Year 1-English Summer Term 2 - Week 2 Home Learning
In the year 1042 a man called Edward the Confessor was the King of Anglo-
Saxon England.
He reined (ruled) successfully for many
years until the year 1066.
Edward the Confessor died on the 5th of
January 1066.
After his death England needed a new
King. There were 2 people who thought
they had the right to be the new king of
England.
Lets click on the next slide and see who
they are.
There names were Harold Godwinson and William Duke of Normandy. Harold lived in England and William lived in Normandy (France). Both men thought that they should be the new King of England.
Harold thought he should
be King because he had
won a lot of battles for
the King Edward before
he died. So he thought
he deserved to be king
because of all his hard
work.
Harold Godwin
William thought he should be
the King of England because
he said that Edward had
promised him the throne. He
also was a good ruler (king)
in Normandy so thought he
could do a good job in
England too.

Both men thought that they deserved to be
king. Click on the video link to find out who the
crowned king.
In today’s lesson I want you to imagine that you can hear Harold and William arguing about who should be king.
Think carefully:What would they say to each other? Why do they think they should be King?
Remember, both men might be quite cross so you may need to use an exclamation mark to show this.
E.g. I should be king! I would make a better ruler!
Star challenges
Please select either the 1, 2 or 3 star challenge for today’s lesson.

Tuesday
In today’s lesson we are going to be
learning more about the Battle of Hastings.
RECAP: Can you remember the names of
the two people who thought they should
be King of England?
That’s right it was Harold Godwin
and William Duke of Normandy.Harold was crowned the
King of England on the 5th of
January 1066.
William was unhappy about
this as he believed he was
the rightful king so he
challenged him to a battle.
Finally! I am king!
Harold’s men were very tired because they had marched along way. William’s army sailed across the ocean. They brought horses on their ships.
The battle took place in Hastings
This is because the Normans (William’s army) had to climb a steep hill and at the top of the hill Harold’s army had locked their shields together to create a wall. The wall was strong and William could not break through it.
At first Harold’s army were
winning.
He got his archers to fire arrows at Harold’s men. The men panicked and formed a circle to protect Harold, their king. Which left gaps in the wall and meant that the Norman’s could get through.
Then William had an idea.
The arrows hurt many
of Harold’s men and
Harold which meant
that William and his
army won the battle
and William took the
crown and became
the First Norman King
of England.
My new name is William the Conqueror because I conquered
England.
William was the new
King of England and
began building
castles. Motte and
Bailey castles were
the first to be built in
England.
William also built the
Tower of London.
He built the tower to protect
himself. If anyone decided
to challenge him to a battle
he would see them coming
and be able to plan to
defeat them.
The Tower took over 20 years
to build. You can still visit it in
London today!
Now we have learnt about the battle I would like you to select your star challenge.
Star 1 – Can you infer what you think William the Conqueror’s shield looks like. Use the shield template
to show me your design.
Star 2 – Can you draw a picture of William when he has won the battle. Can you infer what he might be
thinking? Write his thoughts in a full sentence. You might want to use a speech bubble.
Star 3 – Can you create a comic strip about the Battle of Hastings? Remember to include speech
bubbles for what the people are saying.

Thursday
When William the Conqueror became king he built lots of
castles in England. One of the first castles he began
building was the Tower of London. In today’s lesson we are
going to imagine we are William the Conqueror and
design our own castle.
Thursday
We are going to be designing and making our castles
today and then describing them tomorrow. On the next
slide I will show you some examples of how you could
create a castle.
Remember to think carefully about the size, the shape, the
colours, the textures and materials.
You must be able to describe your castle in full sentences.
Castle designs
You could design and make your castle in
a number of different ways. You might
draw your castle. You might use paint and
materials. You might want to make it out
of Lego or use toilet roll cubes to create a structure. The choice is yours.
When you have decided on what you are going to use to make your castle, select your level of challenge.
Star 1 – Design and make your castle and then verbally describe it to an adult.
Star 2 –Design and make your castle and then write a list of adjectives to describe your castle. You will need these
for tomorrow’s lesson.Star 3 – Design and make your castle and then write a list of adjectives to describe your castle and also the setting.
I have attached a castle template on the website if you would like to use this to create your castle.
Friday
Yesterday you designed and created your own castle. Just
like William the Conqueror. Today we are going to be
writing a description about your castle.
Make sure you have your castle in front of you to help you
write your sentences.
Friday Think carefully about
what features of the
castle you may be
describing. You could
describe the:
-walls
-turrets
-flags
-doors
-windows
-keep
-bailey etc.
Don’t forget to write in full sentences using Capital
letters, finger spaces, and full stops. If you unsure about
how to spell a word sound it out by swiping and
clapping it.
