I dentifying a table a values as linear or nonlinear

One of the tables of values below represents a linear f unction and the other does not. I dentif y the tables as linear or non linear and explain how you can tell.

Circle one: Linear Nonlinear Circle one: Linear Nonlinear

Explanation: Explanation:

Consistent change. m = -15/2

Inconsistent change.

Try: I dentif y each table of values as linear or nonlinear and explain.

x F(x) 1 12 2 7 3 4 4 3

x y 1 0 2 2 3 4 4 6

x F(x) 1 1 4 7 5 10 8 15

Non-linear. Inconsistent change.

Linear. Consistent change.m = 2

Non-linear. Inconsistent change.

Example 1: y – intercept is given

Write an equation in slope intercept f orm f or the following table of values.

x y -1 -1 0 2 3 11 5 17

Step 1: Find the slope.

Step 2: Find the y-intercept.

Step 3: Use the slope and y-intercept to write your equation in slope-intercept f orm.

m = 17 – 11 = 6 = 3 Slope = 3 5 – 3 2

b = 2. Read it from the chart.

y = 3x + 2

Example 2: y-intercept is not given

x y -4 -5 -1 1 1 5 3 9

Step 1: Find the slope.

Step 2: Find the y-intercept.

Step 3: Use the slope and y-intercept to write your equation in slope-intercept f orm.

m = 9 – 5 = 4 = 2 Slope = 2 3 – 1 2

Count backwards. Teacher demonstration.b = 3

y = 2x + 3

Try: Write an equation in slope-intercept f orm f or the f ollowing tables.

1.

2.

x y -2 -5 0 -1 2 3 3 5

x y -4 -2 0 1 4 4 12 10

3.

4.

x y -2 -3 2 -1 4 0 6 1

x y -3 10 -1 6 1 2 3 -2

y = 2x - 1

y = ¾ x + 1

y = -2x + 4

y = ½ x - 2

Write the equation of the line given two points.

Together:

1) (1, 8) (4, 17) 2) (2, -4) (6, -6)

Identifying Linear vs. NonLinear You try:

3) (1, 3) (4, 15) 4) (3, 4) (6, 6)

m = (17-8)/(4-1) = 9/3 = 3Then use y = mx + b to find b.y = mx + b17 = 3(4) + b17 = 12 + b5 = bThen write equation…y = 3x + 5

m = (-6-(-4))/(6-2) = -2/4 = - ½ Then use y = mx + b to find b.y = mx + b-6 = -1/2(6) + b-6 = -3 + b-3 = bThen write equation…y = -½ x - 3

y = 4x - 1 y = 2/3 x + 2
