REFLECTIONSDorothy North Miller ’39 Stuart, FLFirst let me thank you for sending me the ECHO via “snail mail”. I have neither a computer nor a cell phone, so I greatly appreciate your taking the time to mail the ECHO.

This month I turned 92, graduated from Wyoming High in 1939. Last Saturday to celebrate the big day, Ibby Raney (Elizabeth Warner) ’40, who lives 10 minutes from me, and I drove to Vero to have lunch with Patty Herpel (Patricia Blocher ’40). Between the three of us, we total 274 years! We’re all still well and functioning – must be that wonderful Wyoming water!! Although there aren’t many left that I know – or who are children and grands of people I did know, I still like keeping track of the village I grew up in and loved.

Bill Bowen ’51 Princeton, NJBill, the former President of Princeton University, was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama at a White House Ceremony in July. Bill graduated from Denison University, received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton in 1958. He joined the faculty the same year, became Provost in 1967, and President in 1972.

Wally Holzman AUX ’54 Cincinnati, OHWally was inducted into the 12th Class of the Cincinnati Tennis Hall of Fame in August before the Western & Southern Open. He was co-captain of the UC team in the 1950’s and climbed as high as No. 16 in the NCAA rankings. Wally has served on the boards of Tennis for Charity , the Ohio Valley Tennis Association and the U.S. Tennis Association.

Ken Neaman ‘56 Cincinnati, OHAn accomplished woodworker, Ken was awarded, by the Cincinnati Woodworking Club, the Fred Weissborn Quality Award. His most recent project is a Tiger Maple Buffet/Chest of Drawers he designed and built.

Jim Short ’64 Bethesda, MDAfter getting math & engineering degrees from Syracuse University, I got my PhD in engineering at Berkeley. I worked for a small company in Sunnyvale, California that included opening a branch office @ Wright Patterson Air Force Base. I worked as a Navy civilian scientist from 1978 through 2004. Then I went to the Pentagon with the Office of the Secretary of Defense. I retired in 2007 as the Director for Defense Laboratories and Defense Basic Science to become a visiting professor of engineering at the University of Maryland. While a graduate student at Berkeley, I was a Kensington, California Boy Scout leader where I came to enjoy 50-mile summer backpacking in the High Sierra Mountains. For the past 15 years I have been active in Scouting in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase-Kensington, Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. This enabled 3 more High Sierra backpacking trips with Troop 8 Scouts. I was one of a plethora of volunteers that created the Washington, DC History of Scouting Trail. Since the Boys Scouts were chartered by Congress 100 years ago, there is a lot of Boy Scouting history to be found in Washington, DC. Visit the trail on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/HistoryOfScoutingTrail.

Don Weaks ’64 Biarritz, FranceIt must be very spiritual as Don has once again walked-the-walk. He has completed Walking the Camino A journey to attempt to cross an entire country on foot - with only a backpack, a pair of boots and an open mind. Driven by an inexplicable calling and a grand sense of adventure, each pilgrim throws themselves heart-and-soul into their physical trek to Santiago and, most importantly, their personal journey to themselves.

Several of the Fall teams are still competing as of the date of this publication and we look forward to supporting them in the quest for state championships.

Special thanks to the Wyoming Boosters who do so much behind the scenes to ensure our student athletes have the resources needed to reach our full potential.

On Wyoming!

Much like the current school building on Wyoming Avenue which was once home to K-12 at the same time, the 2nd school building to serve Wyoming was also home to all grades with it’s 8 classrooms! Part of the foundation of this 1880 building were unearthed during the bulldozing phase of the current school remodel.

This school, which faced Worthington Avenue and had a large circular driveway, was built to replace a 1-story wooden school which was located facing Wyoming avenue at the junction of Wyoming Avenue and the Boulevard. That was built in 1842 and added on to at least once. Wyoming’s population increased dramatically, and in 1889 the “Tower” high school building was built on the west side of the property in the general area of the current driveway and cafeteria. The current building was built in 1928 from east to west and overlapped the “tower” building with it’s west wing. More photos of the school yard and the discoveries are on pages 3, 7, 11, and our web site. Kathy Ryan, retired Middle School Principal, writes weekly about whats happening and often has pictures on the Wyoming City Schools web site, www.wyomingcityschools.org. Click on the Middle School Construction Project Blog on the right side.

HISTORY UNEARTHED AT MIDDLE SCHOOL SITE...

Shown here are three bottles found at the site. An ink bottle, a coke bottle of heavy glass with the date 1915, a bottle from the Fladung Bottling Plant on Benson Street in Reading which made Rainbow Beverages, and what appears to be your standard beer bottle with no markings what-so-ever!

An Exciting Time of Year !Fall is always an exciting time of year as the leaves turn vivid colors, the World Series looms ahead, football at all levels once again gets us excited about our favorite teams, and students head back to school. One of the pleasures I especially enjoy each year is participating in the Sunday evening gathering of parents and seniors as they are presented with a packet of information of the year ahead, and especially how to prepare for submitting their applications to the colleges of their choosing. Prominently displayed in each of those packets is a form for purchasing a Graduation Walkway Brick. Those of us staffing the Wyoming High School Alumni Association’s table enjoy talking with students and parents encouraging them to be among those whose bricks will be in the Walkway when they parade toward receiving their diploma June 2014. More than 3,360 bricks have been “planted” so far and in the near future, we will have to prepare space for two more rows.

Change is underway, too, at the Wyoming Middle School as the renovations and expansion overwhelmingly approved by Wyoming voters in March 2012 are well underway – see the story on page. In the meantime, students in the 5th through 8th Grades are in temporary climate controlled classrooms in the modular units installed in the area normally allocated to the varsity baseball field. Based on the current schedule, it’s anticipated that they will be there sharing cafeteria and gymnasium facilities with the high school students through the end of 2014. For weekly updates, add your name where indicated at http://wmsconstruction.wordpress.com.

Two requests:

1) If you are responsible for organizing your Reunion, please consider share your classmate’s current e-mail addresses with us. That will permit us, with their permission, to provide them with future issues of The ECHO electronically. It has become too expensive to do so by US Mail.

2) Please do consider joining, renewing or if a Lifetime member, making a contribution to “your” alumni association – the Wyoming High School Alumni Association. Details for doing so are provided on page__ of this issue of The ECHO and at our official website at: www.wyominghighschoolalumni.com. Thanks to all for helping us keep one another connected. Jon B. Boss – Class of [email protected]

PRESIDENT’S LETTER...

ADDITIONAL ITEMS FOUND...The two bottles both have S.C. Johnson & Sons, Racine, WIS on the bottom. One held Johnson’s Wax the other wood dye or as we know it wood stain. The brick is from the 1880’s school structure as is the hand extruded clay pipe. Another piece of pipe was found intact at another location where a house sat on the property facing Worthington. In the Mid-1800’s there were three houses on that property we know as the playground.

Byron Todd Jones ‘75 was sworn in on July 31 as the Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Macalester College in 1979 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1983. As a Marine Todd served as an infantry officer with the 1st Marine Division and later became a judge advocate as both a trial defense counsel and prosecutor. He most recently was the U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota. In 2011 he was appointed acting Director.

While brother Todd was doing his thing little sister, Jennie ‘87, was having a showing of her Acoustic Paintings at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. He goes up diddley up-up and then wanders all over the place. That’s the life of Gary Kapphahn ’56. He admits to not being much of a student in high school so afterwards he dabbled. He dabbled in college, sold pots and pans, was a DJ, then signed up for diesel repair in the Army. When in the nick-of-time he learned of a Navy Cadet flight training program that would send him on his way to a commission. He went to boot camp, loved the military, tested into a special Navy program, earned his commission as an Ensign and his wings by 1960.

He flew the A4 Skyhawk which was a weapons delivery plane – low level -under the radar – air to ground. As an instructor, one of his students was John McCain. Gary flew off the USS Ticonderoga and USS Constellation. Imagine landing on what is equivalent to a postage stamp in the middle of a waving sea of water with no borders. Daunting!!

Gary left the military in 1967 to fly international trips for Northwest Airlines but the job just wasn’t his cup of tea. So he started an electronics company with the thought of leaving Northwest and being an entrepre-neur. He ended up doing both until he retired early from Northwest in 1994.

In 1974 he bought a boat and lived on it with his family for 10 years, cruising Alaska during the summers with his wife and kids. Now, divorced and kids grown, he lives in a motor home full time and on the road.

So after flying for 36, years what do you do to appease that need to soar? You buy yourself a Trike, have a trailer built to house it and your car, tow it behind your motor home so you can fly just about any time you want. A Trike is considered a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) by the FAA and requires licensing. In Gary’s case it was an endorsement to his existing licenses. But it required instruction and proficiency testing as it is a “weight shift control” aircraft. A bit different than your average jet!

So in his retirement he now tows his hobby behind his home and ventures from small airport to small airport where he can fly (up to 10,000 feet above sea level) and enjoy the sights of places like, Texas, Phoenix and Seattle and still be close enough to his family and grand kids to enjoy their company. The freedom of flight! To see more about the Trike go to northwing.com.

Left, Gary in his Trike, above as a Navy pilot, below the trailer with car and Trike.

This is the foundation of the 1880’s school building. It is the back side of the building where indoor plumbing was added. Note the brick piece - lower right. In a herringbone pattern, that was probably the flooring of the bathrooms. Pieces of porcelain from the plumbing fixtures are visible in the center bottom.

RICK & IBBY POTTER DAVIS ‘57HONORED IN STATE OF WYOMING!

As so many do, they met at Wyoming High School, married, and expected to have children. When that part of the dream didn’t happen, they adopted two children (Katie and Stuart both now 40+) through the Wyoming Children’s Society - that’s STATE of Wyoming! Since then Rick & Ibby have been ardent supporters and volunteers with that society - helping so many other children and parents. Wyoming Children’s Society, now celebrating their 102nd year, are honoring Rick and Ibby. To quote their invitation “Rick and Ibby Davis, Adoptive Parents, Adoption Advocates, Community Leaders, Dedicated Supporters”. Started over a century ago, WCS began with the arrival of Orphan Trains from the East Coast (“google” orphan trains) and is one of the oldest continuing non-profit adoption agencies in the U.S. Well deserved Rick & Ibby!

This painting was done by Ibby as a gift for a retiring volunteer. It has become the symbol of the Wyoming Children’s Society and appears on publicity and billboards in the State of Wyoming.
