Analyzed the Art & Architecture maga-zines case study house 21 by Richard Neutra as a conceptual precedent and designed a self-sustainable addition on the same site by drawing, exploring and employing the structural and spatial rela-tionships from the original architecture. My new structure is the result of the ex-
tending grid of Neutra’s house as it grows into the landscape below grade, calling for both horizontal and vertical connec-tions between the two units that share outdoor spaces in between, while still maintaining privacy individually by giving each a private entrance and parking.

After optimizing programmatic relation-ships for maximized spatial and func-tional effi ciency specifi c to the theatre typology, the concept of “looking in” was introduced in attempt to challenge the conventional theater setup by public insertion into the auditorium in various forms. These insertions, occurring both on the sidewalk and inside the building, not only blur the line between public and pri-vate, but also enable auditorium spaces with varying degrees of formality.

03 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT SPRING 2009 TEAM OF 4 INSTRUCTOR: TOM WISCOMBE, HERWIG BAUMGARTNER
Taking a theatre project design in the previous semester into design develop-ment phase by producing an extensive set of drawings (not shown here) as well as creating structural and building envelope strategies. This project focuses primarily on the complex building skin system that is designed to be prefabri-cated (see exploded axon on right) then installed into the structural frame on site. While the nub, as we like to call it, shown here serve as windows, others have been proposed to perform as vents as well as seatings.

This is an exploration into the symbiotic relation-ship between the culture of movement and the unique architecture to which it gave rise. We propose to incorporate automobile infrastructure as a catalyst for reinventing urban living. By using the automobile to push architecture and concurrently using architecture to push the way automobiles are perceived, we believe such intervention would introduce a new typology that operates at three scales: city, infra-structure and architecture. This project uses the air rights over the freeway to propose a new type of urban condition, one that accepts the role of the automobile as an important driver for urban development in Los Angeles.
