placements will not require a Criminal History Screening. There is no cost to parents and a current application form can be collected from Mrs Hudson.

Please refer to the attached information guide to workplace learning. For further enquiries contact Laura Hudson during school hours on 8304 8420 or at [email protected]

Finding My Work Experience

Work experience is not choosing a career but a career interest area and having the opportunity to explore it further by experiencing the work environment. Work experience is highly competitive in many areas – you are competing with other school students as well as tertiary and TAFE students. Finding work experience in many ways is like finding a job and may take time and persistence.

If you haven’t been successful or started to look yet it may help to try some of the following:

Read about various types of work online at www.myfuture.edu.au Research placements students have undertaken in previous years by searching through the

database on comdata or see Mrs Hudson. Google the Yellow Pages to find places of interest either close to home or accessible by public

transport away and make a list of possibilities to contact by telephone. Talk to parents, friends, relatives, neighbours, teachers who may be able to assist with contacts You should not gain work experience under direct supervision of your parents.

Contacting employers

You may have to make many telephone calls and write many letters before you find an employer who is willing to take you for work experience. It is difficult but try not to take NO personally.

Think about how you are going to get to and from a work place before you contact them. Ensure you have a plan for getting to work each day as it will be your responsibility to get there and home each day as well as being punctual.

Telephone tips Telephone calls will generally give a quicker response than sending letters.

o Call the potential employer and ask to speak to the work experience coordinator or human resources manager or the person in charge of staffing. Write down the name of the person and use it when speaking to the company.

o When speaking on the telephone be polite and make sure you create a good impression. Ensure that you sound enthusiastic, interested and are organised. Identify yourself and explain the reason for your call.

o My name is -----------and I am a year 10 student at -----------. I am enquiring about a work experience placement with your business. Do you take work experience students?

o If they say maybe or call again later make a note of this and follow up in a couple of weeks.

o If they say send me more details follow up with a letter and if there is no reply after a week or two call again.

o When a business agrees to take you on make a time to go in and meet them to complete the 2018 Work Experience Agreement form. This form must be completed and returned to school before the placement begins.

Honesty Your honesty is important when dealing with others:

Make sure you take responsibility for any mistakes you make, it is better to own up than to be found out.

Do not leave valuables lying around, as they are a temptation to others to steal. Where there are secure places available such as lockers make sure you use them.

PLP | My Workplace Experience 2016

13

If you are put in a position where you are handling money it is important to be completely honest.

Work Health and Safety Act 2012 Work Health and Safety in the workplace is governed by the Work Health and Safety Act (2012). The legislative obligation is to ensure all ‘workers’ engage in work where their safety is paramount. Students on work experience have the status of ‘worker’, and specifically that of a ‘new worker’.

Work experience students have the right to a safe and healthy workplace. Under the Work Health & Safety Act 2012 employers must make sure the workplace is as safe as possible. This includes giving you an induction to the worksite, instructing you in the safe use of machinery and equipment, training you as a worker on safe work practices and providing you with personal protective equipment.

As part of the Work Health & Safety Act 2012 you as a worker are responsible for safety too. You must also take care of your own and other’s safety by following health and safety instructions, using protective equipment as required, reporting workplace hazards and cooperating with the Workplace provide on health and safety issues.

Employer & Employee Responsibilities The legislation places responsibilities on both the employer and employee. Following is a list of the things you and your employer must do.

Safety in the workplace is everyone’s responsibility

Employer Responsibilities (Things Your Employer MUST Provide & Monitor)

Worker /Student Responsibilities (Things You MUST Do)

Safe workplace Safety induction Safe systems and machinery Adequate facilities Information, instruction and training Monitor changes Monitor employee health & welfare Keep records of injuries Adequate supervision

Protect yourself NOT endanger others Follow reasonable instructions Use safety equipment Wear personal protective equipment Report all accidents NOT be under the influence of

alcohol or drugs

If you feel uncomfortable about the work placement If you feel able, you should talk about your concern with your supervisor at your workplace. If the problem still continues or you do not feel comfortable talking with your workplace supervisor you should make contact with Mrs Hudson.

The emphasis during work experience is always on trying to provide a safe, interesting and valuable learning experience. This requires you taking responsibility for a number of arrangements including the following:

Page 15: Year 9 Year 10 Year 8 Curriculum Year 9 Curriculum M E S ......Specialist Mathematics Music Studies Music Explorations Music Performance – Solo (10) ... Total 9 11 11 12 Digital

arrange the completion of the Workplace Learning Agreement Form and promptly return it

worksite-specific induction before commencing your placement behave as an employee while on placement, conforming to all the workplace rules and

instructions from your workplace supervisor, including being punctual and notifying both the workplace and the school of absences

which must be kept private wear the appropriate footwear / protective clothing / uniform as expected by your

workplace provider If there is an accident please report the incident to the school immediately so an accident

form can be completed. Accident / Injury Reporting

You are covered by insurance if you are hurt at work as long as you are doing an approved workplace learning program. That means that your Workplace Learning Agreement Form has been signed by all parties before you have started in the workplace. You may not be covered if the injury or damage was the result of your negligence or failure to follow clear and reasonable instructions.

You must consider incidents (near miss accidents) as warnings that lead to an accident, resulting in an injury to a worker. If you report all near misses and they are investigated there is a very good chance that an injury will be prevented.

Accidents result from two main causes; unsafe acts and unsafe conditions. In many cases the person who is injured is not the person who caused the situation.

As a result of the report, the incident can be investigated and actions taken to prevent the re-occurrence of the incident. The reports will also pinpoint possible problem areas in the workplace and provide injury statistics.

All injuries that occur in the workplace must be reported to your employer or someone in the organisation who has responsibility for Work Health and Safety and to the Work Experience Coordinator at Marryatville High School, Mrs Hudson.

All injuries must be reported as soon as possible after the injury happens, but at least within 24 hours.

Equal Opportunity, Harassment & Discrimination Act

The Workplace Learning Guidelines (2016) are underpinned and respond to the Equal Opportunity Act (1984). Discrimination is about making choices. It is a legitimate process and we do it every day. For example, if an employer advertises a job, they are probably going to get lots of applicants for the one job. The employer has to distinguish between the applicants and choose one person. In other words, they must discriminate between the people going for the job to hopefully find the best person for the job. Equal Opportunity in employment is about using the law to make sure that these choices are made in a fair and appropriate way which looks at the abilities of the person and not irrelevant personal characteristics. Everyone is entitled to equal access to work and to be treated fairly at work, regardless of personal characteristics such as race, disability, age, gender, sexuality, caring responsibilities and religious dress. This includes equal conditions at work and being treated fairly by the workplace provider and co-workers. Equal opportunity laws are also about protecting rights to participate in the public life of the community without being unfairly discriminated against. Equal opportunity law and discrimination law applies to all workers – not only to paid jobs but also to volunteering, work placements and, apprenticeships or traineeships. All students in preparing for the workplace, whether it is paid employment or a work experience, should know about and understand the principles of discrimination law in relation to work conditions including matters that relate to their health safety and wellbeing. When students undertake a work experience they are classified as a worker and have legislative entitlement to the same protection against discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying as the paid staff.

The South Australian Equal Opportunity Act 1984 seeks to:

Promote equality of opportunity between the citizens of this state. Prevent certain kinds of discrimination. Encourage unprejudiced attitudes. Allow people to participate in the economic and social life of the community.

The Act 1984 makes it unlawful for anyone to be treated unfairly on the basis of

Age Sexuality Pregnancy Sex Physical or intellectual impairment Marital status Race

In the areas of:

Employment Clubs and associations Education Conferral of qualifications Disposal of goods & services Disposal of land Accommodation

The Act also makes unlawful:

Sexual harassment Victimisation

Sexual harassment is:

Any unwanted or uninvited sexual behaviour, which is offensive, embarrassing, intimidating or humiliating. It has nothing to do with mutual attraction or friendship.

Victimisation is:

Treating someone unfairly because they have acted upon their legal rights, under Equal Opportunity laws. For example, if your job is threatened because you have made a complaint to the Commission.

What is discrimination?

Discrimination is treating someone unfairly because they belong to a particular group of people

Federal Racial Discrimination Act, 1975

It is unlawful for a person to do any act involving a distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing of any human right or fundamental freedom in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field or public life.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 is an Act relating to discrimination on the ground of disability. The objects of the Act are:

To eliminate as far as possible discrimination against persons on the ground of disability in the areas of:

Work, accommodation, education, access to premises, clubs and sport The provision of goods, facilities, services and land Existing laws The administration of Commonwealth laws and programs

To ensure that as far as practicable that persons with disabilities have the same rights to equality before the law as the rest of the community. To promote recognition and acceptance in the community of the principle that persons with disabilities have the same fundamental rights as the rest of the community.

Children’s Protection Act 1993 Child Safe Environments You have the right to feel safe and free from harm at all times during workplace learning. Additionally, you must not be treated in a manner that may be psychologically harmful or that would constitute physical assault. This would include pushing, grabbing or hitting you as well as berating, humiliating or belittling.

Workplace providers are required to ensure all of their staff are aware of the special responsibilities associated with working with school students. Child protection legislation also applies to you while you are doing workplace learning.

Examples of unacceptable conduct by a workplace provider or their employees include: deliberate exposure of students to the discriminatory or sexual behaviour of others inappropriate conversations and obscene language suggestive remarks and actions, including showing of publications, electronic media or

illustrations which are inappropriately suggestive jokes and gestures of a discriminatory or sexual nature inappropriate personal correspondence with a student Unwarranted and/or inappropriate touching of a student.

Students undertaking placements that provide child care or baby-sitting services, residential or overnight care of children, or perform work in the area of juvenile justice, child protection or children’s disability services, will need to have a DECD Criminal History Assessment. This will be done at school prior to any placement.

Problem Solving Strategy for dealing with an incident of neglect or abuse

Think trust thoughts and your reading of the situation Feel rely on your feelings and pay attention to the body’s physical indicators

(warning signs) Act put into action your plan to become safe

Persist evaluate the action and if unsuccessful, try other options until successful

The lift got stuck for 15 minutes and one of the cleaners panicked speaking in a different language that he couldn’t understand. Josh felt very anxious. The second day he was in the kitchen and again, only having a 20 minute break all day and spent the entire day chopping vegetables. No one bothered to speak with him. He accidently cut himself with the knife.

His supervisor vaguely mentioned that whenever the machine started rolling Jason needed to ‘adjust it back and feel the rollers’. As he attempted to operate the machine and ‘feel the rollers’ his hand became trapped, crushing his fingers and thumb and damaging his wrist. He required micro-surgery to extract a portion of hip to replace the damaged bone in his finger.

7, Lily, 15, organised a work placement in her local newsagency. On her first day she was asked to restock the shelves with some brochures from the storeroom. The brochures were in a carton on the top shelf of the storeroom but she couldn’t find a ladder so she used the lower shelves to climb up. The shelves were freestanding and as Lily climbed it caused the shelving to fall on top of her.
