    YAMAHA History

    Yamaha Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation and conglomerate

    based in Japan with a wide range of products and services, predominantly musical

    instruments, electronics, motorcycles and power sports equipment.

    Established in 1887 as a piano and reed organ manufacturer by Torakusu Yamaha

    as Nippon Gakki Company, Limited (literally Japan Musical Instrument

    Manufacturing Corporation) in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka , Yamahas origins as a

    musical instrument manufacturer is still reflected today in the group's logoa trio

    of interlocking tuning forks.

    It was only after World War II,the companys then president Genichi Kawakami

    decided to use the remains of the company's war-time production machinery and

    the company's expertise in metallurgical technologies to the manufacture of

    motorcycles.The first Yamaha bike,The YA-1 (AKA the "Red Dragonfly"), of which

    125 were built in the first year of production (1954), was named in honour of the

    founder. It was a 125cc, single cylinder, two-stroke, street bike.The YA-1 was got

    much appreciation and its popularity & success resulted in the founding of the

    Yamaha Motors Co.,Ltd.

    Since then,YMC has never looked back and has continued to manufacture 2

    wheelers and has acted as a key player in the automotive industry.

    Also, Yamaha has grown to become the world's largest manufacturer of musical

    instruments , as well as a leading manufacturer of semiconductors, audio/visual,

    computer related products, sporting goods, home appliances, specialty metals and

    industrial robots.

    Yamaha entered the Indian market in 1985 as IYM and after 11 years,entered into

    a 50% partnership with the Escorts Group in 1996.In August 2001 again, Yamaha

    acquired its remaining stake becoming a 100% subsidiary of Yamaha Motor Co.,

    Ltd, Japan (YMC). In 2008, YMC entered into an agreement with Mitsui & Co., Ltd.

    to become a joint investor in the motorcycle manufacturing company "India

    Yamaha Motor Private Limited (IYM)".

    Recently, in April 2013 the IYM split into three different companies making two

    separate units for Sales and Research & Development.

    1. IYM(India Yamaha Motors Pvt.,Ltd.)

    2.YMRI(Yamaha Motors Research & Development India)

    3.YMSIL(Yamaha Motors Sales Inida Limited)

    IYM operates from its state-of-the-art manufacturing units at Surajpur(Greater

    Noida) in Uttar Pradesh and Faridabad in Haryana and produces motorcycles for

    both domestic and export markets. With a strong workforce of more than 2,000

    employees, IYM is highly customer-driven and has a countrywide network of over

    400 dealers. Presently, its product portfolio includes VMAX (1,679cc), YZF-R1

    (998cc), FZ1(998cc), YZF-R15 version 2.0 (150cc), Fazer (153cc), FZ-S (153cc), FZ16

    (153cc), SZ-R(153cc), SZ-X (153cc), SS125 (123cc), YBR 125 (123cc), YBR 110

    (106cc), Crux (106cc), Ray(113cc) and the recently launched Ray Z.

    IYM Surajpur Plant(Greater Noida)

    This plant was inaugurated by Mr. T.Kazikawa C.E.O & MD Yamaha Global on 6th

    July 2009, which have capacity to produce 6 lakh motorcycles annually including

    Fazer followed by FZ-16, FZ-S, YZF-R15,Ray and other models. The plant capacity

    can be augmented up to 1 million units.

    This fully integrated assembly plant is built on the lines of Yamahas globally tried,

    tested and successfully implemented standards and meets the global quality

    benchmarks. At the core are the 5-S and TPM(Total Productive Maintenance i.e.

    each and every element of production should be accurately and regularly

    maintained)activities that fuel its Manufacturing Processes. The plant has 3 vehicle

    assembly lines and 4 engine assembly lines including one dedicated for export

    engines. The engine and vehicle assembly lines are synchronized and incorporate

    concepts of Unit Assurance i.e. Complete Product Assurance, Parts Assurancethrough 100% kit supply on lines and synchronization of parts storage, supply and

    production. The innovative production processes along with high tech final

    assurance processes are aimed to achieve Zero Claims at the dealers and thus, a

    highly satisfied customer base.

    The recent activity in which IYM,Surajpur plant was much in news was for the

    companys innovative idea of employing an all-women assembly line for theproduction of their scooter Ray.The idea, empowering and employing women,was

    much appreciated worldwide.
