Just like its economy, Qatar’s electricity sector is

experiencing double-digit growth rates. In the West

Bay area, a newly developed neighborhood of Qatar’s

capital Doha, Siemens delivered the power supply for

more than 100 high-rise buildings. To meet the particular

challenge of inte grating the sub stations into the sur-

rounding cityscape, Siemens developed a bespoke

architectural solution that fully satisfied the customer.

16

Within only 18 months, Siemens built and commissioned

two high-voltage substations for Kahramaa (Qatar General

Electricity and Water Corporation) that cover the 220-kV,

66-kV, and 11-kV voltage levels and another station at

the 66-kV/11-kV voltage levels. The substations, which

are equipped with compact and modular gas-insulated

Siemens switchgear, are perfectly integrated in the sur-

rounding area and virtually “invisible”.

The benefits for the customer:

The substations, that provide power to Kahramaa’s

customers, are considered to be the most advanced

and aesthetic constructed in Qatar from an electrical

and architectural point of view.

Siemens has already made several major contributions

to the development of Qatar’s energy infrastructure with

more than 1,200 switchgear bays in operation.

Dubai has seen spectacular growth and an economy

diversifying at a fast pace. The densely urbanized land-

scape of the city demands space-saving solutions that

maximize efficiency. Focusing on a reduced footprint,

Siemens designed and built Car Complex, a 400-kV high-

voltage substation that uses advanced gas-insulated

switchgear technology. Small but powerful, this

sub station supplies electricity not only to Dubai Inter-

national Airport but also to several residential and

commercial areas.

Reduced footprint

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)

appointed Siemens to perform all supply, installation,

testing and commissioning tasks as well as associated

work of the 400/132-kV Car Complex substation. The

scope of supply included 12 bays of 400-kV as well as

29 bays of 132-kV gas-insulated switchgear, four 505 MVA

power transformers, and three 40 MVAr shunt reactors.

The benefits for the customer:

Compared to substations with air-insulated switchgear,

a substation with gas-insulated technology requires only

one-quarter of the space. Siemens’ compact GIS solutions

help the client to provide reliable power and minimizes

space requirements as well as maintenance efforts.

Siemens’ expertise in project management and engineer-

ing, backed by proven methods and processes, supported

the successful delivery of more than 850 high-voltage

switchgear bays in Dubai.

Estimates are that Saudi Arabia’s population will increase

from 28 million to 40 million within the next ten years.

To meet the significant rise in power demand, the installed

capacity will have to double. It will be necessary to build

new power plants with a combined capacity of at least

4,000 MW every year. This is why the Kingdom is making

major investments in the expansion of power-supply

capacities.
