Industrialisation changed the way society was made up forever. Communities were no longer simply split into the nobility (landowners) and commoners.With industrialisation came the growth of the working classes and the middle classes or ‘bourgeoisie’, eg. Factory owners, mine owners, lawyers and merchants. Workers had to adapt from the slower pace of life on the land to strict discipline and rules enforced by the foreman in factories. In this new world, time was money, and if workers were late they would be locked out or fined.
Workers were not allowed to wear watches and many reported the clocks in the factories were put forward in the morning and backwards at night. They were not allowed to wander, chat or sing during working hours and breaks were limited. Working and living conditions were hard during the Industrial Revolution, but it didn’t stop people migrating from rural areas to urban areas in search of work. During this time the population increased dramatically.

The spinning jenny is a multi-spool spinning wheel. It was invented around 1764 by James Hargreaves in Stanhill, near Blackburn, Lancashire in the northwest of England The device dramatically reduced the amount of work needed to produce yarn, with a single worker able to work eight or more spools at once.
