QUICKEN THE PULSE,
INSPIRE THE SPIRIT.
Yamahas R1 and R6 are legends of road and track,
but it isnt just because of their horsepower and
torque figures, or their use of exotic lightweight alloys.
These are machines designed specifically to lift you
to a higher plane by magnifying the physical and
emotional experience in the never-ending pursuit of
sports riding perfection.
From engine to chassis to visual architecture - the all-
new R6 and the legendary R1 continue to push the
boundaries of contemporary supersport performance
with feelgood technology. Because Yamaha
develops engineering philosophies that enhance the
communication between rider and machine in both
directions.
It is this sensory character that makes the out-and-
out performance so uplifting and satisfying. Its also
the reason you speak in an adrenalin-fuelled gibberish
right after you finish riding an R series machine.

The R1 is a ridgy-didge supersport icon there we said
it. Flat out nothing else in the category carries the same
reputation, the same kind of respect, or carries itself with
the same unique style as a Yamaha R1. The legend of
the R1 is built on a platform of incredible responsiveness
that reacts almost telepathically to rider input. And that
legend perpetuates because our engineers understand
that superbike performance is the ultimate thrill only if
its built into a package that can eat out of your hand
without biting it off.
The current short-stroke 998cc DOHC, 16-valve, liquid-
cooled inline four-cylinder engine is the most tractable
ever, and its mated to a compact chassis with the kind
of agility and steering precision you have to experience
to believe.
Thats why after five generations, the R1 is still winning
fans and winning races thanks to its ability to make
massive performance massively useable.
POWER CONTROL TECHNOLOGY
The YCC-T (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) electronic
throttle technology offers a 32-bit ECU fuel injection
system for super-responsive, smooth, instantaneous
power delivery. It senses the riders wrist position at
super-high speed and the ECU unit instantly calculates
the optimal throttle valve opening and actively controls
intake air speed.
SIMPLY EFFECTIVE
The YCC-I (Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake) system is the
first electronically controlled and driven variable-intake
funnel system ever fitted to a production motorcycle.
On most motorcycles the air funnel length is fixed, and
set for either high rpm performance or low-/mid-range
performance. The R1 does not need to compromise,
using simple yet clever technology to electronically switch
funnel length between 65mm and 140mm, ensuring that
the intake tracts are always tuned to the ideal length for
the prevailing rpm.
TECHNO TOP END
The combustion chamber enables big power with clean
emissions, in a 4-valve head layout that uses titanium
intake valves and high spec components resulting in a valve
train that is both lightweight and strong. It all contributes
to the R1s new breadth of power, 12.7 compression ratio
and 180PS output at 12,500rpm without ram air.

5/12
With its explosive acceleration in the over 10,000 rpm
range, scalpel-sharp throttle response, light and nimble
cornering performance and unrivalled styling, Yamahas
new R6 is a world powerhouse in super sport. Its a regular
race winner on the world s tage and it has utterly dominated
Australian Supersport racing in 2006 and 2007.
When the 2008 R6 was developed, it was with two
clear performance goals: To provide the widest grin on
that Sunday arvo blast up the mountain and to offer the
biggest buzz around the racetrack. This means faster
turn-in, greater exit speed, and sharper response and
assurance than ever before.
To achieve these goals we had to reach a new level with
engine and frame development, using cutting-edge control
technologies.
Though designed on a computer and developed in the
lab, these technologies are perfected using the emotional
tuning expertise of highly experienced riders in repeated
circuit tests, and they give the new R6 a more planted,
more confident and satisfying feel than ever before.
The result is a machine that extends both the emotional
and technical dynamics of the sensational 2007 model
a scary thought for our road racing opponents.
ITS IN THE BALANCE
Our chassis team further sweetened the R6s handling
by improving rigidity balance and mass-centralisation,
in a fully fine-tuned Deltabox chassis that sports a new
magnesium subframe. The result is a more secure feel
from the front wheel, and a more stable and confidence-
inspiring ride.
FEEL YOUR WAY
From the riders seat, youll notice these changes as
improved steering feedback that enhances stability under
brakes and makes it easier to hold a line under lean. A
more accurate entry allows a rider to get on the juice
earlier and harder on exit, translating into more distance
between the R6 and the competition.
SIX APPEAL
More fun, more exciting and faster than ever; the new
model has all those qualities that R6 aficionados love.
And the new R6 was specially designed not only to be
faster on a racetrack, but more more exciting to ride at
legal speeds through the twisties. A highly emotional
machine that responds to a riders every command and
every emotion.

BACK ER IN
Everyone can hold the throttle wide open up the
straight, its how well everything works after you close
the go-tube that will make the biggest difference to
how competitive your lap is. With the R1s slipper
clutch metering the amount of back torque, you get
outstanding control and accuracy, and blisteringly
fast corner entry.
The slipper clutch enables changes in clutch plate
pressure when torque force comes to bear on the
crank from the rear wheel, and exemplifies whatis most remarkable about the R1 engine - not only
the amount of power, but the linearity and superb
transitional characteristics of that p ower.
STIFF AND FLEXIBLE
As chassis loads continue to escalate its only
logical that the chassis itself should be a tuneable
component. Our engineers have identified specific
areas of the frame where stiffer is better, and others
where flex provides the key to good handling.
By tuning flex quotients of the main frame, rear arm
and fork, Yamaha created an optimal rigidity balancefor the new YZF-R1. As a result, chassis response to
initial steering inputs is light and responsive while
stability in high-speed turns is excellent, and overall
handling qualities simply brilliant.
Cornerstones of the R1 icon
The R1s slipper clutch provides outstanding control of engine
braking by adjusting clutch plate pressure when torque force
comes to bear on the crank from the rear wheel. Faster into the
corner means faster out.
Yamahas YCC-I variable intake is simple in its actuation, but highly
effective in its operation. A simple actuator switches the funnel
length according to engine rpm and the degree of throttle opening.
A forced air induction system increases intake efficiency by
utilising the natural air flow captured by the upper cowl to
pressurise the air box, boosting maximum power output and
contributing to the YZF-R1s outstanding acceleration.
Rear suspension has a progressive character, with compression
damping adjustment via a two-way mechanism that can be set
for low-speed and high-speed riding. The result is more effective
traction.
The YCC-T control unit features a CPU with high-speed control function capable of
reading changes in parameters at 1000th of a second. Thats high-speed control
for smooth and linear operating characteristics and faithful response to the riders
slightest actions.
To maximise grip levels and handling confidence the perfect balance of lateral and
torsional rigidity is essential, and when its right, its superb. We think youll agree,
the R1 feels right.
The R1s fracture split con rods provide extremely precise and
strong big end connections. In this method, the large end of
the rod is shock-split by means of a wedge, then rejoined along
matching contours and bolted together in assembly.
YZF-R1 employs strong, lightweight four-valve per cylinder layout
with titanium intake valves and VX alloy valve springs for high
power output.
Oblate mufflers add a stylish yet menacing embellishment to the R1s lean tail cone,
and something for your riding mates to watch.

GIVE HER MORE BERRIES
Yamahas engineers have increased torque by
raising the R6s compression ratio from 12.8:1 to
13.1:1. Plus, in addition to the YCC-T (Yamaha Chip-
Controlled Throttle) electronically controlled throttle,
the new R6 gets the YCC-I (Yamaha Chip-Controlled
Intake) variable-length intake funnels used on the R1
for broader power and high-rpm punch.
The many engine improvements include new domed
piston crowns for a more compact combustion
chamber, as well as new valve springs for even greaterdurability and reliability under the higher combustion
pressures. Crank bearings, camchain and the
camchain tensioner have also been tweaked to suit.
SHES BEEN FRAMED
Increased power and control demanded a new
chassis so Yamaha engineers set about increasing the
thickness of important areas such as the headstock
and swingarm pivots while shaving weight from other
less vital areas. By completely revising the rigidity
balance in such a fashion, the riding experience has
been elevated to further inspire confidence and to
provide superb response.
Complementing the improved power output is all-
new mapping for the dual-injector fuel injection and
ignition timing, as well as modifications to other
electronic controls.
ALL THE RIGHT BUTTONS
Testing and development of the new bike didnt just
take place in the wind tunnel and engine dyno but
also out on the test track, where Yamahas test riders
tuned the bike to push your buttons.
YZF-R6State-of-the-art technology
Based on rpm and the degree of throttle opening, YCC-I instantly
switches the air funnel length to improve cylinder filling and
therefore, output. This improves transitional power characteristics
and power feel from mid-range through to 14,500rpm.
A new-design piston with a slightly convex head shape and
shallower valve recess contributes to a higher compression ratio of
13.1 : 1 (the existing mod el is 12.8 : 1) - the highest on a Yamaha
production motorcycle.
The new crankshaft bearing is wider and stronger, and the titanium
intake/exhaust valves are acutated by uprated alloy springs of the
highest possible stress tolerance and fatigue strength. It adds up
to consistently high performance over long hours of circuit riding.
Bodywork is redesigned for a smoother airflow and to
accommodate the higher compression ratio, the shape of the
intake mouth of the air cleaner box has been redesigned to reduce
airflow resistance and improve intake efficiency.
The wall thicknesses of the head pipe and the knee-grip panel have been finely
adjusted and the cross-member between the left and right frame halves eliminated
to achieve a completely new rigidity and strength balance, further improving the
unique R6 handling.
New settings for the twin injector fuel injection system and the YCC-T (Yamaha
Chip Controlled Throttle) system provide awesome response. The system optimises
the drive torque curve and intake airflow speed so you get smooth control
characteristics.
The rigidity balance of the fork outer tubes has been adjusted
and the fork offset increased to complement the new frame while
two-way damping adjustment maximises setting options. A new
under-bracket also contributes to better front end stability.
The R6s hybrid rear arm is a new design, with ribs added inside
the cast rear portion, and the end piece changed from extruded
aluminium to a forged aluminium part in order to optimise the
rigidity balance.
The magnesium alloy rear frame is the first of its kind on a Yamaha, and achieves
a weight reduction of approximately 450g as well as an increase in mass
centralisation.
