The mission statement for SkillsUSA is: SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to make sure America has a skilled workforce. It helps each student excel. This partnership was very apparent this past week when students and teachers gathered on April 24-25-26 for the annual Wyoming SkillsUSA State Championships. Wyoming SkillsUSA celebrated its 22nd year as a state association at the 2017 Conference. Membership is currently 714 members from 26 high schools and 5 community colleges. SkillsUSA membership consists of high school and college students. The purpose of the Wyoming SkillsUSA championships is to allow students to showcase their technical skills and knowledge in addition to leadership abilities within the high tech fields that are so prevalent in industry today. Students gain a level of expertise in the “total learning realm” which enhances their opportunities to seek quality career level occupations and be prepared to live a quality life. They acquire skills and knowledge in the cutting edge of technology and work towards being a major contributor in the work force of tomorrow. Business and industry representatives set up the contests and are judges of the projects. This connection allows business and industry to actually see what students are learning and provide input to the instruction. Wyoming SkillsUSA participation in both state and national events has been exceptional. Over 500 students and advisors registered for the 2017 state competition. From the state winners, about100 people will serve as the state delegation to the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville this June. SkillsUSA awards only 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each contest and Wyoming students do very well at the national level. Wyoming SkillsUSA would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the many teachers and business and industry representatives that volunteered many man hours to set up and run the contests. Donations were also received from businesses in order for the students to have the supplies needed to complete their projects. This includes:
Community Colleges – t-shirt sponsor
Capitol Lumber in Cheyenne – Wood for Carpentry and Cabinet Making Contests
JC Penney Salon – Casper -- Cosmetology
Lincoln Electric – Welding Contests
Kelly Walsh High School – Welding, and Culinary contests
Cloud Peak Mining – Welding Fabrication
Norco – Welding
Air National Guard
Casper and Gillette College
McMurry Training Center
Best wishes and Good Luck to all of our National Qualifiers during their competition in June! Submitted by: Toni Decklever, Wyoming SkillsUSA State Director

To prepare for competition, students take classes in Marketing and Management, practice solving and presenting business case problems, and study hundreds of business related competencies. Students must study the general areas of marketing and management as well as area specific competencies. No clues are given out ahead of time about the scenarios. In competition, a student may be asked to analyze businesses’ declining sales and make recommendations to improve sales and obtain a larger market share for the company. Students are challenged with case problems ranging from planning merchandising budgets to designing creative
advertising campaigns. Students present their solutions to judges who not only listen to the presentations, but actively participate in the “role playing” scenario. Students are judged on a specific set of competencies for each case problem. In addition, each student takes a 100 question comprehensive test corresponding to their competitive area. Students are given between 10 - 30 minutes to solve a management case problem and 10 - 15 minutes to present their solution to a group of judges. Students do not know what the case problems will involve ahead of time; therefore they must be prepared for many different types of scenarios. They are not allowed to refer to any resource material. In
addition to the case problems, competitors take a comprehensive test covering a wide range of business competencies in their particular area of competition. Each year more than 210,000 DECA members, from around the world, participate at local school or district competitions. Students refine their skills and move on to their state conferences, from which roughly 20,000 students earn the right to compete at DECA’s International Career Development Conference. Tourism Team Decision Making.
Recognized as Top Performers were Ryan McManamen, Laramie High School, Marketing Cluster Exam; Dawson Murphy, Campbell County High School, Hospitality Cluster Exam; and Anna Muzzarelli, Campbell County High School, Marketing Communication Series, Emotional Intelligence Role Play.
In addition to being Top Ten finalists, Breier and

The Wyoming FBLA State Leadership Conference was held March 16-18 in Cheyenne at the Radisson, LCCC, and Cheyenne Hills Church with 690 members, advisers, and guests from 34 schools attending. The 2 1/2-day conference included keynote speaker, Laymon Hicks, 60 competitive events, a variety of workshops, college exhibits, two social events, and the Closing Awards Session which was live-streamed for the first time this year!
Thursday night’s social event and fundraiser was a Just Dance 4 Soldiers’ Tournament. The Wyoming National Guard continues to be a great partnership as FBLA was able to send care packages to two units of deployed troops and provide “angels” for the GUARDian Angels program again at Christmas. The Just Dance 4 Soldiers’ Tournament raised money to be used for shipping costs of care packages.
As a result of State Leadership Conference competition, 334 members, advisers, and guests
representing 29 high schools will be traveling to the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, June 29-July 3. Good luck competitors!
FBLA and DECA Will Join Forces for a Day of
Leadership
For the 2nd year, the Wyoming FBLA Fall Leadership Conference and the Wyoming DECA Marketing and Entrepreneurship Conference will be held jointly on Tuesday, October 3, at the Casper Parkway Plaza. The one-day conference will include a motivational keynote speaker; four rounds of workshops intended to build personal leadership skills, entrepreneurship skills, and chapter building skills; practice role-playing completion for DECA, and a Battle for Babies competition for FBLA to raise money for the March of Dimes.
Student workshops will include community service opportunities, job interviewing skills, dressing
for success, rewards and recognition information for each organization, running for state officer positions, college planning, using social media to promote the organizations, preparing for state conference competition, and more.
Anyone interested in FBLA in your high school or middle school or DECA in your high school is invited to attend with or without students. If you are interested in more information about either Wyoming FBLA or Wyoming DECA, you are encouraged to contact Barb Frates at [email protected] or [email protected] for details. October 3 would be a great chance for you to learn more about what FBLA and DECA are doing for students and what these organizations can do to enhance your business education and marketing programs in your district.
