How do we teach maths?

There is a mental arithmetic test.

This maths morning is all about calculations!

We are focussing on addition and subtraction.

Next half term we will be holding another maths morning- covering multiplication and division.

Strategies we teach…..

Important to follow the same strategies at home as we do in school.

Children can become extremely confused.

Can undo all the hard work they have achieved in class.

Why???

The strategies are very different today.

The reason for this is to enable children to gain a greater understanding of the number system and place value.

Research has shown that this way does really help

Using the long addition method (using columns) does find the right answer, however does not allow children to understand what the numbers mean.

Concrete Approach

Children are first taught the concrete approach

– Counters, bead strings

– denes

Pictorial Approach

Once children understand the concrete approach we teach the pictorial approach.

Abstract Approach

Addition

Can you add 25 and 29.

29 + 25 =

20 + 20 = 40

9 + 5 = 14

40 + 14 = 54

We teach this method so that the children understand the concept of tens and units.

Strategies…… Subtraction is taught in the same way to

encourage a greater understanding of number place value.

You would need to borrow a ten from the 40 and then use this to make 15 in the ones column. This confuses children as they learn that the ones column is for ones and is always the column with the lowest value.

We also use a blank number line method.

This shows physically taking away the tens and then the ones.
