Aims of the session
What are SATs?
SATs stands for Standard Assessment Tests
They can also be referred to as ‘end of key stage’ tests
The papers are externally marked and the results are usually available just before the end of the summer term
The results are given in the form of a level.

Year 6

Level 5 Beyond expectations
Level 4 At level expected

How are the SATs organised?English
Monday 11th May 2015
Reading Comprehension TaskA three- part reading task with comprehension questions.Completed in 1 hour.
The Reading Test
Level 3-5 Children are given a reading booklet with three
to four texts. For the first time there will be no
theme. The least demanding text will come first
with the following texts increasing in difficulty.
The children will have an hour to read the texts
answer approximately 35 questions totalling 50
marks.
The Reading Test
Level 3-5
Children can refer back to the texts in the
reading booklet throughout the tests.
Questions are: shorter closed response items and
longer, more open response types.
Questions are worth 1,2 or 3 marks.

Completed in 45 minutes
English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test
The test will assess children’s ability in grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary.
Paper 1 has short answer questions (40-50 questions) assessing grammar, punctuation and vocabulary (50marks) . Paper 2 assesses spellings (20 marks).
Writing:
There are no writing tests.
Writing assessment consists of a series of longer pieces of writing levelled by teachers.
This is moderated externally.

How are we preparing in school?
• English and Maths revision sessions
• English and Maths Interventions
• 1 to 1 tuition
• Support from Westcliff High School for Girls
• Revision homework
What can I do to help?• The best help is interest taken in learning and progress.
• Continue listening to your child read, asking questions about what they have read.
• Keep practising times tables and spellings regularly with your child
• Support your child with any homework
• Ensure your child gets plenty of sleep and is not anxious.
•Good communication between the school and home.
• Make a note of the SATs week – 11th May 2015
