• 261 (eligible) proposals were received for all ESF scientific units
• 115 were relevant to the SCSS. • The pre-filtering group selected 64
for further evaluation (89 with addition of trans-committee proposals) which were assessed by external referees

Advisory Group Work
• Each member was allocated 12-15 proposals
• The group focused on the highest ranked proposals, according to referee grades and with ranking from advisory group members
• The proposals with the top rating of 5 were split into the « top 10 » most deserving and 6 very deserving
• A further 15 proposals with the grade of 4 were ranked

The next steps
• The SCSS is asked to endorse the recommended list
• At the ESF the workshops are allocated according to– Available funding– Committee priorities– The more trans-committee
proposals are awarded, the more workshops on the recommended list

Further input from SCSS
Once the list of awarded workshops is known, members are asked to volunteer to act as
rapporteur. This involves making a presentation on ESF and SCSS at the workshop and
writing a short report

6. General Conclusion/Comments by Standing Committee on new procedure:Continue with process but put greater emphasis on pre-filtering step. The pre-filtering step is useful in weeding out poor proposals thus reducing the burden on referees.
