CAREER DEVELOPMENT CASE STUDY Tell us about your role as Customer Services Development Manager I line manage and mentor all designers and developers in the Customer Services Team. As part of my role, I coordinate all design and development resource for the Helpdesk and all customer account work, ensuring that we can service our customers and accounts effectively. I wear a number of other hats including generating all customer account quotes, writing specifications and when the scheduling allows, some development too. Tell us about your background and education Right from GCSE level I was interested in computing and have always enjoyed programming in a number of different languages. Therefore, I studied Computer Science at De Montfort University, then went straight into a Progress Development role at a Leicester-based company after graduating. After this I joined Prima Solutions which offered new opportunities and challenges, so have always been involved in the development of Progress software in particular throughout my career. What does your Prima Journey look like? I started at Prima Solutions as a Progress Developer, and was then encouraged to move into design and specification writing. I was given the opportunity to mentor new developers and designers, gradually taking on more responsibilities such as helping them with their Personal Development Plans. As part of the design role, I began to take a senior position and got involved in creating quotes for various customer requirements across Customer Services. I was then given the opportunity to line manage the development and design resource in the Customer Services Team, with Andrew Gretton managing the support half of the Customer Services Team. The creation of the Operational Management Team also allowed me to ensure the coordination of standards and quality across all areas of the business. What has allowed your career to develop here? Quite simply, it's the supportive management structure. The directors are very open and genuinely believe in people (and my natural talents of course!). With genuine support for career progression and tools such as the Personal Development Plan, you have real opportunities to shine, but ultimately it's up to the individual to show what they can do. There's also a great bunch of people that work here and everyone is approachable. This supportive working environment is another big contribution to people's career development here. How has working at Prima benefited your career? To get up to management level in such a short space of time has only been possible in the way that Prima Solutions has supported me in my career.
