Idaho Codes §33-3720 and 33-3717B(7) authorize the State Board of Education to provide access to the WWAMI medical education program at the University of Idaho and the University of Washington School of Medicine.

UW Medicine: Meeting the health care and workforce needs of our region, especially by recognizing the importance of primary care and providing service to underserved populations.

The University of Idaho is responsible for regional medical education programs in which the state of Idaho participates.

UW Medicine is ranked #1 in U.S. for primary care training (19 years as #1)

UW Medicine is ranked #1 in U.S. for public university NIH research funding (2nd to Harvard - #1 private school)

UW Medicine’s operating revenue in FY12 was $3.6 Billion.

Each month, we have 40-50 WWAMI medical students training in Idaho clinics and communities.

Total active physicians in Idaho: 2872 23.3% (670) over age 60 86% (2474) over age 40

2003 – Idaho Rural Physician Incentive Program created by legislature

All Idaho-supported medical students pay annual fee into endowment (4% of support)

Program awards up to $50K over 4 years Eligible physicians: family, internal medicine,

pediatrics, general psychiatry, general surgery in underserved/rural areas

Since 2010 – awards made to recruit/retain physicians in Emmett, Jerome, St. Anthony, Blackfoot, Pocatello, Montpelier, Caldwell, & Nampa.

Medical licensing exam pass rate: 100% (national – 93%)

Rate of return: 50% (national – 41%) Return on Investment: 73% (all WWAMI

graduates practicing in Idaho) Graduates selecting primary care specialties:

A structured, rural training program that starts with selection, provides a four-year medical education connection between rural communities and medical students, and supports rural physicians in Idaho.

Select Idaho students with a background or interest in rural/underserved medicine

Educate students through 4 years of integrated classroom and rural clinical training experiences in Idaho and WWAMI region.

Prepare them for residencies with a primary care & rural/underserved emphasis

Recruit and/or retain them in Idaho in our rural and underserved communities
