Chapters Bookstore Welcomes Ruth Bass

Chapters Bookstore will welcome author Ruth Bass to the event room on Saturday January 10, at 3PM for a reading and signing of her book Sarah’s Daughter.

A career newspaper woman, Ruth Bass published her first novel, “Sarah’s Daughter,” in 2007 at the age of 72. She was born July 18, 1934 in Amherst, Massachusetts, and grew up in various New England communities. A graduate of Westfield (MA) High School and Bates College, she earned a master of science degree in journalism from Columbia University where she also received the Tennessee Williams Award for creative journalism.

She has been a police reporter, newspaper feature magazine editor and Sunday editor for The Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She still writes a weekly column for The Eagle and one year was named by United Press International as the best columnist in New England. She is also a free-lance travel writer, a member of the Society of American Travel Writers, author of ten published cookbooks and has worked as an editor at Storey Publishing Co. in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and The Independent, a twice weekly newspaper in Hillsdale, New York. She has won many prizes for writing and editing and a few years ago was inducted into the New England Newspaper Association’s Hall of Fame for her contributions to community journalism.

Her first journalism experience came in sixth grade when she cre-ated a school newspaper. At Bates, she was editor of the student news-paper. She has also been a selectman in her town, a commercial bank director and a member of the town finance and health boards. She was named Woman of the Year by the Professional and Business Women’s Association of Pittsfield and is a winner of the Charles and Mary Kusik Citizenship Award in her town.

Her novel is based on a tiny kernel of knowledge about how her grandmother, at the age of 14, faced bringing up two siblings, running a household, coping with her increasingly alcoholic father. “I was a Girl Scout leader for years and became aware that my scouts faced many of the same problems that confronted my grandmother in the 1880’s and decided a book might be in there somewhere.” Since her grandmother did not talk about her experiences as a teenager, the book is almost entirely fictional, although its historical aspect - especially the daily life in a rural community - was carefully researched.

She is married to novelist and newspaper columnist Milton Bass.

Free Preschool Program In The Galleries

Get preschoolers off to a good start...with art (and have a lot of fun, too). The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s Start with Art program is an exciting, free series for preschoolers and their parents on the second Saturday of each month through March. Special gallery talks and art activities will be held from 10 am to 12 pm and are best suited for three- to six-year-olds and their parents. Saturday, January 10, will focus on the theme of storytelling. Parents and children are invited to attend any or all of the sessions. Art project appropriate clothing encouraged.

On January 10, adults and preschoolers will begin the morning by exploring the collection with a gallery guide designed to help adults look at and talk about art in a developmentally appropriate way with their children. Stops on this self-guided tour include Winslow Homer’s dramatic rescue scene Undertow.

Age-appropriate “painting talks” will introduce families to eye-opening details in some of the best-loved works of art at the Clark. Discover At the Concert by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Portrait of Konstanze von Habsburg by Joseph Heintz the Elder.

The fun continues with hands-on activities focused on storytelling. Bring a paper bag to life by crafting it into a puppet. Decorate the cover of a small blank book and start to fill it with your own stories. In addition, coloring sheets featuring works of art in the Clark’s collection will be available.

Start with Art continues on February 14 focusing on color and shape, and faces in the collection will be explored on March 14. The program is supported in part by funding from Greylock Federal Credit Union.

A visit to the Clark is a rewarding family experience year-round with 140 acres of scenic meadows and trails providing ample opportunities for families to hike, cross-country ski, snowshoe, sled, or spot the many birds inhabiting the area. The Clark’s grounds are open to the public free of charge. Free admission to the galleries

is always offered to children 18 and under and students with valid ID.The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown. The galleries are

Firkin Madness

Join Pittsfield Brew Works on Wednesday January 7 from 8-10 p.m. to enjoy their new Organic Vanilla Bean Stout as part of their Firkin Madness program.

A firkin is one quarter of an English barrel (10.73 US gallons) and used by pubs throughout Britain to serve traditional cask ale. Cask ale is beer that is transferred into the firkin during its fermentation. This allows the beer to mature and develop carbonation in the firkin. This is a very traditional meth-od of brewing beer. Beer was served this way until the Industrial Revolution and the advent of refrigeration. There is a small group of traditional pubs throughout the world that still serve beer in this fashion. Cask ale is creamier and full of more flavor than its draught counterpart. This is due to the natural maturation in the firkin. It also allows us to experiment with different flavors on a small scale.

We at Pittsfield Brew Works are very proud to be a part of this tradition. We offer the only cask ale in all of Berkshire County. Come join us on Wednesdays (usually every other) to sample the different offerings we create. Every pint of the Firkin is $3 and $1 of every pint goes to The Kid’s Place on Wendell Ave. Next Firkin: Wednesday, January 14, 2009 Oak & Bourbon Irish Red.
