Performance is based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that any user will experience will vary depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, the storage configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios stated here.

Early Returns… Very Positive!
31
“The third generation of XIV is all about adding performance– and plenty of it. Typically, a 2-4X improvement depending on the workload, with some impressive stats to match (such as <170 Sec for single I/O latency). In terms of general functionality, it’s the same as the preceding Gen 2, although that’s nothing to complain about, with its “automated-everything.” All told, good news for XIV converts (and-typically somewhat quietly-IBM has amassed thousands of them) and prospects.”
- Mark Peters, ESG
© 2011 IBM Corporation 32
“Traditionally, it took us months to figure out how to provide storage for new apps. Now, with XIV
we are proactive - providing 20-30TB of storage in minutes.”
-Val Christinsen, Storage Administrator, GEICO
“Not only does it do everything we were told it would, it exceeds everything that we expected, that
is why it is our standard for storage systems.”
- Greg Johnson, IT Director, VCU Hospital System
“The XIV solution exceeded everyone of our goals, and quite frankly it was the cheapest of all of
the five vendors”
- Bob Stone, Senior Network Engineer, City of Norfolk, Virginia
“Performance and ease of use are key – I only have four people to manage 650TB of data and the
XIV system was the only one that could deliver for us.”
- Chris Painter, IT Director, Carilion Clinic

“Simply Outstanding... Sensational…”
The worst case scenario included running a new baseline Exchange Jetstress test with 50+%
of the XIV architecture disabled. XIV, with a major disadvantage due to the disabled
architecture, still outperformed the unencumbered HP EVA and EMC DMX architectures.
Simply outstanding!

Bank of America: Fighting Gridlock with IBM & SAS
Background
• Largest bank holding company in the US; World’s largest global wealth manager
• 12.2% of all US deposits
• Total of 14 XIV systems in service; more planned this year
• Primarily used for Data Warehousing (Optim IIS) and SAS Analytics (Quantitative Finance)
• Both mission-critical, tier 1 applications
Results
• New analytics system has “set a new bar” and delivers “unparalleled performance”
• “This advanced grid platform is giving us unparalleled performance.” - Stephen Lange, Managing Director, Corporate Investments Group
• “…we have to score a particular portfolio of 400,000 loans with our suite of models, using multiple scenarios, and we need to run it over the 360 months of the mortgages’ life. That process used to take three hours, now it takes 10 minutes because of the parallelization capabilities of the grid. The ability to go from three hours to 10 minutes on a job demonstrates a tremendous increase in our ability to deliver information and make decisions.”
Sustained throughput
of 5.3 GB/s across
one pair of XIV
frames.

VCU HS – Transforming the Data Center with XIV
“Not only did XIV meet our
expectations, it greatly
exceeded them…”
“When I saw the first
presentation of XIV, I
thought… this is either the
greatest stuff since sliced
bread – having really
revolutionized the storage
industry, or… it’s a bunch
of smoke and mirrors.”
“
”
“XIV has truly proven itself
to be a revolutionary
technology. It changes
the whole paradigm of
storage.”

IBM XIV Storage Systems
Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated Enterprise-proven integration of VMware and IBM XIV delivers a consolidated solution
The need:
To cut operational costs and complexity, CCBCC decided to virtualize 500
servers with VMware—tripling SAN capacity requirements. The company
also needed more capacity for other platforms, including SAP.
The solution:
Deployed IBM XIV® Storage System for the VMware environment, with an
IBM System Storage® N6040 NAS Gateway for file serving. Moved SAP
systems to a second XIV, soon to be asynchronously mirrored to
a third.
The benefit:
Provides a single, enterprise-proven storage platform for all storage
needs, consolidating from three disparate storage systems to one
Offers a 200 to 300 percent performance boost compared to existing
tier-two storage, at one-third of the price of existing tier-one storage
Includes remote mirroring and advanced tools at no additional charge,
avoiding $100 - $300k annual expenditure on third-party solutions
“The primary benefit of
the IBM XIV solution is
its ability to deliver tier-
one performance at a
tier-two price.
Compared to our old
tier-two storage, we are
seeing a 200 to 300
percent increase in I/O
performance for a
similar price per TB.”
—Tom DeJuneas,
IT Manager at CCBCC
