En el año 2004, cuándo decidí comprar un seguro médico, un simple exámen de sangre cambió mi vida drástica-mente cuándo fuí diagnosticada con Hepatitis C. Yo había recibido una trans-fusión de sangre a la edad de 3 años cuándo fui operada del corazón.Después de un ir y venir con doctores, pronto descubrí que no iba a tener los medios para costear el alto precio de los exámenes de laboratorio, biopsias, doctores y medicamento, pues no contaba con un seguro. Fué un tiempo de mucho estrés, pero a la vez de más Fé.Dios puso en mi camino a la persona adecuada, y me refirió al Baylor Clinic en la ciudad de Houston, Tx., ahí me recibió Jana, la persona encargada de un proyecto nuevo y aunque en esa ocasión no fuí aceptada para tomar el tratamiento, yo seguí creyendo y teniendo Fé en que Dios iba a obrar, y asi fué.Pasé un tiempo muy difícil, pero X Fé terminé mi tratamiento hace un año, y ahora me encuentro libre del virus.Así es como nació el deseo de hacer ésta revista, para que a través de ella podamos ayudar de alguna manera para prevenir o diagnosticar a tiempo esta terrible enfer-medad.Agradezco a Dios, a mi familia y amigos que oraron conmigo y me apoyaron en ese tiempo.Los invito a leer los artículos que tenemos en las páginas de este ejemplar, y espero que sean de gran bendición para ustedes.

In 2004, when I decided to buy a medical insurance, a simple blood test changed my life drastically when I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. I received a blood transfusion at the age of 3 when I had a heart operation. After many visits to doctors’ offices, soon I discovered that it was not going to have the means to pay for the high price of the laboratory tests, biopsies, doctors and medicine, because my insurance did not cover it. It was a time of a lot of stress, but simulta-neously of more Faith. God put in my way a suitable person which referred me to the Baylor Clinic in the city of Houston, Tx., there I was received by Jana, the person in charge of a new project and although in that occasion I was not accepted to take the treatment, I continued believing and having Faith in God was going to intervene, and thus was. I went through a very difficult time, but X Faith I finished my treatment a year ago, and now I am virus free. This is how the desire to make this one magazine was born, so that through this media we can help somehow, in time, to prevent or to diagnose this terrible disease. I am thankful to God, family and friends that prayed with me and supported me in that time. I invite you to read the articles that we have in the pages of this magazine, and hope that they are of great blessing for you.

Los jóvenes de hoy, son fruto de una generación de padres que se han esforzado por brindarles un mayor confort y comodi-dad económica. La vida de estos jóvenes está rodeada de la gratificación y placer, cuyas decisiones son tomadas a través de estos parámetros. Son jóvenes que están bombardeados de mucha información, que les brindan diferentes estilos de vida, invitándolos a tener una filosofía de cama-león, que se acomoda al ritmo de la sociedad cambiante, a su vez esto provoca que estén más desorientados.Esto nos lleva a una dualidad como padres: guiar nuestra familia por los valores inestable de la sociedad tan cambiante o afirmarnos en principios que Dios ha estab-lecido en su palabra. Como padre prefiero los principios eternos y firmes, que no dependen de factores sociales que mudan frecuentemente. Por esta razón te presento 5 principios para criar a nuestros hijos en un mundo tan cambiante.

1. Padres por siempre. 1 Timoteo 3:4 Que gobierne bien su casa y tenga a sus hijos en sujeción con toda dignidad. Como padres debemos estar consientes de que no debemos aban-donar nuestra labor de padres; es un legado que Dios nos ha dado. Los hijos no deben tener un sentimiento de que tuvieron padres ausentes o indiferentes, a los cuales no les importa lo que suceda con ellos. Independientemente de los resultados no abandones tu papel de padre.

2. No se ausente en tiempos de crisis o de conflictos. Proverbios 22:15 La insensatez está ligada al corazón del joven, pero la vara de la disciplina la hará

alejarse de él. Como padres debemos ser firmes en los principios que se

tienen que aplicar, a la misma vez, también tenemos que

ejercer el papel de orienta-dores, esto debido a la

experiencia de vida que se tiene. El papel orientador es la oportunidad que Dios nos da en la vida de nuestros hijos para guiarlos a un grado de madurez mayor. Para ello necesitamos

hacer acto de presen-cia y aliento, no ausen-

tarnos y abandonarlos.

3. Sus hijos requieren cantidad y tiempo de

calidad. Proverbios 22:6 Instruye al niño en su camino; y aun cuando

sea viejo, no se apartará de él. No se refugie en la frase: "YO LE DOY CALI-

DAD DE TIEMPO A MIS HIJOS PORQUE NO TENGO CAN-

TIDAD DE TIEMPO PARA ELLOS". Las corrientes

afectivas de comuni-cación entre padres e hijos, comienza con un proceso de enseñanza, para lo cual necesitamos pasar tiempo con ellos. La imposición e

imitación, son aspec-tos superficiales en el

proceso de la enseñanza de los niños.

Tiempo y esfuerzo constante son la llave de una

buena internalización de corrientes afectivas en los hijos.

4. Enséñeles a decir NO, y no solamente diga no por ellos. Colosenses 3:21 Padres, no irritéis a vuestros hijos, para que no se desanimen. Usando el método Aristóteles, preguntas y respuesta, analice con su hijo cada situación, ventajas y desven-tajas, para tomar una decisión correcta. Imponer reglas y límites no es el mejor camino, jóvenes y niños respetan mejor las reglas y límites de un hogar siempre y cuando razonan, negocian y se comprometen en común acuerdo con los padres.

5. Enseña Principios Bíblicos a sus hijos. Deuteronomio 6:6 Estas palabras que yo te mando estarán en tu corazón. 7 Las repetirás a tus hijos y hablarás de ellas sentado en casa o andando por el camino, cuando te acuestes y cuando te levantes. No es suficiente hacer responsables, honesto y trabajadores a nuestros hijos. Tenemos que legar el valor de la fe, amor, paciencia, esper-anza y lo más importante amar a Dios y al prójimo. Estar preparados para la vida no es solo responder a las demandas de la sociedad, sino, cual es mi respuesta frente a dichas demandas. Para este fin necesitamos un fundamento firme y solido, que además sea como un filtro, Dios. Educa a tus hijos en los fundamentos de la Biblia, así ellos tendrán valores para el resto de su vida. 5

Young people today are the product of a generation of parents who have struggled to provide them with greater comfort and a better economic status. The lives of these young people is surrounded by the gratification and pleasure, and whose decisions are made through these parameters. These youths are bombarded with a lot of informa-tion, logically this provides them different lifestyles, inviting them to have a philosophy of a chameleon, that changes along with the rhythm of the changing society, in turn this causes them to be more confused.This takes us to a duality as parents: to guide our family with the unstable values of such a changeable society or to steady ourselves in principles that God has established in his word. As a parent I prefer the eternal and firm principles, not dependent on social factors that move frequently. For this reason I present to you 5 principles to raise our children in such a changeable world.

1. Parents forever. 1 Timothy 3:4 One that ruleth well his own house and having his children in subjection with all dignity. As parents we must be aware that we must not abandon our labor as parents, it is a legacy that God has given us. Our children should not have a feeling that they have absent or indifferent parents, who do not care what happens to them. No matter what the circumstances are do not give up your role of a parent.2. Do not be absent in times of crisis or of conflicts. Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from

him. As parents we should be firm in the principles that we apply, at the same time, we also have to exercise

our role as guidance counselors, due to the experience that life has given us. The guidance counselor role is the opportu-nity that God gives us in the life of our children to guide them to a degree of greater maturity. In order to achieve this we need to be present and not be away or

abandon them. 3. Our children require quantity and quality of time. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it. Do not shelter in the phrase: " I GIVE QUALITY OF TIME TO MY CHILDREN BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE QUANTITY TIME FOR THEM ". The emotional currents of communication between parents and children, begins with a process of teaching, for which we need to spend time with them. Imposition and imitation, are superficial aspects in the process of teaching our children. Time and constant effort are the key of a good internalization of emotional currents in our children. 4. Teach them to say NO, do not only say no for them. Colosenses 3:21 Fathers, provoke not your children, that they be not discouraged. Using Aristotle’s method, questions and answer, analyze

each situation with your child, consider advantages and disadvantages,in order to make a correct decision. Imposing rules and setting limits is not the best road, teenagers and children respect the rules and limits of a home more as long as these rules and limits make sense to them, they can then negotiate

and compromise in common agree-ment with parents.5. Teach your children Biblical priciples. Deuteronomy 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart; 7 and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. It is not sufficient to raise our children into honest, responsible, or just workable citizens. We have to bequeath the value of faith, love, patience, hope and most importantly to love God and others. Being prepared for life is not only to respond to society’s demands, but, what will their answer be to such demands. To accomplish this principle we need to establish a firm and solid foundation, that addition-ally will serve as a filter, God. Educate your children by implement-

ing the Bible’s fundamentals, in order to allow them to acquire values for the rest of their life.

La hepatitis C es una enfermedad crónica transmitida por un virus que afecta a un gran numero de personas, muchas de las cuales no saben tenerla. Se estima que el 1.8% de la población en USA esta infectada (aproximadamente 5 millones de personas). Es una enfermedad mayormente indolente (el síntoma mas común es el cansancio) por lo que la mayoría de los afectados la tiene por años sin saberlo y muchas veces se enteran cuando encuentran que su hígado está inflamado en exámenes médicos de rutina o cuando la enfermedad ha progresado a cirrosis y empiezan a desarrol-

lar síntomas serios.

El modo de transmisión es en la mayoría de

los casos por vía sanguínea,

ya sea por t rans -

fusión directa de sangre contaminada (generalmente ocurridas antes de 1992 cuando se empezó a descartar este virus en las unidades de sangre y otros productos sanguí-neos) o por objetos contaminados (agujas reusadas por adictos a drogas i n t r a v e n o s a s , pajas de cocaína compartidas, t a t u a j e s hechos con agujas no descartables). La transmis-ión sexual es muy rara así como tam-bién de la madre al bebe en e l embarazo o parto.

La inflamación crónica y persistente causa acumulo de cicatrices en el hígado (fibrosis), cuando la mayoría de tejido normal es reemplazado por ese tejido fibroso afectando su funcionamiento normal le llamamos cirrosis. La cirrosis se relacionaba mayormente al consumo de alcohol pero ahora sabemos que en USA la causa más común de cirrosis es hepatitis C. Usualmente toma de 20 a 30 años para que una persona con hepatitis C desarrolle cirrosis. Sin embargo en personas que consumen alcohol se puede desarrollar ésta en tan poco como 4 a 5 años.

La hepatitis C no tratada puede llevar a insuficiencia hepática, cirrosis (con sus complicaciones incluyendo sangrado intestinal, acumulo de liquido abdominal, confusión mental, etc.), cáncer de hígado y muchas otras complicaciones. Personas

con cirrosis avanzadas y con cáncer de hígado temprano

muchas veces dependen del trasplante para su mejoría. Actualmente la mayoría de trasplantes de hígado son hechos a personas con cirrosis causada

por hepatitis C.

Felizmente existe tratamiento para la hepatitis C, este consiste en una inyección semanal (Interferon alpha) junto con 4 a 6 pastillas diarias (Ribavirina) que se reciben por un lapso de

24 a 48 semanas (6 a 11 meses aproximada-

mente). La posibili-dad de curarse con el tratamiento es del

40 al 80% dependiendo del subtipo de hepatitis C

(hay 6 subtipos, los más comunes en USA son los subti-pos 1, 2 y 3). Este tratamiento

está asociado con efectos adver-sos (mayormente transitorios) por

lo que se necesita contacto cercano con su médico así como mucho apoyo familiar y social.

Actualmente se están investigando nuevas medicinas que se esperan sean aun más efectivas, que requieran menos tiempo de tratamiento y con menos efectos adversos.

A las personas con hepatitis C crónica se les recomienda evitar cualquier consumo de alcohol para prevenir el avance rápido de la enfermedad así como consultar a su médico para un posible tratamiento. También se recomienda evitar transmitir la enfermedad teniendo cuidado con objetos que pudieran tener partículas de sangre (rasuradoras, cepillos de dientes, agujas), así como cubrir heridas que puedan exponer sangre.

Si usted piensa que ha sido expuesto a sangre contaminada por algunas de las vías descri-tas anteriormente consulte con su médico para que le hagan una prueba de descarte y no esperar a que se sorprenda un día cuando tenga la enfermedad avanzada. Se sabe que personas que tienen menor fibrosis o cicatri-ces en el hígado tienen mejor oportunidad de curarse con el tratamiento.

Una enfermedad silenciosa:HEPATITIS C

Hepatitis C is a chronic disease transmitted by a virus that affects a large number of people many of whom don't know they have it. An estimated 1.8 per cent of the US population is infected (5 million people approximately). Mostly an indolent disease (the most common symp-tom is fatigue) a large number of people carry the disease for years without know-ing it and often become aware when told in routine medical examinations or when disease has progressed to cirrhosis and start developing serious symptoms.

The mode of transmission is in most cases through blood, either by direct blood

transfusion (usually occur-

ring before 1992 when

HCV testing

was

not available yet) or by contaminated objects (syringes or straws shared by drug addicts, needles used for tattoos, etc). Sexual transmission is very rare as well as vertical transmission from the mother to the baby during pregnancy or at the time of delivery.

Chronic and persistent inflammation causes accumulation of scar tissue in the liver (fibrosis), when the majority of normal tissue is replaced by scarring affecting its normal functioning is called liver cirrhosis. The most common cause of liver cirrhosis used to be alcohol but nowadays hepatitis C is the most common cause of cirrhosis in the USA. It usually takes 20 to 30 years for someone with hepatitis C to develop cirrhosis. However in people who consume alcohol cirrhosis may develop in as little as 4 to 5 years.

Untreated hepatitis C can lead to liver failure, cirrhosis (with their complica-tions including intestinal bleeding, retention of liquid in the abdomen, mental confusion, etc.), liver cancer and many other complications. People with advanced cirrhosis and liver cancer often depend on liver transplantation to survive. Currently most liver trans-plants are done in people with cirrhosis caused by hepatitis C.

Fortunately there is treatment for hepatitis C. It consists of a weekly injection (Interferon alpha) along with 4-6 daily tablets (Ribavirin)

which are taken for a period of 24 to 48 weeks (6

to 11 months approxi-

mately).

The cure rate with this treatment is 40 to 80 % depending on the subtype of hepatitis C (there are six subtypes; the most common in the USA are genotypes 1, 2 and 3). This treatment is associated with adverse effects (mostly transient) so close follow up with your doctor as well as family and social support is needed.

New medicines currently in research are expected to be even more effective, requiring less time of treatment with fewer side effects.

People with chronic hepatitis C are advised to avoid any alcohol consumption to prevent rapid progression of the disease and to consult their doctor for possible treatment. Also avoid transmitting the disease being careful with objects that might have blood particles (razors, toothbrushes, needles), as well as to cover wounds that can expose blood to others. If you think that you may have been exposed to blood contaminated with the hepatitis C virus by some of the ways described above inform your doctor, he can order a blood test to determine if you have the virus and advise you treatment instead of waiting until you develop advanced disease. It is known that people who have less fibrosis or scarring in the liver have better chance of cure with current therapy.

a difficulty. It should maintain us in contact and support the joint life of spouses. It is difficult to grow in love with someone who we never see or who we never speak to. Signifi-cant contact is necessary for a relation to mature.
