(a) Propellant Sampling Procedur e
In an effort to dispell any confusion regarding the
implementationof particulate sampling of propellants in support of
the LEM program,a meeting was held on 19 February 1964. Those in
attendance wereJ, Hary and L. Rankin representing group 596-165 and
the Bravo Area,R. Penton representing Section°596-162 and J . Blake
representingD/554+945 , nspection .
The following division of responsibility was agreed upon :
SECTION 5960162
(1) Designate the appropriate procedure (attached) for
samplingfor particulate contamination of PTO and Mydyne`in the
above
area.
(2) Provide a list of the required sampling equipment .
.Provide a trained man to instruct the operating grouppersonnel
in the techniques necessary to obtain representativesamples -or
(4) Provide inter-departmental coordination on the first
seriesof Samples.
GROUP 596.4 65
(3)
(1) Take the sample per Section 162 instructions .
(2) Pill out the appropriate section of the propellant
contaminationaa.aai sis (P,C .A.) card provided by quality Control
.
(3) Arrange for transporting the sample to the appropriate
"whiteroom" for analysis .

Provide the properly cleaned sampling equipment as designated
bySection '162;
Analyze the sample per the particle count section of
Rocketdynespecification RAO 615",003* Counting particles smaller
than 10microns .will not be required and no maximum level of
cleanlinesswill be required .
Complete the PCA card and forward results to Supervisor, Test

SMPLING (D/596-165)Dove the cap from the sample part. Flush
exterior surfacesof the port with the appropriate reagent, i .e .
free TF for INTOand NAA alcohol for Myclyne .
2 . Open the sample valve and flow 500 HL of the propellant to
waste .
3. V:'Ithout touching the sa=le valve , insert the precleaned
5O0 MLbeaker into the flowing propellant stream .
When exactly 100 )4L has been collected, remove the beaker

the flowing propellant stream and i.amsediately cover beaker
witha precleaned petri dish.
Close the sample valve .
Carry the covered beaker to the processing point . (An area
asclose as possible ,, but not aver 50 feet from the sample point
.The water aspirator is located in this area. )
NOTE : A man in protective clothing should precede the man
withthe sample t V not care than ten feet to assure a
clearpath.
PROCESSING (D/596-a65)
.41 Pour the contents of the beaker into the funnel .
Immediatelycover the funnel with a petri dish and pull the entire
samplethrough the analytical filter by using the separator .
TRlL,VaZ Na (D/596465 )
While maintaining the still covered funnel apparatus in an
uprightcondition, transport the it to a Q.C. operated White Roma
forprocessing,
MIALYSIS (D/5514-9145)
1 . In the White Roam rinse the walls of the funnel with 25 ML
ofthe appropriate clean -rveagent for the propellant.
2. Process and count the filter disc per Rocketdgne
SpecificationR O6s5-ao3 .
Record and report all data to the requesting personnel and send
acopy to Section 596-162*
