mosaicfacingthestoneseat,turntoyourrightandwalktoParkHillroad(10m).Crosstheroadbythepedestriancrossingandgodownthealleywayahead,toreachHighStreet.TurnleftandproceedtotheminiroundaboutattheentrancetotheHighStreetcarparkontheright.Walkthroughthecarparkheadingforafootpathatthefarlefthandcorner,withthefootballfieldontheleftandtheriversidepicnicareaontheright.

AboutThisWalkFromGarstangweheadNorth,initiallyfollowingtheriverWyre,thenoneofitstributaries–GrizedaleBrook.AftercrossingthebusyM6motorwaythere’sasectionoffarmlandandwoodlandbeforejoiningaquietcountrylaneintothepicturesquevillageofScorton.Thenextsectionisaverywaterylandscapedottedwithmanylakes;evidenceoflarge-scalegravelworkingsthathavenowbeensensitivelyreturnedtonature.AfterpassingthroughtheWyreside

Lakesfisheryandcaravansitetheroutere-joinstheriverWyrethroughalovelystretchofcountrysidetotheformermillvillageofDolphinholme.TheroutetoAbbeysteadbeginshighalongthesideoftheriverWyrevalley,offeringgreatviewsacrosstotheNorthBowlandFellsofWard’sStone,GritFellandClougha.AfterdescendingtotheriversidewepassthesiteofthetragicAbbeysteadwater-worksexplosionof1984.ThefinalstretchpassesinfrontofthenowdisusedAbbeysteaddam–whichinformertimeswasusedtostorewaterforthemanymillssiteddownstreamalongtheriver.

THEREARENOWTWOROUTEOPTIONS;paragraphs5-8belowfollowaslightlyhigherlevelrouteacrossfieldpathstothevillageofScorton,withgoodviewsonaclearday.However,ifyouwishtostayclosertotheRiverWyre,gothroughthegateandturnleft,followingHazelheadLanetowhereitjoinsGubberfordLanenearabridgeovertheRiverWyre.Donotcrossthebridge,butbearrightacrosstheroadandthroughapedestriangatetojointheriversidepath.Followthepath,whicheventuallyjoinstheroad,underarailwaybridgeandonintoScortonVillage.Nowcontinuefromparagraph9.
