Read about ephemeral art on the slides and/or in the text below. Then respond to the questions on the last page..

Andy Goldsworthy is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist who produces site-specific sculptures and land art situated in natural and urban settings. He lives and works in Scotland.

The word ephemeral is an adjective describing something as lasting for a very short time.

There are many forms of ephemeral art, from sculpture to performance, but the term is usually used to describe a work of art that only occurs once, like a happening, or installation, and cannot be embodied in any lasting object to be shown in a museum or gallery.

Ephemeral art first came to prominence in the 1960s with the Fluxus group, when artists like Joseph Beuys were interested in creating works of art that existed outside the gallery and museum structure and had no financial worth. Happenings, performances and sound sculptures were all part of ephemeral art, as were flyers and cheap mass-produced items that carried subversive messages out into the world.

Today many artists who work in this style are interested in nature or environment. They often use “found objects” which could be just bits of junk, and natural materials that will not be permanent. Sometimes the object or materials suggest an idea as the artist looks and considers closely things which others may simply ignore. As with creative work of all kinds these artworks try to make the viewer perceive something in a new way.

With new technology the documentation of these art works is more important than ever. A temporary object made from fragile or disintegrating materials lives on in multimedia formats, and may continue to interest and inspire viewers for a very long time especially through photos and video.

Ephemeral artworks can be surprisingly realistic or completely non - objective. It is the artist’s response to a unusual material that causes idea to work.

After you view the work of Andy Goldsworthy and other artists like him go outside and look around. Maybe you will notice a spot or some stuff that inspires you to create an ephemeral art work. If you are not sure where to start just begin collecting some found objects or interesting nature materials such as moss, twiggs, stones. Find a spot where you can “play” with your materials, try arranging a kind of picture or build a structure. A very direct way to start is just take a handful of pebbles or twigs and create some lines or shapes on a surface. Add more ideas as they occur to you. How can you add color or value? When you are satisfied with your creation take a photo and upload it to share with the class.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Think about and respond to the questions on the next page, then go outside and make your own ephemeral artwork. (Wait for a nice day, and stay safely in the area of your home)

Submit your answers and a photo of your artwork to me via (teacher directions for submission on your platform of choice). If you can’t make a photo, write a short description of your experience and what you made.
