    We confidently move forward, we hold meetings and we carefully

    plan our programs. We always ask the specialists for their opinions. We cre-

    ate plays that tackle the problems in our society. We pay a great attention to the qual-

    ity of our work. We develop our programs, create new partnerships with local and international

    organizations, and we hire experts.

    The new phase of Yes4Youthprogram started with ten young people from different local organi-

    zations that work in the field of culture and childhood. Seventeen drama animators graduated from

    the program. Two of these graduates were chosen to perform in the new production Abu Al Raad

    play. Nine graduates were also chosen to implement nine drama workshops in different areas in

    Hebron.

    As we promised, we will do our best because the Palestinian audience deserves the best. For

    the first time, YT adopted the theatre of the oppressed in creating Abu Al Raad play and it was

    performed forty times for different schools in Hebron. The play was also performed in the Theatre

    of the Oppressed Festival. Currently, the artistic staff of YT is preparing for four Kids4Kidsplays.

    Yes Theatre is here for you and for your children. We want them to reach their ambitions. We want

    them to practise their hobbies and to use their energies whether through participating in our differ-

    ent programs or through watching our plays. Our plays have a message to deliver, they tickle the

    imagination, and they encourage creative thinking.

    Days pass by like a dream. When we are children we just see what is

    innocent and beautiful in life. We naively think that Life is beautiful

    and everything in it is beautiful too. However, when we grow up , we are

    surprised to know that life is not as beautiful as we think. Deception,

    hatred, envy, betrayal, conflict and revenge start to appear. For what?

    Life taught me that I should be mean to prove my point, and I should

    be violent to prove my power. It also taught me that compliments are

    stupidity, kindness is naivety, and good intentions are foolishness. This

    is what life and people taught me That was my friends answer when

    I once asked him Whats wrong? Is life really like that?

    Every time we mess up, we blame life. When we hurt and when we are

    hurt we blame life. When we fail we blame life. Why? What is wrong

    with life? I believe in the saying Life is beautiful. What is Life? Life is

    us.

    I told my friend Search within you maybe you will find out why now

    you are cursing life while few months ago you were loudly singing Life

    is beautiful. I told him search within you for your mistakes. Search in

    your mind and in your heart why now you hate people while you used

    to love them all. Search why your eyes see everything black while they

    used to see everything white and pure. Search why now you cannot

    say nice words anymore. Search why now your hands are rough as

    if they are ready to fight while they were always ready to shake with

    the hands of every friend . Think deeply of ways to change. Make new

    plans for your life ! The new plans will re-charge your soul with love,

    positivity and beauty. They will expand the horizons and they will open

    your eyes to the beautiful life. When you make new plans you will find

    million nice words to say to people. These plans will open the door of

    creativity for you.

    When I was done talking, I looked around and did not see my friend. I

    searched for him for months and asked everyone about him but I did not

    find an answer. Since that day I have not found my friend but whenever

    I pass by his house I hear an angel voice signing Life is beautiful.

    WFD and YES TheatreFrom 11th of April until 18th of April the new WFD director Georg Rohde was visiting

    Palestine and had the chance to meet with the YES Theatre team on 17th of April. In the

    morning he was guest during a presentation of the last YES Theatre play Abu Raad

    at the YES Theatre performance hall and could witness some results of the YES4Youth

    project, in which WFD is cooperating partner with YES Theatre.

    In that play, two female graduates of last years YES4Youth training cycle where among

    the protagonists. Remarkably they are the first actresses from Hebron ever acting on

    stage, which makes the play Abu Raad an even more special event.

    In the afternoon Mr. Rohde was guided through the old city by the YES Theatre board

    president, Mr. Yazid Zahde, who gave him an introduction to the political situation and

    the history of Hebrons old city.

    On 13th of April, YES Theatre was invited to present the Abu Raad play in the framework of a regional conference of

    German international cooperation organizations that was taking place from 12th until the 16th of April in Bethlehem.YES Theatre did impress and surprise the audience with a high standard of acting and the compelling content of the

    play that dealt with possible obstacles young girls have to face in the local society. The audience was that much over-

    whelmed, that the ovations seemed not to end.

    In March 2011 the new training cycle of the YES4Youth program has started with 15 participants, who compromised

    themselves for a period of six months. During that time they are participating in a theater training twice a week, provided

    by the YES Theatre team and will in addition participate in training measures provided by external trainers, as for ex-

    ample in puppet theater and Theater of the Oppressed method.

    Subsequently the participants will participate as assistant directors in the Kids4Kids project and will have the opportu-

    nity to direct parts of theater plays with children themselves. After that, they will have the chance to lead theater trainings

    with school children and some of them will be able to participate maybe as future young actors with YES Theatre in some

    of their plays.

    On 24th of April, the Yes4Youth theater library which is based in the project building, close to the YES Theatre hall,

    opened its doors to public. Since then it is possible to lend out books about theater and fiction in Arabic and English,

    every Saturday.

    WFD will have this cooperation with YES Theatre minimum until July 2012 and in that period a third group of young the-ater multipliers will have the chance to receive a six-months training as theater multipliers.

    After all, WFD is proud to work with YES Theatre, as a partner with high artistic standards and a deep rootedness in

    Hebron society.

    I am happy to see the progress in the education of young theater multipliers, which is an important precondition to spread

    theater as creative means and to gain wide acceptance of theater as a permanent institution in the society and life of

    Hebron.

    Our News In preparation for a new project for the theater; Yes Theater team conduct-

    ed a new research on School Dropouts. YT team visited multiple schools

    and met with teachers, parents and students in search for reasons behind

    the school dropout phenomenon. The Yes Theater team also put together

    an extended workshop in Al Fawar Elementary Boys School which was

    led by Mr. Ahmed Al-Amsy, the school principal. It is worth mentioning that

    twentyfi

    ve teachers and parents attended the workshop. Mr. Al Amsy dis-cussed the reasons behind the school dropout phenomenon and its impact

    on children.

    On January 1st, Yes Theater hosted Goethes institute play Hikikomori. The play shed the light on the psychological and social

    problems that face the youth when returning from abroad.

    On January 17th, Yes Theater put together a seven day workshop which was supervised by the specialist Nidal Al-khateb. The

    purpose of the workshop was to teach the participants the basic techniques of making puppets from materials available in the en-

    vironment. Yes 4Youth graduates year 2010, were among the participants in the workshop.

    On January 24th, the public relations officer Ihab Zhada, participated in the preliminary meeting of Amar ya beladi Campaign at the

    Old City Rehabilitation Committee Centre.

    On February 3rd , Yes Theater in cooperation with Terre Des Hommes and with the participation of a group of young children hosted

    a workshop entitled Non Fiction Dance. The final outcome of the five days workshop was a theatrical performance attended by an

    audience of children and parents.

    On February 2nd, Yes Theater hosted the stand-up comedian Iman Zayed who conducted a workshop with the artistic staff. Ms.

    Zayed introduced the stand-up comedy to the participants and she and the staff shared their experiences and discussed the pos-

    sibilities of any future cooperation.

    YT technician Hammam Amro had a training in the sound and light systems as a capacity building program with the British Council

    in Jordan from February 13th to February 16th ,2011.

    On February 14th ,YT started with the second phase of Y4Y program . Ten trainees joined the program from different areas in Hebron

    and the program will be run till the mid of August 2011.

    On February 16th the project coordinator in War child visited YT to be introduced to the staff and the work process in the theatre.

    TIPH financially supported twenty performances of Abu Al Raad play on February, 16th. The agreement was to perform for all the

    schools in the southern areas (H2) of Hebron city.

    Al Alam radio station in Hebron and Ajyal in Ramallah hosted

    YT media spokesman Raed Shyoukhi to discuss the latest ac-

    tivities of Yes Theatre on January 1st and February 2nd ,2011.

    The play One Small Step was performed for ten schools in

    Hebron. The play which was supported by the British, talked

    about the Humans story when landed on the moon in a beau-

    tiful dramatic style. The performances ended in March 2011.

    A representative of War Child (Holland) visited Yes Theatre on

    February 23rd,2011 to be introduced to YT artistic and admin-

    istrative staff and the work process in the theatre.

    By the end of March, nine of YT trainers (Yes4Youth gradu-

    ates 2010) conducted nine drama workshops in different areas

    in Hebron. The final outcome of each workshop was a perfor-

    mance which was attended by the families of the participants,

    their teachers and their colleagues.

    On April, YT performed Abu Al Raad play for different univer-

    sities and theatres in different cities in Palestine. It was per-

    formed for both Al Quds and Hebron universities, Ashtar the-

    atre- Ramallah, and for Dar Al Nadwa- Bethlehem. The closing

    performance was on YT stage in Hebron.

    When it comes to the social news of YT, the colleague Raed

    Shyoukhi had a daughter Zena on March 30th, and the

    administrative manager Mohammad Issa had his first born (a

    boy) Hasan on April 20th .

    YT had extended meetings with ActionAid (Denmark) on April

    3rd and another one on April 20th . The purpose of the meet-

    ings was to discuss the possible partnership between YT and

    the Contact Theatre in Denmark. It was agreed to have a rep-

    resentative from the Danish theatre on June 2011 to study the

    possibility of developing a two years joint project between the

    two organizations.

    The monitoring and evaluation officer in War Child(Holland)

    visited YT on April 26th to check the reporting system in the

    theatre.

    The administrative manager Mohammad Issa participated in

    an information workshop conducted by the EU about the cul-

    tural programs for the current year. The workshop was on April

    27th in Bethlehem.

    YT finished its play tour which included forty performances of

    Abu Al Raad play on May 11th . The tour covered forty schools

    and it was under Play4Kidsprogram which is annually imple-mented by YT. This year and for the first time the theatre ad-

    opted the theatre of the oppressed in performing the play.

    YT performed the Gaza Monologues twice for the public, one

    on April 16th and the other on the 23rd . The play was under

    Kids4Kidsprogram which is annually implemented with differ-

    ent school students in Hebron . A play is produced and then

    performed under a play tour for school students who have the

    same age as the participants. The Monologues were written

    by Gaza children who experienced the war . It is worth men-

    tioning that this production was part of a big project initiated

    by Ashtar theatre/ Ramallah and all the monologues were per-formed at the same time in more than fifty countries around

    the world in the Mid of October 2010.

    YT chairman Mr.Yazid Zahda and the artist Raed Shyoukhi

    represented YT in the fourth conference of War Childs part-

    ners in the Middle East. In the conference the participants

    shared their work experiences and War Child carried out

    workshops in different artistic and administrative subjects.

    YT is currently working on 3 plays under kids4kids project for

    this summer vacation 2011.

    The programs manager at Welfare Association Mr. Ammar

    Dweik visited Yes Theatre on April 26th, 2011. In this visit, the

    administrative manager Mr. Mohammad Issa discussed the

    possibility of building a theatre hall for YT. Mr. Issa provided

    the Welfare Association with a blueprint of the hall in his visit

    to the association on May 4th, 2011.

    On May 3rd,2011 The manager of YT had a meeting with the

    representative of Diakonia Ms. Safa Abu Asabeh to discuss

    the possibility of having a future cooperation between the two

    organizations.

    The Swedish director Jonathan Kolf visited the theatre on Jan-

    uary 15th, 2011 to discuss the possibility of having a future

    cooperation.

    A delegate from TIPH visited the theatre on May 17th, 2011 to

    be introduced to the theatre programs and to discuss the pos-

    sibility of a future cooperation.

    A logical framework was developed by the theatre and Action-

    Aid (Denmark) through various meetings between May 17th

    and May 25th ,2011. The framework included many ideas to be

    implemented by the theatre.

    A delegate from Flag project visited the theatre on June 12th

    ,2011 to discuss the possibility of implementing a summer

    camp on Heath Education through Drama and Theatre.

    A video conference with ActionAid( Denmark) partners was

    held on June 19th ,2011 to discuss the future projects of thisorganization. The partners who participated in the confer-

    ence were: The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Human

    Rights, Sharek Forum, Yes Theatre, and Pyalara.

    The administrative assistant of Yes Theatre participated in the

    TOT training which was carried out by ActionAid Denmark

    in Jordan. The aim of this training was to develop the skills of

    the youth to create a change in their societies and it took place

    between July 7th and July 27th, 2011.

    On July 11th, the administrative manager of Yes Theatre par-

    ticipated in the workshop held by WCH (Holland) in Ramal-

    lah. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the project ofChild Rights Situation Analysis

    A delegate from the Japanese embassy visited the theatre on

    July 19th ,2011 to coordinate the show of the puppeteer Jo

    Taira.

    An Idea

    Strong blows drive me out of the circle. My bravery fails me so I cannot resist them. I open my eyes to the truth which is

    always hidden behind implicit compliments. The weapons I use to face the pain are few. They have a slow impact. The

    mind becomes numb because of the consecutive strikes. I became irresponsive to the danger alerts around me

    We are very good in combining words and polishing them. We are very creative in the science of language and we are

    able to shape the reality in the way we want even if on papers. Our life is like a piece of paper with which the wind plays.

    We are very traditional in our thoughts. We have closed minds. Our souls are burdened with superstitions. We talk a lot

    and do nothing. We are always cursing. It is the truth

    No, it is the bitterness we drink everyday. We keep it under our skin, in the water of our eyes, and in the cavities of our

    minds. We resist the desire of vomiting this bitterness because we got used to it same as we got used to our defeats.

    The painters, the writers, the poets, the musicians and the sculptors have these crazy moments because they are in

    the midst of searching for the truth . They realize that what they gave to the world was fake. They realize that what the

    humans accomplished did not contribute in making them comfortable. Every individual looks at any issue from his pointof view. However, there is still one point of view that is right. The truth is held in what these drew in their paintings and

    composed in their music pieces and poetry. When the truth got lost between a critic and a philosopher they found their

    comfort in destroying the truth with their hands. This is much better than being destroyed with the hands of these who do

    not know anything. No one can feel the pain expect these who have it.

    When you are honest to yourself you do not use rhymes. When you talk about yourself you do not use grammar and you

    do not compliment yourself. Everyone knows his value and potentials. However, the biggest problem is when you think

    you are something but you are nothing except a mirage in the horizon.

    The philosophy is the controversial relationship between the human and his self. It has an intimate relationship with the

    language. They are both a talk. If you look at it, you will find it empty and meaningless despite the richness of its vo-

    cabularyexactly like a sparkling jewelry which is admired by all but in reality it is only a cheap metalUsing philosophy

    without wisdom is in vain.

    Several workshops on the Organizational Behavior were carried out in the theatre. The workshops were planned to start on July 20th,

    2011 and to end in December, 2011.

    A group of trainers from the British organization Free2be visited the theatre to carry out a training in drama for Y4Y trainees. The

    training took place from September 24th to September 26th,2011.

    The artistic team of the French Company Nadja visited Yes Theatre to implement a joint project between the two organizations. The

    visit took place from September 26th to October 30th, 2011.

    The manager of Yes Theatre attended the meeting held by Sida on October 10th, 2011. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss

    the three years grant.

    Three puppet shows for the Japanese puppeteer Jo Taira were performed for some schools in Hebron and for the public on October

    15th, 2011. In addition, a workshop on puppet making was carried out on the same day with Y4Y trainees.

    The administrative assistant of YT participated in MeYouMe Meeting that took place from October 27th to October 31st, 2011.

    Yes Theatre participated in the Solidarity with Palestine ceremony that was held in Paris from October 28th to October 29th, 2011.

    Yes Theatre participated in a planning workshop with ActionAid(Denmark) from November 1st ,2011 to November 2nd , 2011. The

    purpose of the workshop was to develop a joint project between the two organizations on cultural education.

    Mr. Raed Shyoukhi participated in the Training of Trainer ToT that was carried out by ActionAid(Denmark) in Jordan from October

    2nd to October 13th ,2011. The purpose of the training was to develop the skills of the participants in different subjects including

    group management, storytelling, acting etc.

    Mr. Raed Shyoukhi participated in the Civic Education and Democracy Conference that took place in Alexandria from October 29th

    to November 2nd , 2011. The conference was held by the Swedish organization AnnaLindh . Many organizations from more than

    twenty Mediterranean countries attended the conference to set the principles of democracy and civic education in these countries.

    Yes Theatre participated in the Planning and Proposal Workshop that was carried out by WarChild (Holland) from November 16th

    to November 18th, 2011.

    The artistic staff of YT and two girls from Kids4Kids participated in the cultural exchange program arranged by Nadja Company from

    November 1st to November 18th, 2011. They presented a number of performances and participated in many workshops on theatre

    and children, and theatre and youth.

    I Will Never Stop Going

    to the TheatreThe Place I

    Adore

    I love theatre. It was my dream to be on its stage. My dream

    came true after one year of my participation in YT. I partici-

    pated in Yes4Youth program and then I had my chance to

    act in YT recent play Abu Al Raad. This play was the first

    to be performed in the theatre of the oppressed style and I

    played the role of Sarah , the heroine .

    I and my colleagues Bushra Al Atrash and Nagham Al Shar-

    if, were the first actresses to perform on YT stage in Hebron

    . A great challenge to the reality as we unfortunately stillhave many worn out traditions. I believe in women rights

    and the ability of women to work in all the fields with the

    condition of sticking to the right manners. I encourage each

    girl to work in the field she wants whether arts, engineering,

    media , medicine etc. If she wants to be an actress, she

    should go ahead. We at the theatre try to deliver a mean-

    ingful message to the society.

    The credit goes to my parents for supporting me. They en-

    couraged me to choose the best for myself. This motivated

    me to continue with what I started and I am very proud of

    them and they are proud of me as well. Through my ex-

    perience in YT I proved that I am able to manage between

    studying (I am majoring in graphics) and acting. I will al-

    ways search for ways to develop my potentials in both of

    them.

    I say thanks for YT, Thanks for my teachers (Mohammad,

    Read and Ihab) I respect you all and I am proud to be withyou forever and always. I will smell this great fragrance

    whenever I mention your name and you will always be the

    oil in the lantern that illuminates the road of my ambitions

    and success. You will always be the door for my dreams

    which opens up to the sky of your fame and professional-

    ism.

    An age of craziness running two ages of sleep are won-

    They stay up at a night drawn in the eyes of these who are

    asleepthey are waiting for a nap that will last for years

    cal looks runThey draw more questions without being shy When are

    our yawning bodies going to lie down in the laps of the

    afternoon?

    When are they going to untie the burdens on their backs

    and give them to a back that does not know how to bend?

    These are incomplete questionsand that is an endless

    answer

    Miles Starts with a Step

    The Journey of a Thousand Miles Starts with a Step

    We always hear this sentence in different situations and

    placesI believe in this sentence because it holds a lot of

    meaning. I realized what it truly means when I had my first

    acting experience in YT. My heart beats raced quickly in

    my chest until I felt that it would leave its place. I did not

    know why.Was it the fear of this new experience? Or the

    fear of failure?or was it a normal human feeling when try-

    ing out something new? With every heart beat there was the

    question Can you do it?..I felt I was going crazy because I

    asked this question to myself every now and then. You may

    be surprised to hear that this question created a challenge

    for me. The challenge that made me loudly scream Yes I

    canyes I can.

    The rehearsals for the play started with a team that has a

    special place in my heart. For me, this team is not only a

    team of great actors but also of three brothers. I loved their

    relationship with each other as I spent almost a year with

    them when I participated in Yes4Youth 2010. Then I became

    an assistant for the director Mohammad Titi in Kids4Kids

    program. After that, I reached my first acting experience.

    At the beginning of the rehearsals I had many mixed feel-

    ings: fear, sadness, happiness especially that I was playing

    a challenging role. I played the role of a bossy mean step-

    mother. This role made me tired and I was going to quit but

    my three brothers supported me and taught me that theatre

    has a message that needs to be delivered through my role.

    There are three names that I will never forget as long as I

    am alive..Mohammad Titi, Ihab Zahda, and Raed Shyoukhi.

    Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me to take

    this first step in the thousand miles journey..but the question

    nowWould this step be followed with other steps??

    The Cats Heart

    I will tell you the story of my friend (Ivon). It is very similar to the sto-

    ries we read ..My name is Tolen but my friend Ivon used to call me the

    ( Cats armor) because she used to imagine that I am the armor which

    protects her all the time. I too had a nickname for her. I used to call

    her (Cats heart) because she loved cats and she felt comfortable to

    see their warm kind colors. I and (Cats heart) were a team that helped

    the cats.

    One day I went to Cat hearts house and I saw her sad. She was look-

    ing at the sky when she said with a sad sigh God, how am I going to

    leave this life? My heart started beating quickly and I walked towards

    her to ask her what she meant. She said: No, No I mean nothing I was

    just talking to myself. Since that day I am afraid of the moment in

    which (Cats heart) will leave me.I cried each time I remembered her

    words. I could not imagine how I am going to do everything all by my-self..To whom am I going to tell my secrets after she is gone? But..No..

    I will not give up and I will do my best to protect her..She plays with me

    and tells me all her secrets..I promise you (Cats heart) I will help you

    and make you happy in your last days ..I will never let you forget me.

    After a week, I took (Cats heart) on some short walks to make her feel

    better. One day she met a new friend (Raphel). Raphel was the most

    handsome boy in the city. We used to notice that he looked sad when

    he watched us play together. I asked him why he looked sad and he

    said I had a brother who was more handsome than me and we used

    to play, have fun, cry, and sing together . I asked him Where is your

    brother now Raphel? He replied He died. When I asked him how..He

    said when he was nine years old we found out that he had a deadly

    disease, and after a year our house burnt down and he was caught

    inside the house. I went to rescue him and we were surrounded by

    fire so we were forced to jump out of the window. He jumped first and

    fell on his back and died..Since then I remember him with grief. I can-

    not forget him, and I hope that I will follow him to paradise. When he

    Have You Ever Heard This Story?

    It is 7:00 pm now. The blonde girl with her light skin, hazel eyes and pink dress is sitting on a purple chair on the table that is beside

    the window. She looks at the street, she waits, she leans her head, and then

    she sighs. This is the third time I go to this caf at this time to see her with the

    same clothes at the same spot sipping coffee with one hand and holding a

    tea spoon with the other. I assumed she comes alone to replay the memories

    of her sad love story, or to remember the sweet moments she spent with herunfaithful husband or her lost friend at this place. But, I did not notice any

    passion or sadness in her eyes. On the contrary, I was curious about her eyes

    which were full of pity.

    I decided to leave the caf and come back the next day and I did. I found her

    sitting at the same spot, at the same table, and on the same chair as if she has

    not left the place since yesterday. But..No..wait..One thing changed..She is

    smiling..Yes, she looks out to the street and smiles. I was very curious about

    her so I sat on the table that is opposite hers and I started looking to what she

    was looking at. I saw a cat playing with her kittens. At that moment I knew the

    reason behind her sad smile.. I was confused..I was not brave enough to ask

    her what is it with the cat and the kittensI could not ask her about the reason behind her magical sad smile..So I paid the cheque

    and rushed outside the door.

    I heard footsteps behind me, I looked back and I found the same girl following me. I was surprised. She looked at me smiling and

    said: Before my grandfather died he told me to change my bad habit of watching people and to watch the cats with their kittens

    instead..Each day I discover that he was right, so I smile and cry at the same time

    The Grave of LifeHow hard is the life we liveIt takes from us the ones we love and it always stands against our hopesI want to tell a story that I will

    never forget as long as I am alive...It is the story of a lost girl..She does not have anyone to hug after she lost the dearest person to

    her heart..Her mother..she lived her indescribable nights and ran screaming in this life with the hope of finding the safe lapat the

    end she found out that life is only lines of sadness, tears and conflict with destiny.

    She was scared; she cried and hid her pain in her heart. No one felt her pain and no one answered her rescue calls so she decided

    to commit suicide. Maybe by doing so she will meet the dearest person to her heart her mother.. But she realized that suicide is

    a weakness and a surrender..So she decided to face the challenge of her painful reality..She struggled and worked on changing

    her reality to the better..She realized that life is very beautiful and it is worth living if we face the pains it has and change it into

    happiness.

    The Pulse of Life

    The place got very dark and it was very hard to see I could not speak to you and tell you what I hold in my heart for you because

    you are the closet to me..Sometimes I call you the medicine of pain..and at others I call you the ink of my artery..However, today

    I call you The Pulse of Life..Do you know why? Because I can tell you whatever is going on in my heart without any hesitation.

    Sometimes the human does not realize what he is saying or what he is doing..He starts to mumble words that appears to be empty

    but holds his mystery.. He works on defining a goal for his life through which he can reach the world of happiness in front of others..

    Some people insist that everyone should open his life files just to remember what is inside them even if he does not like to.

    Why do some people insist to share our life with us? Why do we search deep down within us for the sadness and not for the hap-

    piness? Why? The beautiful moments pass too quickly..How beautiful it is to look at all the blessings God gave us and realize how

    merciful he is.. We should be sure that hope does not die and that we are the ones who create life.

    Yes Theatre and I

    First of all, I would like to thank everyone that contributed in implementing Yes4Youth program. When I started I had

    some difficulties but because I love it I decided to overcome all the obstacles to reach my goal. When I came to Yes

    Theatre and since day one in Yes4Youth program I loved everything related to the theatre: the colleagues, the staff and

    the plays. I impatiently wait for the day of the workshop because I find my happiness in the theatre. It is the place where

    I am comfortable and where I freely express myself. I loved the theatre since I was a child. Because it is my friend ,my

    rescuer and my guide, I hope to be successful in the field of theatre. I say thanks to Yes Theatre staff that allowed me

    to join this program

    I am honored to say that my experience with Yes Theatre is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever been

    through. It had its own stamp and taste..Through this experience I was introduced to many drama works. I have always

    wanted to get familiar with the nature of drama and the theatre. This experience motivated me to expand my horizons

    because the nature of my work requires continuous changes when dealing with children. I should try to keep the energy

    and the creativity which has the greatest effects on the childrens psyche. This contributes in creating a strong genera-

    tion which has the confidence to stand in front of an audience without any fear or hesitation. Therefore, I say thanks to

    Yes Theatre for all they have done for us, for their support and efforts to make this program successful.

    On stage all your ideas and ambitions are expressed. Also, on stage you can tackle the problems which the theatre of

    life could not find any solutions for. It was an amazing experience through which I was able to express myself and to

    deliver a meaningful message to the society. It was the first time for me to perform professionally on stage in front of an

    audience of the public and the students.

    Through theatre you can comprehensively tackle the problems in the society. I really found myself in the theare. There-

    fore, I would like to advise everyone who has passion for acting to go for it i f they can, because it has a sacred message.

    I was honored to be one of the three girls who for the first time acted on YTs stage in Hebron. I hope to continue in what

    I started and to deliver as many messages as I can.

    The Figure of this Issue

    Dear Reader,

    In this issue we shed the light on a figure that had the greatest impact on the modern

    theatrical art. The figure is the founder of the Theatre of the Oppressed, the Brazilian

    Augusto Boal.

    Boal was born in ( Rio de Janeiro ). As an undergraduate, Boal got a degree in ChemicalEngineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He took an interest in theatre

    at an early age, preparing skits for family members along with his three brothers, but he

    did not become involved in the theatre scene until after completing his masters degree.

    After graduating from the UFRJ, Boal went to New York, where he studied at the School of

    Dramatic Arts at Columbia University while also pursuing his masters degree in Chemical

    Engineering. Among Boals theatre professors was John Gassner, who had also taught

    Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller. In 1956, shortly after graduating, Boal was asked

    to work with the Arena Theatre in So Paulo, southeast Brazil. Boal was in charge of directing plays along with other dramaturgs

    such as Jose Renato, who was also the founder of the Arena Theatre. It was here that he began to experiment with new forms of

    theatre never before seen in Brazil, such as Stanislavskis system for actors.

    While working at the Arena Theatre in So Paulo, Boal directed a number of classical dramas, which he transformed to make them

    more pertinent to Brazilian society and its economy. Among these plays was John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men, known in Brazil

    as Ratos e Homens. This was Boals first performance as a director at the Arena Theatre of So Paulo. Boals teachings were

    controversial, and as a cultural activist he was seen as a threat by the Brazilian military regime. In 1971, Boal was kidnapped off

    the street, arrested, tortured, and eventually exiled to Argentina, where he stayed for 5 years. During those 5 years, Boal published

    two books: Torquemada (1971) and his much acclaimed Theatre of the Oppressed (1973).

    After the fall of the military dictatorship, Boal returned to Brazil after 15 years of exile in 1986. He established a major Center for

    the Theatre of the Oppressed in Rio de Janeiro(CTO Rio), whose objective was to study, discuss and express issues concerning

    citizenship, culture and various forms of oppression using theatrical language. Boals work in the CTO made way for the approval

    of a new law that protects crime victims and witnesses in Brazil. Boals group has worked next to numerous organizations that

    fight for human rights.

    Augusto Boal died 2 May 2009 at age 78 in Rio de Janeiro. He died of respiratory failure after a long battle against leukemia. Critic

    Yan Michalski argues that Augusto Boal is the best-known and most respected Brazilian theatre practitioner abroad. Some of his

    published works are: Theatre of the Oppressed, Games for Actors and Non-actors, and the Rainbow of Desire.

    Memories from Our Beginning

    I still remember clearly the first day we got our light equipment. We were doing some

    theatre exercises in YT. On that day, a truck carrying 18 boxes full of technical tools

    reached the theatre. We bought a lighting device of 16 amps with a remote control.

    All the equipment in addition to what we collected and made ourselves has become

    part of an advanced lighting system. For the first time in years we do not need to borrow

    equipment for our tours anymore. We now have our own equipment.

    I hope that each group of actors which believes in theatre and its development to ex-

    perience a day like the one we had.
