Excellence as standard

Schools are a people business. The inner belief and commitment to realising excellence by those who lead schools is the starting point. At its beating heart the excellent school is a place where people care more then others think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, and expect more than others think is possible.

Preparing our students for the new KS4 Curriculum

Reforming Key stage 4 (GCSE) Qualifications

• New English and mathematics GCSEs will be ready for teaching from September 2015, other GCSEs, will be introduced for first teaching from 2016.

• GCSE mathematics will provide greater coverage and be more challenging for those aiming to achieve top grades.

• GCSE English Language will require higher level reading skills and good, accurate written English, which will better prepare students for further study and work.

• GCSE English Literature will encourage students to read, write and think critically; it will assess students on challenging and substantial whole texts and on shorter unseen texts.

• Most GCSE examinations will be un-tiered, only GCSE Mathematics examinations will continue to be tiered.

• GCSE examinations to recognise and reward accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

CodesThe report shows students’ attitude to learning in lessons. In order to be more specific, ‘attitude to learning’ is split into three key focus areas: Effort, Behaviour and Homework.

O – Outstanding, the highest standards always met.

G – Good, standards good much of the time, but occasional inconsistencies leave room for improvement.

I – Inconsistent, Standards are variable, unsatisfactory as often as satisfactory. This adversely affects progress.

U - Unsatisfactory – standards are very inconsistent and often unacceptable. This is having a major impact on progress.

Homework at Sandhurst School

AD

• Homework at Sandhurst School has been designed to help support and consolidate what the students learn in class

• Half of the departments will set homework on a weekly basis, this will be recorded in the students work journals

• The departments that will set homework in this traditional way include: MFL, technology, computing, art, and mathematics

• These tasks will take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete

• The rest of the departments set homework as part of a rota

• These subjects will set longer tasks over a two week period and take turns throughout the year

• These tasks have been uploaded onto the SDC and can be accessed via the website

• The departments that are involved with the homework rota include: English, history, geography, science, music, drama, religious education and PE

The PiXL Edge

AD

The PiXL Edge has been designed for schools as a means of accrediting and developing those key personal attributes, that are desired by both employers and higher education establishments.

The five attributes are:

1. Leadership 2. Organisation 3. Initiative 4. Resilience 5. Communication

Page 28: Year 7 Evening. FOSS (Friends of Sandhurst School) Governing Body Senior Leadership Team – Debbie Smith - Headteacher – Sam Hunt - Deputy Headteacher.

The PiXL Edge

AD

The students have been enrolled onto the programme at the apprentice level, once this has been completed the students will automatically move onto the graduate programme.

Students will qualify at three levels:

Level 1: PiXL Apprentice (Year 7)Level 2: PiXL Graduate (Year 10)Level 3: PiXL Master (Year 12)

The students will be instructed on how to log their achievements online. Parents will also be able to access the PiXL Edge system and view what progress has been made.

Mr Matthew Bell: PiXL Co-ordinator

The PiXL Edge

AD

Why are we doing this?

• We want to reward the students for demonstrating the key attributes that are not always apparent in their traditional lessons.

• We want the students to develop those key ‘life’ skills that future employers and universities will look for.

• We want to find ways for the students to enrich their studies outside of the classroom, to fulfil their potential and be successful.
