Xavier Escribà’s (Paris, 1969) work inhabits that nebulous

area between painting and sculpture, being neither, while

both at the same time. Created by layering coats of paint,

the artist slices them into strips, turns them inside out or

arranges his materials to suggest biomorphic shapes,

boxes or cushions, liberating the work from the constric-

tions of subject and framing to deliver us a conceptual

body of work that defines the materialness of art.

Accumulation, a profound concern for the material, and

the elimination of the frame result in a group of paintings

that are unexpectedly sculptural. “I create objects without

wanting to. So I have to accept that I make sculptures,

even if 95% of my activity consists of painting.” He creates

these hybrid works through a slow and persistent process

that he loosely defines as the “witness of his experience.”

Laying monochrome sheets of acrylic paint over one an-

other, conceals the paint, leaving it barely perceptible

while revealing its sides or reverse in volumetric forms that

are the accumulation of this experience.

Xavier Escribà has exhibited widely over the past 25 years

with exhibitions all over Europe and his work can be

found in numerous public collections, including the Fonds

Municipal d’Art Contemporain (Paris), the Musée d’Art

Moderne de Ceret (France), the Museu d’Art Modern (Tar-

ragona), amongst

others.

La obra de Xavier Escribà (Paris, 1969) habita esa

zona nebulosa entre la pintura y la escultura, no

siendo ninguna mientras es ambas a la vez. Creada

con capas de pintura que el artista trocea en tiras,

vuelve al revés o altera el orden de los materiales

para sugerir formas biomórficas, cajas o cojines,

Escribà nos libera de las constricciones de la repre-

sentación y el encuadre para entregarnos una obra

conceptual que define la materialidad del arte.

Acumulación, una profunda preocupación por el

material, y la eliminación del marco se presenta en

un grupo de pinturas que son inesperadamente es-

cultóricas. “Puedo crear objetos sin querer. Así que

tengo que aceptar que hago esculturas, aunque

el 95% de mi actividad consiste en la pintura.” El

crea estas obras híbridas a través de un proceso

lento y persistente que él define en términos gener-

ales como el “testimonio de su experiencia.” Com-

binando capas monocromas de pintura acrílica

sobre otras, oculta la pintura, dejándola apenas

perceptible, mientras que revela sus lados o reverso

en formas volumétricas que son la acumulación de

esta experiencia.

En los últimos 25 años Xavier Escribà ha tenido ex-

posiciones por toda Europa y su obra se puede en-

contrar en numerosas colecciones públicas, como

el Fonds Municipal d’Art Contemporain (Paris), el

Musée d’Art Moderne de Ceret (France), el Museu

d’Art Modern (Tarragona), entre otros.
