A CHANCE TO RENEW WITH LOVE AND COMPASSION

As our Catholic community prepares for Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, we mark the formal beginning of Holy Week. The Christian celebration of Easter like most religious holidays has been taken over by consumerism and in doing so the ‘Easter’ long weekend becomes an over indulgence of hot cross buns and chocolate. Sugar aside, there is an obvious challenge that Jesus intended to give us and that was to reflect on our own love and compassion. Most would say that this is not a challenge, it is easy to love, however, when you truly reflect on your life - Are you truly loving? Are you truly filled with love? Are you filled with compassion?

In the days following the Last Supper, the arrest of Jesus at the hands of the authorities, the beating and finally death by crucifixion, we often forget his disciples. We know Judas betrayed him with a kiss and Peter denied him three times as predicted. However, do we ever ponder

how Jesus’ followers were feeling? Their teacher and leader was gone and now what is to become of them? If we read deeper into history, we learn these ordinary men and women were filled with great fear, regret and guilt, in particular around Judas and Peter’s actions. Peter and Judas have the same fate, both betrayed their teacher, both recognised their own guilt and felt remorse and both received Jesus’ love even after the betrayal. A look, a kiss - where is the difference? Why do we have such dramatically different endings given the seemingly equal fate of both disciples? The difference lies in this; Peter trusted in God’s mercy - Judas did not and at the centre of this Jesus understood their weakness and ultimately all our weaknesses, yet showed never ending love and compassion for all people. In an article recently shared with me and written by Hugh Mackay, he challenges our love and compassion stating: “Romantic love sweeps us away. The love of family and friends wraps us in reassurance about who we are and where we belong. But compassion is human love at its noblest, because it’s the form of love that gives without any expectation of receiving; a gift

with no strings attached. It’s a sign that we acknowledge our common humanity.”

Jesus often taught of love and mostly we think of love as being about our feelings of affection for someone or something. But there’s an equally potent form of love that has nothing to do with our emotional state at all. It’s the kind of love that makes sense of the idea that you could love someone you don’t actually like very much, or someone you disagree with. It can even make sense of the idea that you could love your enemies, just as Jesus taught. It’s about how we choose to act towards other people, regardless of how we feel about them.

Perhaps a better word may be ‘compassion’ - that wonderful human capacity to act with respect, kindness and charity, not selectively, but as a general rule - a mental discipline; a way of life and ultimately not expecting it in return. It’s a commitment to the idea that I will approach every encounter with another person respectfully and with a disposition to show kindness towards them. We can show someone how much we love without saying it as a throw line but actually being compassionate towards them. Jesus did not use words to teach compassion, he showed compassion. Compassion has the ability to change everything. It encourages us to build a better community by responding to bad behaviour with good behaviour, and by setting an example of kindness and respect, especially when it would be easier to give in to negative impulses like revenge, lust and hate. The impact of compassion, another kind of love, goes on and on.

So perhaps we can rethink how we can show compassion more in our lives. Jesus taught love by showing compassion. Project Compassion is not Caritas asking for money, Project Compassion is Caritas asking for donations to help build positive futures for communities less fortunate than ourselves and not expecting anything in return. Project Compassion is the act of showing love without expecting love in return. This week of preparation I will take on the challenge and I implore all of the Gleeson College community; students, staff, parents and families to also, let us all think and act with COMPASSION. Remember compassion is the human capacity to love without expecting anything in return.

YEAR 10 CHILD STUDIES > Baby Simulators a Challenging Learning Experience!

In Term 1, our Year 10 Child Studies Class has been caring for baby simulators,

offering a hands-on experience and great insight in to what it would be like to be

a young parent.

Students have faced the many challenges of parenthood whilst caring for their

babies for the three-night assignment. The babies have needed to be fed,

burped, changed and rocked at all hours of the day and night (as in real life!). The students have been a great support to each other, helping each other as much as possible. Although at times they have felt exhausted, they have all enjoyed this

rewarding learning experience.

constructing their own hooded jumpers. Students carefully cut out their patterns, pinned the pieces together before sewing

and overlocking them. The final products are fantastic,

with all students creating high quality work – well done!
