Background• In Mozambique, more women than men know

their HIV status (31% vs17%) according the INSIDA Report, 2009.

• In March 2012, ESTRADAS project introduced the SafeTstop Strategy to increase access and promote counseling and testing (HTC) services for men.

• SafeTstop is a community managed facility which provides popular indoor games, internet, TV and HTC which are friendly, confidential and convenient to men.

Methods • Quantitative monitoring data collected on clients

who visited the “safeTstop” site in Munhava, Beira City, Mozambique, from March 2012 to December 2013.

• Analyzed data on HIV uptake and status by gender.

• Examined changes in male demand and access to HTC.

Key Findings• 5,685 individuals visited the Munhava safeTstop site (March 2012 to

December 2013).

• 4464 individuals were counseled and tested, and received their test results: 3,007 (67.4%) Males and 1,467 (32.6%) Females.

• Male uptake of HTC increased from 23.6% (710) in 2012 to 76.4% (2,297) in 2013.

• The % positive results was higher among women (22.6%) than men (about 10.0%).

Conclusion• Male uptake of HTC increased over time

suggesting that providing male-targeted interventions is an effective approach to reach more men with HTC services.

• To reach more men, and increase demand, HTC services must be male-friendly, confidential, and ensure ease of access.
