Introduction to Unit 2: Thermal Energy, Temperature, and Heat

Today:

1) Homework due next class (write in homework notebook)

2) Review states of matter/Kinetic Particle Theory

3) Introduce Energy

Page 4: Y7 Week 31 introduction to Energy

Energy• is what moves matter.

• Remember: Matter is a solid, liquid, gas.

• Can you draw a diagram of the particles in 3 states of matter?

Solid Liquid Gas

Page 5: Y7 Week 31 introduction to Energy

All particles MOVE

• Solid, liquid, and gas particles are ALWAYS MOVING.

• They have KINETIC ENERGY.

• Kinetic Energy is energy of motion.

Page 6: Y7 Week 31 introduction to Energy

Energy allows particles to change state

Give an example of ENERGY:

• Kinetic• Thermal• Wind

Activity

• You will need: a partner a pen a piece of paper

You will hand in the paper at the end of the activity.

Project: Build a Solar Cooker• Pg. 131 in your textbook

• Please make a group of 3 or 4 students from this class.

Homework due next class:1) Research ‘how to’ build a solar cooker online* on

Edmodo under “Folders”. Print the instructions.2) With your group, bring your materials and

instructions to school.*Keep it simple.

Page 12: Y7 Week 31 introduction to Energy

Solar Cooker Project1. Research and build a solar cooker with your group.

2. Test your solar cooker. (Take photos and a video)Can it: boil water? Can it: fry an egg? Can it: ___________ (your group choice)

3. Write a report using your own words. Answer the following:a) Explain how a solar cooker works.b) What type of heat transfer does a solar cooker demonstrate? c) What are the advantages (pros) of using a solar cooker?d) What are the disadvantages (cons) of using a solar cooker?e) Which places around the world use solar cookers? Why ?Pg. 122- 133 in Matter and Energy textbook may have answers.
