Prelude - Freedom Highway The Resizters

Lift Every Voice and Sing is the Black National Anthem. Let us sing in solidarity with our African-American siblings.

Opening Song - Lift Every Voice and Sing JohnsonLift ev’ry voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring,Ring with the harmonies of liberty;Let our rejoicing rise high as the list’ning skies,Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;Thou who has by thy might, led us into the light,Keep us forever in the path, we pray.Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee,Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee; Shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.

Kyrie

In the beginning, God brought cosmos out of chaos and spoke humanity into being with the words: “Let there be…!”

God, give us power to speak the words that will bring positive possibilities of a new creation into existence.

And after God spoke the universe and humanity into existence, God spoke again and said: “It is good! It is very good!”

Page 2: Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx · Web viewBy this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:35. Prelude - Freedom HighwayThe Resizters.

God, give us power to speak words that will celebrate and affirm the wondrous virtue of Your human and cosmic creation.

And in the fullness of time, God spoke again. This time, the Word of God became flesh and the living Logos made a tabernacle among us.

God, give us power to speak words that will abide in the hearts and minds of all people, words that will call each of us into Your marvelous love.

We recall the prophetic words of your servant Martin: “Although the Church has been called to combat social evils, it has often remained silent behind the anesthetizing security of stained-glass windows. How often the Church has been an echo rather than a voice, a tail-light behind the Supreme Court and other secular agencies, rather than a headlight guiding women and men progressively and decisively to higher levels of understanding.“

God, we confess our silence in the face of injustice. Forgive us, and give us the power to speak words that will challenge the systems of injustice represented in the powers of this world.

Opening Prayer (written by Rev. Eliza Buchakjian-Tweedy, adapted from “Our God is Marching On!” by MLK)

God of Righteousness, grant us Your life-giving presence. Guide us in our time of worship and remain with us when we step out into the world, that we may face injustice with courage and love.

May we come to see that the end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience.

The timing may feel off; the end of the road might be out of sight, yet we trust in Your holy presence… because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. Amen.

Offertory Song – For Just One Day BeckhamFor just one day may we have peace? May anger sleep, may fighting cease? May those in bondage know release for just one day, one just day?

One just day: A day of rest to let the whole world catch its breath To search our souls each in our own way, for just one day, one just day.

For just one day, no weapon used, no one coerced, no one abused, No one by hate or anger bruised for just one day, one just day.

One just day: No anguished tears, a pause from pain, a rest from fears, No hand or voice in anger raised, for just one day, one just day.

For just one day, no stubborn pride; All wounded honor set aside, No one pursued or forced to hide for just one day, one just day.

For just one day, let no one cheat, no threat, no guile, no mean deceit; A peaceful trust for all who meet, for just one day, one just day.

One just day: A day of rest to let the whole world catch its breath To search our souls each in our own way, for just one day, one just day.

One just day, no spin, no skew, when every word we hear is true.

And if somehow we see this through, for just one day, one just day; One Just Day….can we do two?

Preparation of the Bread and Wine

Blessed are you, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life, sustaining us in our hunger.Blessed be God forever.

Blessed are you, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink, sustaining us in our thirst.Blessed be God forever.

Friends, pray that sharing this bread and wine will awaken our minds and hearts to the freedom we receive through the Spirit of God. Transform us, O God, we pray.

Prayer Over the Gifts

God dwells in you. And also in you.

Come to the table with thankful hearts. We open our hearts to God and to one another.

PresiderCreator God, Creator Spirit, Creator beyond all imagining, we give You thanks for the gift of reflective awareness that enables us to recognize Your presence in our universe. We recognize that You express Yourself in all creation and in human life. Through us, You sing and dance, speak and write, love and create. In this we never cease to hope, and for this we always thank and praise You. We join with the saints of all times and places as we praise You in Your glory:

Sanctus [Sung] Mass of St. Ann - Bolduc

Voice 1Conscious that we live and move and have our being in You, we give thanks for those throughout history who have affirmed Your loving presence and challenged Your people to give witness. We give thanks for those who witnessed to Your presence in lives characterized by love, mercy, compassion, generosity and forgiveness.

Voice 2We thank You for Jesus, who loved greatly, taught clearly, and proclaimed Your gospel courageously. He set people free from images, ideas and religious practices that bound them in fear and a false sense of separation from You. In Jesus, we see Your Spirit challenging us to make Your presence on earth more visible.

[Please extend your hand, palm up, toward the bread and wine.]

Presider Steadfast One, we recognize Your Spirit alive and at work in this bread and wine, and in us. We open ourselves to Your Spirit who sanctifies and transforms these gifts to become You in us, the body and blood of Christ, as we now fulfill your command of love. We remember that…

All: …on the night before Jesus died, while at supper with his friends, he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to them saying: “Take this, all of you and eat. This is my body. Do this in memory of me.”

[Pause]

In the same way, Jesus took the cup filled with wine. He said the blessing, gave the cup to his friends, and said, “Take this all of you and drink. This is my life blood. Do this in memory of me.”

Presider: Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith:

Voice 3We embrace the possibility of reconciliation, justice, and peace. Take away all that divides us and enable us to be accepting of all. Keep us in communion with one another and with all people who love You throughout the world. Let Your Spirit make us a sign of unity, a model of equality, and instruments of Your peace.

Voice 4Let Your spirit come upon our leaders, both religious and political, that they might act without fear. Move them to become peacemakers, to transform Your church, and to protect Your world. Move them to bring justice to all.

Voice 5You have gathered us around this table in friendship with Martin and all the saints. Strengthen and console all who are suffering in any way. Bless those who have gone before us into the fullness of life.

PresiderGather together people of every gender, race, language, religion and way of life to share in your one, eternal banquet. Then we shall give You glory with all creation and with Jesus through whom Your goodness flows.

Great Amen

Through Christ, may all creation unfold; With Christ, may all creation be one;In Christ, may all divisions be healed; We offer our prayer of praise, this day and forever.

[Sung] Gospel

A-men, A-men, A-men, Amen, Amen. x2

The Sign of Peace

God’s peace be with you today and all days. And also with you. Let us offer each other a sign of peace.

Lamb of God

Presider

We are the body of Christ, called to serve God in creation and one another.

We are happy and blessed to share in this service.

Communion Song – Let Justice Roll Like a River Haugen

Let justice roll like a river, and wash all oppression away;Come, O God, and take us, move and shake us,Come now, and make us anew, that we might live justly like you.

Take from me your holy feasts, all your off’rings and your music;Let justice flow like waters, and integrity like an ever-flowing stream. R

How long shall we wait, O God, for the day of your mercy to dawn,The day we beat our swords into ploughs, when your peace reigns over the earth? R

Page 6: Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx · Web viewBy this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:35. Prelude - Freedom HighwayThe Resizters.

Hear this, all of you who use others in your thirst of power and riches: Our God will turn your laughter to tears, on the wondrous Day of our God. R

Even now return to me, let your hearts be broken and humble,For I am gracious, gen’rous and kind; come and seek the mercies of God. R

You have been told the way of life, the way of justice and peace; To act justly, to love gently, and walk humbly with God. R

Prayer after Communion

Closing Blessing & Sending Forth (adapted from the African-American Lectionary.org)

As Jesus and the prophet Martin taught…Let us go now and overcome.

Let us overcome racial hatred with love and understanding. Let the church say… Amen.

Let us overcome sexism with mutual honor and respect. Let the church say… Amen.

Let us overcome social inequities with fair and equal educational and employment opportunities. Let the church say… Amen.

Let us overcome mean-heartedness with a kind word or good deed. Let the church say… Amen.

Let us overcome war, poverty, hunger, and suffering throughout our urban streets and lands abroad, by sharing the love of Jesus the Christ with our neighbors. Let the church say… Amen.

For what does God require of us, but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God?

May the grace of Jesus the Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Amen.

Our mass is ended. Let us go forth now and overcome! Thanks be to God.

Closing Song – We Shall Overcome

We shall overcome, we shall overcome, We shall overcome someday;Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, We shall overcome someday.

We shall not be silent…

We’ll walk hand in hand…

We are not afraid…
