Westside Little League Sign-ups Start January 7, 2008

The Westside Little League has announced registration sign-ups for ages 5 to 12 beginning Monday, January 7 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Chevron Valley Credit Union in Taft. Additional registration dates are Wednesday, January 9th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, January 12, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday, January 14 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. You can download a registration at www.taftwestsidelittleleague.org and fill out the form before arriving for registration. You must also bring a copy of a birth certificate and tetanus shot record with your registration. No abstracts or birth or passports will be accepted. Rotary Super Bowl Saturday Youth Fund Raiser Pancake Breakfast February 2, 2008

Taft Rotary will sponsor a pancake breakfast on Saturday, February 2nd to help any WestSide youth organization to raise funds for their activities. Any youth group on the West Side is invited to participate. This includes Taft, Maricopa, Fellows, McKittrick, Derby Acres, Valley Acres, Dustin Acres or Tupman. The youth groups will be responsible for selling tickets and will receive all proceeds from their ticket sales after the pancake breakfast. Youth groups can contact Julie Franks at State Farm Insurance, 526 Center St. (765-7158) Clint Deckert (Day 765-7960 or evening 763-1824), Brock McMurray (763-7811), Ray Hatch (289-0176), Roland

Youth groups are asked to help serve at the pancake breakfast. It will run from 7 AM until 11 AM on the Saturday before the Super Bowl February 3, 2007 at the Taft Union High School cafeteria. One of the Taft Rotary’s goals is to support great youth activities on the West Side. Any organized youth group can sell tickets. The Rotary Club of Taft does not limit you on the number of tickets you sell. Sell as many as you can!!!!

The Wildlands Conservancy hosted a celebration of 100,000

children served at the Wind Wolves Preserve October 11. The

conservancy has now provided free outdoor education programs to

over 100,000 children.

Located just outside of Maricopa off highway 166, the Wind Wolves

preserve is the largest nonprofit wildlife preserve on the west coast

and is home to elk, deer, bear, antelope, mountain lions, bobcats,

golden eagles, and other birds of prey.

The event was attended by Fourth District Supervisor Ray Watson

along with representatives from the Wildlands Conservancy.

Taft Turkey Memories

The turkey picture on the front of the last (Thanksgiving Issue) paper brought back my memories of our first Christmas in Taft at 211 E. Woodrow in 1950. I needed a large turkey for many family members who were coming in four days. With a small kitchen but a large gas oven I felt secure in get-ting a live one up on F. Street. A man and wife raised them to sell so when I heard this I went up and bought. It had to be dressed at Lucky’s Meat Market on Harrison and Ash in Ford City. When I picked it up it dressed out at 35 pounds and we did eat on it for four days. The couple who sold them I be-lieve started with a B. Maybe some-one else remembers getting a turkey from them. At that time our kitchen wasn’t big enough to eat in so we made do with boards and boxes in the living room for we had very little furniture. In 1955 we enlarged our kitchen and could seat 12 around the table. I have lots of good memories of Taft and the great people I’ve known and supported the A & B Radiator Shop. Sincerely, Doris Artz

Farewell Gary Dabbs . . .

Stray Dogs of Taft

I’m sure most people are aware of the many stray dogs that are roaming loose on our streets. I can spot four or five stray dogs on any given day. Some of these dogs are purposely let loose because the owners simply did not want them any more, some manage to get out of their yard, and some owners allow their dogs

to run loose. The streets can be a dangerous place for a stray dog. I once saw a man throwing rocks at one, as it strolled by. And of course, they are always at risk of being run over. If you have a dog that you no longer want, or cannot keep, please try to find it a good home. If you take the dog to the pound, it will be killed after five days. Simply dumping the dog; to abandon it with no food, water or shelter is the cruelest thing a person can do, especially during the winter months, when the temperatures can fall below freezing. A dog can easily freeze to death in those temperatures. If you are thinking of getting a dog, please consider the following: Be financially prepared to take the dog to the veterinarian if it gets hurt, or becomes ill. You will also need to get the dog its shots; rabies and distemper are most important. If you have a yard, be sure it’s secure so the dog doesn’t get out. You will also need to have the dog neutered; there are too many unwanted dogs in the world not to have this done. The cost of neutering varies according to its size, and what clinic you take it to. Financial assistance is available to those who need it. You should also get a dog tag for the dog, so that if it gets away from you and becomes lost, whoever finds it can get in touch with you. So please consider these things if you are thinking of getting a dog. The right actions could mean saving the life of a dog, and the reduction of the number of stray dogs on our streets.

Last week the city of Taft bid a fond farewell to Public Works Director Gary Dabbs, who has finally chosen to retire after nearly 20 years working for the city of Taft. Dabbs began his tenure in Taft in 1988 as a maintenance worker, and made his way through the ranks over the years working as an Equipment Operator, Public Works Foreman, and finally Public Works Director.

In ‘06 Dabbs dutifully stepped up and filled the shoes of the missing City Manager, acting as Interim City Manager from April until November of ‘06, when current City Manager Bob Gorson took over. Now that Dabbs has some more free time, how will Gary be spending his days? According

to one city employee, “The poor guy could use a vacation.” We wish you well, Gary, and hope the best for you in your retirement years. We’ll probably still be seeing Gary at the city council meetings, just like when he was on staff. Knowing Gary, he just won’t be able to stay away...

Taft Camera Club Elect New Officers

On December 11, 2007, members of the Taft Camera Club met for the final meeting of 2007 by electing new officers. Kathy Mize was elected Presi-dent and will assume her new duties at their first meeting on January 8, 2008. Ed Mize was elected as Secretary-Treasurer. Bob Foreman was presented with the 2007 Annual Perpetual Award, Color Division.

The Taft Camera Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month except for June, July, and August (due to heat and vaca-tions) at 7:30 PM in the Com-munity Room at the Chevron Valley Credit Union. Members enjoy sharing their hobby, having photography-based field trips and sponsoring exhibitions and competitions. More informa-tion can be seen at their web site, www.taftcameraclub.org.

Taft High School Board Moves Up Meeting Times

The Taft Union High School Board of Trustees voted unani-mously to moves its regular meeting time up an hour from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. The decision was

News Briefsmade at the meeting Dec. 10 and takes effect with the next regular month. The board gen-erally meets the third Monday of each month. In January the third Monday is the Martin Lu-ther King Jr. holiday so trustees will meet the next night, Tues-day, Jan. 22. The board also voted to make Jeremy Gregory the board presi-dent, replacing Rick Twissel-man, and picked Janice Ashley as secretary, replacing Gregory. The impetus for the time change was Gregory’s work schedule. He works as a deputy sheriff on the night shift, so he was faced with having to leave school board meetings early. But all the board members agreed that the earlier start time should be positive for everyone involved, particularly the com-munity. “We all wanted it,” Superin-tendent Curt Dubost explained. “It works for all of us. If we

Seeing is believing. 417 Asher Street (above-before) in South Taft just a few weeks ago before Westside Waste Management volunteered to clean up what some neighbors called an atrocity. The property had been red tagged as uninhabitable by Kern County Code Enforcement but remained as it looks above until Precision Towing of Taft voluntarily removed three abandoned vehicles from the backyard and Westside Waste Management cleared the property (below-after) of the dangerously attractive nuisance structure and trash. Neighbors still complain that other structures like 417 Asher continue to plague South Taft, Ford City and other unincorporated areas of the county.

By now you’ve probably noticed the letter grades displayed in windows of restaurants in the city of Taft and Kern County.

This new grading system, which the county has been in the process of implementing since July of ‘07, assigns a point value to each category of deductions, then subtracts the total point value of deductions from 100. A letter grade is then assigned based on the score, in much the same way a school teacher grades an assignment. 100-90 represents an A, 89-80 a B, and 79-75 a C. Director Matt Constantine says the county decided

to implement the grading system after becoming familiar with a research study published by the Journal of

Environmental Health that linked a 13 percent decrease in food-borne

illness in LA County to the advent of the food grading system there. “We decided if it lessens the chances of that happening then it’s

Taft Restaurants Get An “A”a good idea,” said Constantine. “...Most importantly it makes it easier for the public to make informed choices about where they’re going to get their food and eat their meals.” The grades are being assigned not only to restaurants, but also to concession stands, school cafeterias, and “anyone who sells food at a retail level,” says Constantine. Approved by the board of supervisors in late 2006, the grading system became effective in July 2007 and is currently

making its way through the county. While state law does not dictate a particular level of inspection frequency, Constantine says ideally food providers receive one visit per year, so it may be July 2008 before every restaurant in Taft and the surrounding areas has been assigned a grade. All visits from food inspectors are surprise visits, with inspections generally lasting an hour, “although some can take all day,” according to Constantine. “What we look for is how the food travels from the back door to the customer. Within that cycle, inspectors are especially mindful of what the county calls “risky behavior.” These are the major violations the Center for Disease Control says are likely to spread food-borne illness, like food temperature control issues and cross contamination. “The most common one we find,” says Constantine, “is improperly cooling foods that

need to be cooled. Cold foods need to be below 41 degrees.” If inspectors encounter a major violation they do have the authority to shut down the restaurant on the spot; however, usually the inspectors will make the facility aware of the problem and inform the restaurant owner or manager of their intent to return and make sure the problem has been corrected. Inspectors will return shortly thereafter, usually later that same day, to make sure the violation has been corrected. If the problem still hasn’t been addressed the county again has the authority to shut the business down until the issue is resolved.

Despite the seriousness of these major violations, a restaurant or food provider can have up to two major violations and still receive an A grade, assuming the violations are taken care of by the subsequent visit. “The scoring is somewhat generous in that approach,” says Constantine, “however, if we encounter a major violation and it’s not taken care of we will shut that place down until it is.” Conversely, a retail food provider can receive a B grade with no major violations, if enough non-critical issues add up against their score. While one inspection per restaurant per year is ideal, frequency is determined by the amount of risky behavior the county inspectors find upon inspection. More risky behaviors will result in more frequent subsequent inspections. The inspectors take a high-tech approach to the journaling and storage of the data as they conduct the inspections,

While the grading system has caused a little extra work for the Department of Environmental Health in its inception, Constantine doesn’t expect it will come at any significant additional costs to the county because the job hasn’t changed; rather, the results of the inspection are now more visible to the public. In order to become a truly county-wide program, the grading ordinance must be adopted by the individual incorporated cities within the county before the county can start issuing the grades to the retail food providers within those city limits. According to Constantine, Taft was one of the first to adopt a resolution in support of the ordinance, while Maricopa, Arvin, Shafter, and Delano have yet to take action. Maricopa city leaders said they intend to adopt the ordinance at a future meeting of the Maricopa City Council.

A Walk of Faith Picture this . . . You hike up a five mile peak and reach the top. You turn your head and can look from the top of the mountain for days. You see all the pretty lights and other things and see how far you are from the ground. You realize that you are pretty far up. With this picture in mind, does faith say jump off the peak and believe that you are going to live? I don’t believe so. I believe faith is simply trusting God and using common sense. When you sit at a computer you are at peace that it is going to meet your needs. When we go to God and his Word faith believes what his Word says and acts according to what it says by faith. You are at peace about it and act upon it. When you learned how to use a computer you did as you were taught and it works for you. Hebrews 11:1 says it the best, which says “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” There have been many times in my life where I have just simply trusted God; trusting that he would meet my needs and this is not a thing that we do here and there. This has always paid of. Our whole relationship with God is based on faith. When you came to Christ it was a great act of faith and trust in him. You believed that he existed,

that he was the Son of God and through him you had access to God. Our whole life is a life of faith and trust in him. Some days it may not be as easy as others, but we’re to still live by faith not by what we see. The enemy will try his best to remind us of all the negativism, but that’s when we are to continue to trust that God has our back and is going to take care of us like he did when everything seemed peachy. Something else I really want to point out is faith is not denial. When you have a health problem we are to believe that God has us taken care of and we’re to believe his word, but we are not to pretend it’s not there. There is a balance. God has so many promises that talk about how he has us taken care of, but we tend to worry to the point of frustration. The enemy will try his best to bring your weaknesses to life and he knows your pressure points. So we have got to know that we are winners through him who loves us and not let the enemy have any credit. I was talking to a lady the other day and she said that “we are human and that there are going to be days where you wake up and life just seems depressing, but it matter of what we do with it.” This is so to true also. Faith in Christ will carry one when all else seems to look hopeless.

A Great Act of Faith

Following up on the story of Noah in Genesis 6-9 we find a man that was led by God. His heart was right before God and he heeded to the voice of God. He was in tune with God to the point of faith coming to action. At this time the whole earth was filled with evil. The hearts of all people were wicked. The Lord was even grieved over all the evil, but there was the heart of one man that got his attention and that was Noah. The Lord was very pleased with his heart toward him. In verses 7-8 of chapter 6 it says “So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry I have made them.” But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” At this time the Lord was about to prepare a man’s heart. There was a flood going to happen do to the evil of man’s heart and all mankind and animals were going to be destroyed. Thank God for his grace that we have now for forgiveness of our sin. Anyway, the Lord told Noah to prepare an ark to save himself, his wife, his children and their wives along with so many of ever animal female and male. In chapter 6:13-7:24 God told Noah detail to detail on what to do and Noah listened willingly with faith that called for action. He built an ark for so many years while trusting God was leading him to do it. Could you imagine what he was going through? Everyone probably thought he was crazy and different, but he still chose to walk by faith. So basically God revealed the flood to him and by faith he received what the Lord had said to him and acted upon it. He built the ark that saved his life and several others that God told him to put on the ark with him. And all the other ones that were not put on the ark died from the flood. When Noah had knew that amounts of water dried from the earth he removed the covering from the ark after being in it for 1 year and ten days. God saved them as he said he would. In Chapter 9:1 of the Amplified Bible it says “And God pronounced a blessing upon Noah and his sons and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. The subject of the story is a simple act of obedience in faith with action is a walk of faith that will save the very life of one and many others. We are in a walk that requires faith and trust in God or it is not going to work out properly. Noah listened to God and had faith in what was not there. He had faith in the unseen. He seen the picture in vision from God, but by faith he seen it in real life. You will also noticed

that Noah’s heart was right and when your heart is right you can’t help but to have faith in God because your convictions line up with his Word and you want to actually follow him with a heart of obedience. You may not be able to see it with your physical eye, but we are to walk by faith in hope and see it with our spiritual eye by envisioning it and bringing it to real life physically by faith. When you want to make something and really want it most of the time one sees a picture and they bring it forth trusting that it is going to work out properly with common since. I believe that this word has been a great encouragement to you. Be encouraged to walk by faith and listen to God and his word for we are in a walk that is to be by faith. I pray that your convictions become your daily life actions of faith and trust in our true father and I encourage you to give it all you got. Without a doubt you will see the fruit of the Lord come forth in your life by trusting him and not trying to direct it yourself. Be Blessed In God’s Rich Loving Mercy!
