1 Key Stage Year 1 and Year 2 Curriculum www.ISPH.edu.vn
I am delighted to welcome you to The International School @ParkCity Hanoi. This booklet contains key information regarding the curriculum and learning experiences provided for students from age 5 to 7 years old and has been written by our Primary staff for our parents.
Key Stage 1 is your child’s first experience of a formal curriculum and we recognise that children will have had different educational experiences during their formative years. Therefore, we work hard to ensure a smooth transition from Early Years to Key Stage 1.
Our Key Stage 1 curriculum is designed to allow students to develop their key skills of reading, writing and mathematics as well as to explore the world around them through exciting themes within the International Primary Curriculum. Music, the Arts and Sport take a prominent role in the timetable and our Key Stage 1 students enjoy access to our excellent specialist facilities and resources in these areas.
The ISPH Core Values and Learning Habits in Key Stage 1 underpin the curriculum and are modelled constantly by our staff. We want our students to become independent, collaborative and resilient in their learning as well as being compassionate, supportive and respectful of their peers and the school community.
There is plenty of information contained within this booklet to help parents and families understand the content of our curriculum, however the best way to truly appreciate the teaching and learning at ISPH is to see it in action. Visitors are always welcome and I am confident you will not only see focused and engaged classrooms but also be delighted by the warm welcome, conduct and confidence of our wonderful students.
Warm regards

The emphasis in Year 1 and Year 2 is on active learning. Children are taught subject skills, knowledge and understanding through hands-on, practical experiences linked to real-life learning.
The children’s knowledge and understanding is enriched within dynamic, exciting activities both in and out of the classroom. There is an emphasis on collaboration, communication, creativity, and the importance of taking risks in our learning.
Children are encouraged to reflect positively and evaluate individual as well as group efforts. In Key Stage 1, children grow in confidence to inquire, actively seek information, plan and design ways to help themselves and others learn. In our technologically-rich environment children apply their IT skills across all areas of learning.

What do children learn in Key Stage 1?
www.ISPH.edu.vn
The Key Stage 1 curriculum is based on the UK National Curriculum. The English and Mathematics frameworks in the National Curriculum give structures and expectations for each year group.
Teaching and Learning in English and Mathematics are linked wherever possible to the International Primary Curriculum themes to provide the children a deeper understanding of the topics and a wider application of their skills.
We use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) to plan a cross-curricular, thematic curriculum. Subjects taught within IPC include Science, History, Geography, Technology, Art, Digital Studies and International Learning. The IPC, which is also based on the National Curriculum, is designed to engage children of all abilities and provide learning opportunities in an active, exciting and meaningful way. This curriculum is successfully implemented in 90+ countries worldwide and promotes personal learning as well as international-mindedness.
English in Key Stage 1
The English Framework has three main elements: reading, writing, and speaking & listening.
Reading
Children in Year 1 and Year 2 learn to read using a range of strategies. But most importantly children are immersed in a rich and broad language environment. Most children learn best using phonics to decode words. At ISPH we use the Read Write Inc. programme, the most widely used commercial scheme in the UK. This effective synthetic phonics program allows children to gain phonemic awareness and spell words with accuracy very quickly.
www.ISPH.edu.vn
Children in Key Stage 1 have access to a full range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry Home Reader books, which are levelled to match their reading age carefully. These books are sent home, shared and enjoyed by the child and their parent.
Children also have access to a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry books in their classroom and the school library to expand the scope and breadth of their reading.
As well as providing the tools to be able to read, teachers carefully plan reading across the curriculum to enable students to link what they read to their own experiences. The aim within Key Stage 1 is to give children a lifelong passion for reading and to recognise how reading helps them understand the world around them.
Writing
Children in Key Stage 1 learn to write in a range of different genres, which are often related to the IPC theme being studied. In this way the children are making connections across subjects and the learning is made more real to them.
Children are encouraged to ‘have a go’ at writing and to apply their developing phonic skills to their writing. They learn to spell the ‘tricky’ words as whole words. The children in Year 1 and 2 begin writing words and recording their ideas and develop skills in planning their writing. They acquire strategies for sustained and meaningful writing both for themselves and other readers. The children in this phase have the opportunity to write their own stories, poetry, instructions, posters, letters and other texts.
Speaking & Listening
Speaking and listening are essential skills and the mastery of these skills is needed to develop both reading and writing. Year 1 and 2 students spend a lot of time talking with each other and the teacher before writing takes place. This can take many forms such as question and answer sessions, role-play, dialogue between characters, or the giving and following of instructions. Students are given the opportunity to share their learning with a wider audience and also develop their listening skills as part of an audience, and extend and enrich their vocabulary.

Central to the Mathematics framework for all children is developing the skills to be able to solve problems and carry out mathematical tasks. Relating the tasks and problems to other curriculum areas and real life ensures that children find Mathematics creative and engaging. The development and application of IT skills is an important part of the Maths curriculum. Children in Years One and Two solve problems through learning the skills of:
Sorting, Ordering, Grouping, Measuring, Calculating, Comparing, Manipulating Organising and Interpreting Information.
Mathematics Objectives for Year 1 & Year 2
These can be read in more detail here.
We use a range of scheme and teacher-designed activities to enrich the children’s learning in Mathematics. Our main scheme is Abacus Evolve, although we also use other supplementary schemes and resources.
The International Primary Curriculum (IPC)
www.ISPH.edu.vn
The International Primary Curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum but sets learning within an international context. It provides a thematic, cross-curricular structure with rigorous personal and academic targets. The latest research on the way children learn is encompassed and is fully integrated into the approach to teaching. The approach and organisation of IPC supports teachers to enable them to bring learning to life. The IPC focuses on four main aims to support learning and teaching: To help children learn the subject knowledge, skills and understandings they need to become aware of the world around them. To help children develop the personal skills they need to take an active part in the world throughout their lives. To help children develop an international mindset alongside their awareness of their own nationality. We do each of these in ways that take into account up-to-date research into how children learn and how they can be encouraged to be lifelong learners.
English and Maths are set within the context of the IPC wherever possible. The following subject areas are specifically covered within the themes:
● Science
● Geography
● History
● Society
● International Learning
● Technology
● Art
● Creative Arts
● Digital Studies
The following subject areas are taught by specialist teachers and are linked to IPC
themes where possible:
● Music
● Drama
● Vietnamese
● Spanish
● Physical Education
● Swimming

Co-Curricular Activities in Key Stage 1
Our CCA programme is a key part of the school experience that we offer, and one that we are rightly proud of.
Our CCA programme aims to promote enjoyment and fun while broadening student experiences, present new challenges and provide opportunities for activities that they would not otherwise be able to experience.
Through our comprehensive CCA programme we hope to further student interest and learning through sport, creative arts, academics and music. Student are able to actively build friendships with children from lower or higher age groups and develop their teamwork, leadership and communication skills.
Our CCA programme provides a mix of teacher-led and specialist co-curricular activities Specialist CCAs are paid activities and enable us to invite external experts into the school to lead activities that teachers are unable to offer.

Learning Support
Our Learning Support programme is designed to provide students who require additional
academic assistance with the support they need. Whilst Learning Support includes EAL (English
as an Additional Language) lessons, the support offered to students is very much tailored to the
individual. Students may have access to one or more areas of the Learning Support programme
alongside their mainstream studies.
Ms Amy French is the Head of Learning Support and she works closely with teaching staff to
ensure each student’s needs are catered for.
EAL (English as an Additional Language) Please see the information found on the next, and subject information pages for more
information on the EAL programme in Key Stage 1.
Learning SupportLearning Support is provided for those students who need some additional support with their
studies, this may be for a short period of time to boost their subject knowledge or it may be
over a longer period of time to help develop key skills. These sessions can take place in small
groups and groupings are determined by the needs of the individual students. Learning Support
will often target needs in the core subjects (English and Maths) but may sometimes support
other curriculum subjects too. Learning Support can also support students with social skills and
organisation.
SEN SupportSpecial Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support is provided for students with specific
and identified needs and is carefully planned to support these needs. SEND support may take
place on an individual or group basis and the frequency of this varies depending on the needs
of the student. SEND support may take the form of in-class support by a specialist Learning
Support Assistant or it may be out of class in a group or 1:1 environment.
For more information on any of the above, please contact Ms Amy ([email protected])

English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Our EAL programme is designed to develop the English language skills of students to enable them to be academically successful in the classroom and communicate effectively in social situations.
Students can be identified as a candidate for the EAL programme in a number of different ways;
● Information from a previous school ● Admission assessment results ● Interview with the student● Dialogue with the parents ● Observations of classroom teachers
Our specialist EAL staff use a Cambridge English curriculum and this is supported by a variety of resources and materials. Our EAL staff are forwarding thinking and progressive; they are always looking for new ways to make learning fun and bring the content to life. The curriculum caters for beginners (CEFR Level A0 and A1, see the diagram below), up to component English language uses (CEFR Level A2).
The number of EAL classes a student undertakes each week is determined by their English language ability. Students at CEFR Level A0 or A1 will take four additional English language lessons per week whilst students who at CEFR Level A2 will take two. Once a certain level of competency is reached, B1 and above, students no longer need EAL support and will instead study a new language.
Students are assessed on their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Assessments are conducted each half-term with CEFR levels being reviewed after each assessment.

Community Outreach and Life Skills (COALS)
What is COALS?
COALS is a planned programme of learning through which young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.
As part of ISPH’s whole school approach, COALS develops the qualities and attributes students need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
The benefits of this approach are numerous as COALS prepares our students to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up in such a rapidly changing and challenging world. COALS also helps each student connect and apply the knowledge and understanding they gain from all subjects to practical, real-life situations while helping them feel safe and secure enough to fulfill their academic potential.
Why is COALS provision important to ISPH?
COALS makes a major contribution to ISPH’s commitment to provide a curriculum that is broadly based and meets the needs of all students. Within the programme ISPH aims to:
● Prepare students at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life
● Promote the moral, cultural, mental and physical development of students at the school and of society
● Promote a sense of community ● Promote children and young people’s wellbeing, promotion of physical and mental
health; emotional wellbeing; social and economic well-being; education, training and recreation; recognition of the contribution made by children to community
COALS is part of ISPH’s whole school approach and does not exist in isolation. The relationship between COALS provision and school ethos is strong and hugely important. An effective school ethos requires:
● Effective relationships between all members of the school community ● Students to play an active part in decision making ● School policies to be compatible with what is taught in COALS education

We are very proud of the teaching and learning that takes place within ISPH
and is described within this document, however the best way to truly
appreciate the teaching and learning at ISPH is to see it in action. Visitors are
always welcome. Please feel free to contact me or our friendly admissions
