McKinney Red, White & Boomby Sherry Williams

Well, It’s another typical Texas afternoon here in McKinney at the annual car show and everyone with a clean car is here to gather for some 4th of July gearhead chatter. The sheriff is in attendance with his Purple Chevy. Terry Box is a fixture at local car shows all over Collin County and the Red White & Boom Car Show here in McKinney is no different. Babe is very popular with the younger set--her Magnetic Metallic Red is enough to draw them for a closer look. Yep, here comes another one... I won a prize and Tom Lainson was at the show too!

My Father had taken very good care of my 1970 LT1 while I was in Vietnam, but these cars were not built with air conditioning due to their high RPM. When I returned from Vietnam I was assigned to Fort Knox in Kentucky and it seemed every time I went for a drive it would be raining or driz-zling and with no air conditioning sitting just inches above the 2.5 inch exhaust pipes, it was like sitting in a sauna! So, I (foolishly) decided to sell my 1970 LT1 road-ster and ordered the car documented in this article from the factory. I again worked with Chester Kittle

at V.V Cooke Chevrolet in Louisville Kentucky. The full price was $6,943.40 with options and the car was built on May 30, 1972 and delivered June 8, 1972.

The dealer inventory number was 5394 as noted on much of the original docu-mentation discussed herein. It was first registered in Jefferson County, Kentucky where I was living at the Iroquois Garden Apartments in Louisville where the earli-est found photograph at the top of the page was taken.

On May 17 ,1974 I had the car repainted a 1953 Cadillac Burgundy Maroon in Radcliff, Kentucky after a Colonel’s wife bumped into the car parked in front of

my barber’s shop. I also switched the hood to a 1973 hood, but retained the original hood and wiper door mechanism. The cost to change the color was $50.00 yes, fiftydollars. It was a daily driver until stored long before I began restoration at 146,000 miles. Fortunately, even with all my moves since 1972, I retained virtually all original components and documentation for the car and during the careful disassembly, I captured im-ages of many markings regardless of how obscure. By way of many Google searches and emails in 2012, I made contact with V. V. Cooke, Jr. who graciously autographed several items for me and I obtained new V. V. Cooke license plate frames. Mr. Cooke also sent me a vintage dealer plate that is always on when the car is shown. Very cool! On February 22, 2012 the “rat” motor came to life again after a long rest and on May 19, 2012, the car was “revealed” at its first show just shy of forty years after it was built. She was awarded “Judges Pick” and Best of Class in a show with hundreds of entries. NCRS judging also awarded a “Top Flight”.

RESTORATION CREDIT Disassembly and reassembly was largely com-pleted by owner. Automobile Performance Unlimited of Fort Worth Texas completed the car and tuned it to absolute perfection. Motor was rebuilt, blue printed and balanced by Wayne Calvert Precision Engines of Denton, Texas Body and paint was completed by Winged Graph-ics of Roanoke, Texas

Ron Spurlock & Leslie Mello 214-704-6902 Only 1 year, 1 month, and 1 week left. Some of you may recall that about four years ago I com-mented that we would soon wake up and it would be 2014. Well, not much further to go! So if you haven’t registered for the caravan at this point, you might want to just do that. Although the Anniversary Cel-ebration events haven’t been posted yet, rest as-sured they will sell out quickly when they are. Those who register early for the caravan will get priority for the events. So, don’t let the opportunity pass you by. And many thanks to the over 2000 of you who have already registered. Best of Pat GossQuestions and Answers

about your Corvettefrom the Leading Expert in America

(Reprinted from NOCA 2001*)

Dear Pat: My ‘82 Vette Collector Edition, Bowling Green, 700 R-4 trans, 80,000 mi.; is shifting too early after it’s warmed up. Normally it would drop to around 1500 RPM after each shift under easy acceleration, but recently it shifts earlier after warm-up and lugs the engine down to around 1000 RPM. It will rev higher under harder acceleration and will downshift under harder throttle. Its shop manual does not seem to address this particular problem directly. I’d like to know why it shifts properly and more smoothly for the first three or four miles, and whether a trottle valve cable adjustment for normal operating temps would likely cause overrevving before shifting when cold? I would prefer knowing your suggestions before any adjustments are made. Also I’d appreciate your advice before having the trans. oil changed... I don’t know it’s history, and am considering the BG or Tri-botech additive. A: Sound’s like a very minor problem: Early or late shifts on most GM ‘80’s vintage transmissions, includ-ing your 700, can almost always be traced to your throttle valve cable. Typically, adjusting the TV cable will eliminate the problem. In your case the retaining latch would be released and the cable body moved toward the rear of the car 1/8th inch, then the latch would be reset, and the car road tested. All adjust-ments, all road testing, must be done at normal oper-ating temperature. Should you be wondering, the reason the shift is normal when the transmission is cold is, your trannie fluid is thicker or more viscous. With thicker fluid, line pressures will be higher and the shift will occur later. As the fluid warms, it becomes thinner or less viscous and line pressures drop slightly. For the most part, throttle valve cables have been replaced by electronic circuitry for more precise shift control under all conditions.

Dear Pat: My 1990 Corvette L-98 has the following modifications: Forced Air/K&N filter, ADS computer chip, Borla exhaust, and a free flow catalytic converter, I’m trying to get the most “bang for the buck” I can. It runs well but seems to always run in the 220 degree and above range on a hot day. My question: Will a 160-degree thermostat and a lighter type of pulley system give this Corvette any more power?A: Yes and No. I’m not talking out of both sides of my mouth but you’ve fallen victim to the erroneous notion that afflicts 99.999% of all the people who work on and around cars. Thermostats have little or no effect on maximum temperature. They only control minimum temperature. It works like this. If you’re currently using a 195-degree thermostat and the car is running 220 degrees on a hot day, it will still run 220 degrees on a hot day with a 160-degree thermostat. It will only run colder when the outside temperature is lower. So--what’s the answer? A 160-degree thermostat and a constant running electric cooling fan might do the trick. Moving more air through the radiator will exchange more heat and push the tem-perature down to the minimum allowed by your 160-de-gree thermostat. Next is your under-driven pulley system. These add to power output by turning accessories more slowly. Now here’s the rub. Your Vette is an L98 and therefore has a belt driven water pump. OOPS! Under-driven pulleys turn the water pump more slowly, thereby in-creasing coolant temperature. HEY, the coolant doesn’t circulate as fast and can’t exchange as much heat as quickly. All right. Now let’s get serious abut this. Your 195-degree thermostat and your 220-degree operating temperature are great. Leave it alone. Higher operating temperatures mean better fuel economy and a much longer engine life. The reason you get better perfor-mance if the engine runs cooler is, colder tempera-tures command a richer fuel mixture and the computer receives its temperature information from the coolant temperature sensor. So splicing an appropriate variable resistor into the coolant temperature sensor circuit will give you the ability to fool the computer into thinking the engine is cold. With the variable resistor installed you’ll be able to dial in the amount of fuel and performance you want when you want it. On the other hand, for normal driving you can return the variable resistor to the normal setting and achieve normal performance and fuel economy. Finally. THIS IS ILLEGAL. I am only telling you about it because I am sure, as with most Corvette own-ers, that yours is used in off-road situations only.

Seen on Corvette Forum... I just got back from the SVRA vintage rac-es at Watkins Glen. While there, we learned that the Duntov Motors transporter, burned on the way to The Glen! For those not familiar with Duntov Motors, they build vintage Corvette race cars and are a GM licensed builder of Grand Sport replicas.www.duntovmotors.com I don’t know all the details, but somewhere between their shop in Texas, and Watkins Glen, NY, Duntov Motors’ trailer caught fire. The fire started in either a brake or wheel bearing, in one of the trailer’s wheels. There were four Corvettes in the trailer, three Corvette race cars, and a brand new Duntov build replica Grand Sport. I’m not exactly sure, which cars were in the trailer, but I do know that one of them belonged to Tony Parella, the CEO of the SVRA. We had the opportunity to talk to Tony on Saturday night, and it sounded like his ‘71 AP racer, was one of the cars lost. He told us that the Grand Sport was a car that Duntov

had just completed for a customer, and was to be displayed at Watkins Glen, before being delivered to the customer. I believe the third car was a ‘68 AP racer that Duntov built and maintained for it’s owner, and the final car was the black ‘69 AP racer, that belonged to the Duntov Motors owners, Alan and Ed Sevadjian. All four cars, along with the trailer, tractor and the team’s spare parts and tools; were completely destroyed. Luckily though, no one was hurt.

This is all that’s left.
