Hello all, I hope you are all safe and well. Well done to all of you who have been keeping up to date with the work being set by your teachers. It is really important that the longer you are off school, the more you focus on your work. You should be doing school work every day, from Monday to Friday, and it is vital that you stick to a routine. This might be: getting a bit of exercise in early and starting your school work afterwards; working straight after breakfast and then again after lunch; or you might have a block of time in the afternoon/evening when you do your work every day. Whichever routine works best for you and your family – stick to it! The more work you complete now, the better it will be for your education and for when you return to school. Please make sure that you are keeping all of the paper based work that you are completing, in a portfolio. Also, if possible, save any online work into your area in Pupil Resources. 1. Provide a brief description of each of the different features of the trench system: Communications trench Artillery emplacements Dugouts Support trench Front-line trench Reserve trench No-man’s land

2. Read the information about problems with transport and communications and answer the following questions: Why was the terrain of the British Sector of the Western Front something that caused problems for

transport and communication? Why were wounds highly likely to be infected with bacteria in the area in which key battles were

fought? What dangers did stretcher bearers face whilst doing their job? (think independently – the answer to

this is not in the text) Out of all of the methods used to move soldiers away from the battlefield (ambulances [horse-drawn and motor], trains, barges and ships), which do you think would have been the most effective for transporting severely wounded soldiers? Explain your answer.

3. Read the source from Edward Munro’s Diaries of a Stretcher Bearer: You are going to make a judgement about how useful this source is for somebody that wants to find out what it was like to work as a stretcher bearer on the Western Front. Explain why the following facts about the source mean that it is either a useful or useless source:

It is a first-hand account from a stretcher bearer that worked on the Western Front. It is an account from one stretcher bearer that worked on the Western Front. The source is an extract from Edward Munro’s diary. The source contains details about what Munro did during the war. The source describes one event that Munro experienced. Read the two slides that give information about injuries and illnesses faced by British soldiers on the

Western Front. At the end of your Major Battles PowerPoint that you did last time, make a slide that explains the major medical problems and possible injuries that solders faced in the trenches that are referred to in these slides. Then note down the solutions used to solve these problems alongside them.

Performing Arts

Year 9 performing arts You are to continue with component 1 to the best of your ability. If component 1 is complete, you are to create a power point presentation on Bertolt Brecht He is German playwright/theatre practitioner. Bertolt Brecht's ideas are very influential. He wanted to make the audience think, and used a range of devices to remind them that they were watching theatre and not real life. I would like you, through extensive research to show,

• Who is he • What is his background? • What does he do? • Why is he important to the performing arts industry? • What are his methods? • Do you think we could use his techniques in class? • Who inspired him?

Don’t forget, your findings are to be presented in a power point format. To keep it interesting think about using images, colour, maybe even add video clips. • Information Technology

• All teaching PowerPoints for A and the answer booklet for self-assessment are in the school closure phase

2 folder – year 10- IT, to help deepen knowledge of A. • (Email Mr Gallagher if you can’t access the answer booklet)
