Theres nothing more rewarding for an overseas Fili-pino worker (OFW) than being able to come homefor Christmas to be with his / her family. But thereare times when sacrifices have to be made. Thatshouldnt stop anyone from being able to spend Christ-

mas with family even when they are miles apart.

Youve Got MailThe simplest form of communicating home would be sending aletter. It takes time for envelopes with letters and pictures toreach loved ones, but it is the simplest way to say you love themand in your own handwriting. For a faster way, theres email. That would require computers with internet connections for

here really is no place like home. This is most especiallytrue when Christmas is just around the corner. A lot ofPinoys outside the country choose to return home for

the holidays because nothing compares to spending Christmasand New Year in the Philippines.

Tis the SeasonThe Christmas season in the Philippines unofficially starts whenthe -ber months kick in. When September comes, the air

starts to chill. Radio stations start to play Christmas carols, jock-eying for the bragging rights of being the first to greet theirlisteners a Merry Christmas. October and November ushers inChristmas shopping. By November 3, malls take down theirspooky Halloween decor in favor of the festive decorations ofChristmas. Towns and cities start decorating their lamp poststoo, adding to the holiday spirit all throughout the Metro.

Proudly, in the Philippines, Christ is not forgotten in theword Christmas. The most common decoration associatedwith the season would be the parol. This lantern is said to sym-bolize the Star of Bethlehem which led the shepherds and thewise men to the manger where the child Jesus lay. That manger

/ the nativity scene is also a popular decor theme more com-monly known as the belen.

The Voices of AngelsYou know the season is upon you when you start hearing Christ-mas carols in the air, be it on the radio or from carolers singing atyour porch or by your car window. Arguably the most popularlocal song associated with the season is Gary V.s Pasko Na,Sinta Ko. And the most popular local Christmas album wouldbe Jose Mari Chans Christmas in Our Hearts.

For the MassesOne of the most memorable Catholic Christmas traditions is the

Simbang Gabi. The Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo meanswaking up early to hear mass.

For nine days, beginning December 16th, Filipinos flock tothe church for the traditional dawn masses usually at four oclockin the morning. This tradition traces its roots to Spanish friars whowanted farmers to hear mass before going to the fields early in themorning before the roosters crow. Gallo by the way, is Spanishfor rooster. The simbang gabi will continue right up to Christ-mas Day. On Christmas eve, there is the Panunuluyan (alsocalled thepananawagan andpananapatan).

Held on the night of the 24th of December, the Panunuluyanreenacts the search of the parents of Jesus for an inn. A youngcouple playing the parts of Joseph and Mary roam the streets,

knocking at the doors of houses, asking the occupants if theyhave room for the night. The couple are able to seek refuge inthe church just in time for the beginning of the Misa de

ere are some Christmas shopping tips that will helpyou save money while minimizing stress.

    1. Come up with a list. Santa Claus has a list ofpeople who would be getting Christmas gifts. You shouldtoo. You should also have a budget for each gift. Beingorganized saves you time and money. It also makes sureyou remember everyone you wish to give a gift to.

    2. Do your research. Find out how much items areselling for at various stores and buy from the store with thelowest price. Also try to be on the look out for unique giftsor special deals.

    3. Try smaller specialty stores, where you mightactually be served by a salesperson, before you suc-cumb to the big, busy department stores. Its easier toget to know the manager of a small store, which helps forvolume discounts, free gift-wrapping and other special treat-ment.

    4. Shop in bookstores and large drugstores. Al-most everyone on your list would be happy with a book orcalendar, and the range of prices will fit your budget. Drug-stores are also great hunting grounds; they are filled withtreasures this time of year, from unique holiday gifts toelectronic gadgets.

    5. Always keep receipts. Some of the gifts you give(especially clothes which dont fit) may need to be re-turned. Some stores even have a gift receipt, whichdoesnt show the price but allows the recip ient to easilyexchange or return your gift.

    6. Timing is everything. Do not shop when the storesare crowded with people. Avoid Saturdays at all costs.

Avoid the lunch hour and the two hours right after work.Early, late and during the dinner hour are good. Check forholiday hours; stores may open earlier or close later thanusual, which people might not realize. Youll have the storeand the salespeople all to yourself.

    7. Use the telephone. If youve chosen an item, whynot call the stores from the comfort of your home or office? Is the item in stock? Whats the best price?

    8. Think security. Unfortunately, pickpockets andthieves take advantage of the Christmas season. Be awareof this and dress down when shopping. Leave jewelry andexpensive watches at home. When walking to your carafter a day of gift shopping, remember where you parked.Try not to shop alone (70% of all shoppers victimized bytheft were shopping alone).

    H

Christmaswarming when you can really converse with someoneacross the miles knowing that the words arent comingfrom a tape recording. Newer technologies allow for videotelephony so you could see each other while you are talk-ing.

Instant MessagesWith the internet being more accessible and affordable for ev-eryone, technologies have emerged that could shorten the dis-tance especially this Christmas. Instant messaging, chat, voice, webcam and video applications and services like Yahoo Mes-senger, MSN Messenger, Skype, Stickam, etc. are already com-mon. Imagine sitting in front of your webcam and being able tocelebrate Christmas with friends and family wherever you arein the world.

Distance need not be a hindrance. With all these solutions,OFWs all over the world can celebrate the holidays and maketheir Christmases more meaningful this time around.

Aguinaldo or the Midnight Mass.During the mass, the young couple who played Joseph and

Mary in the Panunuluyan, together with a group of childrenportraying angels, hold a procession to a manger. As soon as Marylays the image of the baby Jesus in the manger, the congregationsings the Gloria accompanied by the tolling of church bells.

A Christmas FeastFood is an integral part of the Christmas tradition. During the

Simbang Gabi, churchgoers are treated to a wide array of nativedelicacies which make their appearance during the season. Somechurches serve the parishioners salabat(ginger tea) andpandesal(bread). But there are also a lot of vendors selling the traditionaldesserts like bibingka, kakanin (rice cakes) andputo bumbong(apurple rice cake cooked in bamboo tubes). An early morning mealis also heavenly with steaming hot local cocoa. Some mix in peanutbutter for a sweet, nutty concoction great for dippingpandesalin.

After the Misa de Aguinaldo comes the most anticipatedmeal of the season, the Noche Buena. The meal isnt completewithout the Christmas ham, the queso de bola (a big ball ofcheese) and roast chicken. A week later, amid the loud fire-

crackers said to scare away evil spirits, the Media Noche ormeal after the New Years eve mass, includespancit (noodles)for long life and round fruits like apples, grapes and oranges inthe hopes of ushering in a prosperous year.

The End of the SeasonOther than the New Year celebrationswhich come a week after Christmas, there are also Nios Inocentes and TheFeast of the Three Kings

Nios Inocentes or Holy Innocents Dayis celebrated on December 28.It is the equivalent ofApril

Fools Day in the countryso dont lend out anymoney on that day.The innocentsreferred to are thechildren who weremassacred on theorder of King Herod.

The Philippines is saidto have the longest Christ-mas celebration and it of-ficially ends on the Feast ofthe Three Kings or Tres

Reyes. It is also knownas the Feast of theEpiphany.

both parties. For a more instantaneous way of communicating, theres always text messaging.

Audio and VideoA common practice is sending recorded voice messages on cas-sette tape back and forth. It takes communicating to a higherlevel than letter-writing. With this way its more than just yourhandwriting, its your voice that could be heard. You can takethis one step further by using videocams so you could also beseen and heard onscreen.

    Wishing for a

Hindi ko talaga alam and I dont want to

speak for my family.

Kaya kung ano man yung iniisip nilangnaba-bother pa rin sila until now.

Kasikung next year, dapat nagpi-prepare na kamiby now dahil December na, parang short yunnine months.

OFWs Boost RP Construction IndustryTraveling across the country especially in Luzonone will observe the proliferation of attractivenewly built homes and on-going constructionof residential houses. The same scenario is no-ticeable across Metro Manila and suburbs.

Chances are these new houses are owned byoverseas Filipino workers (OFWs) includingbalikbayans.

Thankfully to the migrant Filipino work-ers, their remittances through the formal bank-ing system which now reached a record ofUS$10.7 billion had not only made the coun-try stayed afloat especially during the l997 Asianfinancial crisis but also continues to helpstrengthen the peso and boost economicgrowth.

Motivated by the improving outlook of thePhilippines, the OFWs, especially the diaspora

of wealthy professionals are fueling a consump-tion boom back home that is now spilling overto longer-term investments such as property. These are now the main target of the salespitches abroad by big property developers orga-nized by the government.

Big developers like Ayala Land andMegaWorld saw a remarkable net profit rise of92 percent from last year, driven by strong salesof residential condominium projects, residen-tial houses and rental revenue from its shop-ping malls.

The exciting prospects in the residential

market are being boosted by rising demandfrom migrant workers, improving affordability,

low interest rates, and rising middle-class de-mand, according to a report by UBS invest-ment bank.

In Region I, which is home of many Fili-pino migrants in the United States, a new build-ing boom is also being experienced as many

Ilocano balikbayans are building vacation andretirement homes. (Renee F. De Guzman / PIALa Union)

POEA Sets The Records StraightThe Philippine Overseas Employment Admin-istration (POEA) has denied claims by a non-government organization that a recruitmentagency continues to operate even after thecancellation of its license.

POEA Administrator Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said the POEA has cancelled the licenseof Emeville Manpower Services on May 25, 2006

for recruitment violations and since thenEmeville has ceased to operate as a licensed re-cruitment agency contrary to claims by the para-legal officer of Kanlungan Center Foundation,Inc Center for Migrant Workers.

The POEA also issued a closure orderagainst the recruitment agency on February17, 2006.

Baldoz said the POEA has assisted victimsof the agency in the filing of charges againstthe recruitment agency and has orderedEmeville to pay a total of PhP991,614.84 to some30 applicants as refund of application and

placement fees.Baldoz advises the victims to pursue crimi-

nal cases against Emeville even after they havealready recovered their money. The applicantspaid from PhP20,000 to PhP100,000 to theagency as placement fees.

Applicants for overseas jobs must be vigi-lant and must not be blinded by promises of

high paying jobs. They must check from POEAif the agency has a valid license and existingjob orders, and must not pay any amount un-less they have a legally binding employmentcontract already, Baldoz said. (POEA)

Kabayan Calls for OFW Rewards andLower Remittance Charges

Expecting another record-breaking inflow ofdollars this Christmas season, Vice PresidentNoli Kabayan De Castro, also the presidentialadviser OFWs, reiterated his proposal for a prac-tical approach to reward OFWs on their remit-

tances by lowering the banking charges andservice fees imposed on their remittances andthe institution of a raffle promotion as an addedattraction that would be appreciated by theOFWs and their families.

In his follow-up letter to Bangko Sentral ngPilipinas (BSP) Governor Armando Tetangco,Jr., Vice President De Castro asked for an up-date on his suggestions relayed through an ear-lier letter that aimed to further encourageOFWs to remit their valued earnings throughthe formal banking system that would undoubt-edly redound to the benefit of the country.

While acknowledging the measures beingundertaken by the BSP in promoting the bank-

ing system as the pri-mary remittance in-strument among theOFWs, the VicePresident, neverthe-less, cannot ignore

the fact that a greatnumber of OFWsand their familiescontinue to remit andexchange their dol-

lars through informal means.

At the same time, the Vice President DeCastro, who is also the concurrent chairmanof the Housing and Urban Development Co-ordinating Council (HUDCC), recognizedthat these much needed remittances greatlyhelped mitigate OFW-dependent familiesnot just in their everyday needs but in theirhousing project needs as well. Figures showthat about 30 to 40 percent of the sales of the

real estate developers come from OFW pur-chases (directly or indirectly). (OVP)

Q:I would like to ask if there are lawsthat protect franchisees in our country. Iam interested to get a franchise but I need

to do my homework regarding laws thatwould protect the franchisees. I look for-ward to your kind response. Thank you.

    Anthony

A:Thank you for your feedback, Anthony.Currently, there are no laws that regulatethe Franchise Businesses in the country. Thelaws that help safeguard the welfare of fran-chisees and franchisers as well as other busi-ness owners are those that pertain to con-tractual laws and other similar in any busi-ness transaction.

Since this is the case, a person or a groupdesiring to get a franchise should exercise whatI call the IFBI or Investigate First Before

Investing. Simply put, this means learning all aboutthe franchise before sinking a single centavo intothe venture. This includes getting to know the

complete details of the franchise such as: the franchise company the owner and/or the franchisor the total cost of investment including par-

ticulars like rental deposits and advances, costof permits,

forms of assistance before and during startof business.

    the concept the target location.

Take note that not only the franchisee butalso the franchisers needs to be protected. As

such, the franchiser will evaluate the suitablityof a franchisee based on his qualifications torun a business.

Franchisees should be prepared to showthat they have the time, money and experi-ence for the franchise. They should also com-

mit to a long term relationship and not justlearn the ropes and copy the franchise. Tomake sure franchisees manage the businesswell, they should have the headcount for eachfunction of operations, particularly the day-to-day management.

Lastly, it is in everyones best interest tocarefully study the franchise agreement.Never assume one knows everything. Ifthere are parts that need clarification, askthe franchiser before you sign the dottedline. Show the contract to your legal andbusiness advisers to make sure you are join-

ing the business with full understanding ofwhat you are getting into.

    Hope this helps.

The business got started with ini-tial capital of PhP80,000, five workersand a makeshift shed. When Abrawas devastated by a strong typhoon in1994, hude slabs of wood drifted to

the Gayao property, located along thebank of Ikmin River. Taking advan-tage of these raw materials, Mr. Gayaopurchased heavy-duty word workingequipment and machineries, whichhe later supplemented with otherequipments and tools to improve hisproducts and meet the demands ofwalk-in buyers.

Red Auerbachs coaching philosophywas simple: Only one statisticmattered. At the end of the game,

he wanted the number next to his team tobe greater than that next to his opponent.

The individual players werent the oneswho made the difference. It was the teamas a whole. Just being a member of awinning team was part of the Auerbachmystique.

Born to WinAuerbach guided the National BasketballAssociations Boston Celtics through theirdynasty, the greatest in NBA history. WithAuerbach at the helm as coach or in thefront office, the Celtics won 16 champion-ships. They captured nine titles during his

last 10 years as coach, including a recordeight straight from 1959 to 1966, whenRed, at only 48, stepped down to concen-trate on being the general manager.

He retired as the winningest coach inNBA history with 938 victories (against 479defeats) in his 20-year career, the last 16with the Celtics. Boston fans reveled whenAuerbach lit a cigar to signify that anothervictory was secure. Auerbach moved on tothe Celtics front office where he served firstas General Manager and then President. His

shrewed front office moves helped bring theCeltics another 7 championships, the lastone in 1986.

Probably his most notable attribute wasthat Auerbach was colorblind. He didnt seeblack or white players on the court; he justsaw players who could help him win. In1950, he became the first to draft anAfrican-American: Chuck Cooper, asecond-team All-American from Duquesne,in the second round. He was first to startfive blacks and first to hire a black coach(Bill Russell) in the NBA. He also hired two

other African-American coaches afterRussell stepped down - Satch Sanders andK.C. Jones, both former Celtics.

Regarded as a coaching genius,Auerbach was known for picking the rightplayers, coaching them and keeping themin line with his system. Employing a thenrevolutionary fastbreak offense in the early

1950s that often led to easy baskets, he ranonly seven basic set plays throughout hisentire Celtics coaching career.

Immigrant Achieves theAmerican DreamArnold Auerbach was born on Sept. 20,1917 in Brooklyn, New York., the son ofhard-working immigrants from Minsk,Russia. His father, Hyman, had left Russiawhen he was 13 and migrated to theUnited States. When Auerbach was born, his father and American-born mother

Marie owned a deli in Brooklyn.Auerbach longed to be a teacher and

coach. After a year at Seth Low JuniorCollege, the Brooklyn arm of ColumbiaUniversity, he transferred to GeorgeWashington University, where he was astandout basketball player. Auerbach leftGeorge Washington in 1941 with an M.A.,to go with the bachelors degree he hadearned earlier at the school.

Auerbach got his coaching wings atSt. Albans Prep School and Roosevelt

High School in Washington, D.C., beforeserving in the US Navy from 1943 to1946. He came out of the service andbegan his professional coaching careerwith the Washington Capitols, pilotingthe team to a league-best 49-11 regular-season record in 1946-47, the firstcampaign of the Basketball Associationof America (the forerunner of the NBA).

In Boston owner Walter Brown needed acoach in 1950 after the Celtics finished last inthe East with a 22-46 record. Not knowingmuch about basketball, he had an informal

advisory board make a recommendation. The boards conclusion: Auerbach was thebest coach available. Auerbach then moved

to Boston and proceeded to build one of thegreatest dynasties in all of sports.

A Coaching OriginalAuerbachs areas of expertise werespotting talent and getting the most of hisplayers. He said that his kind of playe rhad the ability to absorb coaching. Hewanted a kid who was great yet never

stopped being nice. Examples in hiscareer with the Celtics, as either a coachor in the front office, are Russell, BobCousy, Frank Ramsey, Tommy Heinsohn,Sam Jones, John Havlicek, Dave Cowens,Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and RobertParrish.

Also, Auerbach didnt focus on theindividuals on his teams. He looked at thewhole package. While many of his playerswere outstanding, the Celtics were the firstorganization to popularize the concept ofthe role player. Thats a player who

willingly undertakes the thankless job thathas to be done in order to make the wholepackage fly, Auerbach said. In addition,

    CelticPride

while most coaches view the starting five astheir best players, Auerbach often kept hisbest players on the bench at the beginningof games to keep them fresh for the finish. The sixth man (the first player off the

bench) was another Auerbach tactic. Whileother teams players were getting tired,Auerbachs fresh reserve was expected toprovide a boost. The sixth man became aprestigious assignment in Boston, withRamsey being the first to star in the assign-ment. Later sixth men included Havliceckand McHale.

Auerbach said that the Celtics repre-sent a philosophy that in its simplest formmaintains that victory belongs to the team.Individual honors are nice, but no Celtichas ever gone out of his way to achieve

them, he said. We have never had theleagues top scorer. In fact, we won sevenleague championships without placing evenone among the leagues top 10 scorers. Ourpride was never rooted in statistics.

In recent years, Auerbach had been inand out of hospitals for unspecified healthproblems. (Auerbachs family has re-quested that information on his conditionnot be released.) In the summer of 2005, hewas unable to attend his own basketballcamp and in September he was hospitalized

again, but he was released from thehospital in October.Auerbach died after a heart attack in

front of his home in Washington, D.C. onOctober 28, 2006, some five weeks afterhis 89th birthday. A private ceremony washeld and attended by 150 close friendsand family members. Auerbachs view ofcompetition was summed up when hesaid, Show me a good loser an d Ill showyou a loser. With that attitude, it is nosurprise Red Auerbach is a winner, thebest coach ever in the NBA

    Worlds Longest Mat in Ilocos

Local folks of this town are trying to make a record at theGuinness Book of Record by presenting their longest matduring their maiden Buri Festival on December 27-30, 2006.

Mayor Benjamin Sarmiento told on Monday that histownmates had weaving a 4-kilometer mat that will be laiddown along the streets during the opening of the festival onthe 27th of December.

Each mat weaver is set to make a five-meter long mat. Whichwill be connected to complete the 4 kilometers long mat.

Our Buri Festival falls with the celebration of our townfiesta, which we usually dubbed as San Juan Christmas Festi-val. However, we realized that we need to focus our fest intoone of our major products, so we have chosen the Buri Festi-val to promote our woven products and the same time, pro-mote our tourism industry, Sarmiento said.

Our fest for this year is different because we want to putour town in the world map as the producer of worlds longestmat, he added.

Highlights of the activities of the 3-day Buri Festivalinclude a grand parade and streetdancing competition dra-matizing the technology in making woven products; opening& cutting of ribbons of the newly constructed public market;amateur boxing competition; coronation of Miss San Juanfeaturing the three winners from America, Europe and Asia.

According to the mayor, a tax holiday will also be

launched, wherein resident vendors and visiting vendors areentitled for free taxes in selling their productsduring the fes-tival period.

Mayor Sarmiento cited the town of San Juan as the well-known producer of woven mats, hats and baskets in the Ilocosregion due to its abundance of buri (silag) plants in its easternbarangays.

Our residents from the eleven eastern barangays namely:Cacandungan, Darao, Lapting, Malammin, Labnig,Caronoan, Bannuar, Ressurecion, Camanggaan, Namurayaand Barbar are engaged in weaving of mats (banig), hat andbaskets, he said.

The Buri product was recognized by the Department of

Trade and Industry as the One Town One Project (OTOP)of San Juan town. (Freddie G. Lazaro / PIA Ilocos Sur)

    Cebus Kabayo Festival

Exploiting its edge in tourism, Cebu as the top tourist destina-tion in the country along with Bohol is embarking on anothercrowd drawer, the Kabayo Festival, an annual horse racingsports event that is now on its second year.

Department of Tourism (DOT-7) regional director PatriaAurora Roa in the launching of the festival this morning saidthey are promoting the Kabayo Festival slated on February 16to 18 in Mandaue City as a tourism sports event.

Roa urged horse afficionados, horse jockeys and other horseracing clubs to join the festival. The Kabayo Festival startedlast year.

As governments priority thrusts are on tourism and agricul-ture, a member of the travel agency association suggested thatthe Corn Festival may also be simultaneously be conductedwith the Kabayo Festival.

Bobby Joseph of the National Association of IndependentTravel Agencies (NAITAS) said instead of celebrating the CornFestival in the mountains, why not bring it down to coincidewith the Kabayo Festival?

The NAITAS together with the Mandaue City Govern-ment and the DOT-7 are working together to promote theKabayo Festival with the NAITAS chipping in P30,000 for theRodeo event as part of the festival attraction.

Joseph declared their group is hoping to sign an agreementand submit the document to the Philippine Tourism Authority

for their support so the promotion could get to the nationallevel. (PIA-Cebu/FCR)

GMA with Maverick and ArielThe comic tandem of Maverick Relova and Ariel Villasantagot what many Malacanang reporters have in the past tried butfailed to get from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo anambush interview outside the Palace.

And heres more, the two even managed to get themselvesinvited to Malacanang.

Relova and Villasanta, hosts of ABC 5 networks Totoo TV,became popular television personalities with their witty man-on-the-street interviews, which have been conducted without scripts.

The two have continued to hold spontaneous interviews, which they decided to do this time on politicians.

Relova and Villasanta attended the launching of a book

on Senator Edgardo Angara titled Ed Angara Seer of Seaand Sierra written by National Artist Nick Joaquin. Arroyowas special guest at the launch.

During the event, the two hobnobbed with politicians, academic personalities, and socialites.

They were seen, for one, interviewing designer TessaPrieto-Valdes.

Arroyo was seated with Angara and other politicians. As Arroyo stood up and was about to leave, Relova and

Villasanta, flashing their oversized press cards, approachedher and asked her to comment on Angara.

Hes a giant of an intellect, Arroyo told the two. Then seeing that Arroyo was ready for more queries, they

told her that it was the first time they saw her in person andthat she looked very beautiful.

Parang kade-debut niyo lang, maam [You look as if youjust had your debut], they said.

Arroyo, in yellow-gold pantsuit, smiled and thanked thetwo.

They also told Arroyo that they have never been toMalacanang and asked her when they would be invited.

Aayusin natin [Well fix it], Arroyo said.Arroyo was said to have been Relovas and Villasantas dream

interview. And where Relova and Villasanta apparently succeeded,

Palace reporters have not, as they continue to hound thePresident, hoping to get that elusive ambush interview. (PIA)
