Chauk Htat Gyi Reclining BuddhaOne of Myanmar’s more revered reclining Buddhas. It is housed in a large metal-roofed shed, only a short distance, located north east of the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Monasteries in the vicinity of the pagoda accommodate over six hundred monks who study Buddhist Scriptures from senior and qualified monks. The entire cost of maintenance comes from donations.

The Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda is famous for its huge reclining Buddha, built in 1966 replacing the old image built in 1907 by Sir Hpo Thar which suffered damage due to climate over the years. The reclining Buddha measures 65 meters in length and 16 meters high. The soles of the feet contain 108 segments in red and gold colors that show images representing the 108 lakshanas or auspicious characteristics of the Buddha.

Hence it is generally referred to as the six-tiered pagodas.

The heavy cost of this construction was entirely donated by the people. The image is larger than the image of the Reclining Buddha at Shwe Thar Hlyaung Pagoda in Bago.

Buddhist people pay their respect to the Reclining Buddha burning incense sticks and offering flowers. Around the Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha image is a number of shrines, one for each of the eight days of the week in Asian astrology (Wednesday is split in two days).

Local people pray to the shrine belonging to the day of their birth.

The original image was completed in 1907. When after many decades the Chauk Htat Gyi image was in a bad state of repair, a devout Buddhist decided to restore it.During renovations in 1966 about 5 meters were added to the image. The renovation was paid for entirely with donations from Buddhists and foreign tourists. The names of the contributors are inscribed on the beams of the building.

Just across the street from the Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda is another temple, the Ngar Htat Gyi Pagoda that contains another huge Buddha image, a seated one.

Hence Ngar-Htat-Kyi Pagoda means the pagoda with five-layered roof. The abbot's monastery in close proximity of the pagoda is of fine Chinese design

Most Myanmar are Buddhist of the Theravada stream. Central to their religious beliefs is karma, the concept that good begets good and evil begets evils.

A huge image of seated Buddha is housed in a pavilion of iron structure with a five-tiered CGI roof.

Ngar Htat Kyi (or) the five tiered Buddha Image is a sitting Buddha image.

This Buddha image is different from other images in the style of using Magite (armours) around the image

While here, also have a look at the clever artwork of the Buddha in three-dimensional form followed by a long line of disciples, which starts as a few sculptures and slowly changes and blends into the painting behind. Images together with the paintings at the back to give the look of Buddha with the long chain of his disciples

The Naga

Ngar Htat Gyi Pagoda is located on Shwe Gon Taing Road, Tamwe Township, just across the Chauk Htat Kyi Pagoda.
