Team: Editorial: Kimberley Salmassian, Adrian Mills Editor: Kimberley Salmassian is Spring saw the launch of the Wimbledon Village Farmer’s Market. ‘Fresh & Local’ (within 30 miles where possible) is the theme and around 90% of stall holders are ‘primary’ producers – meaning they produce the product they’re selling themselves. Supported by the Wimbledon Village Business Association and various local residents’ associations, this is very much a community enterprise, focusing on addressing local needs. e market has already proved hugely popular – get there early to get your fruit and veg! – and organiser, Simon Greig, is always on hand to get your feedback. Of course, we need to support these initiatives for them to thrive. If the market is not already a part of your weekly shop, get yourself down there this Sunday to see it for yourself. With fruit, veg, fresh meat, fish and eggs, cheese, artisan breads, cakes and savoury baked goods alongside a variety of hot food stands, there is something for everyone – including vegetarians, vegans and the gluten intolerant! Open Sundays, 10am - 2pm It’s here - the buzz, the excitement, the greatest tennis tournament in the World has arrived! Tennis Window Competition Every year Wimbledon Village embraces this special fortnight with its very own ‘sporting’ spectacle. e Tennis window competition started as a small event some seven years ago by events and business development consultant, Kimberley Salmassian, when she was a local shop owner, and it has now become part of the Village festival. It is fought over just as competitively as the tennis finals themselves. Dozens of businesses, ranging from restaurants, bars, jewellers, delicatessens, horse stables and estate agents, to name but a few, enter in the hope of victory. Ten independent judges are carefully sourced each year, to select ten prize winners from as many as 70 participating businesses, and the prize selection is fantastic. Proudly Supported by All England Lawn Tennis Club e event is supported by the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), who provide Centre Court tickets for the First Prize winners, and it has now turned into one of the highlights for residents, visitors and players alike. Numerous famous names spend their days and evenings strolling through the High Street admiring the creativity, ingenuity and, on occasion, the madness of the window designs and displays! Visitors have commented, time and again, that no other sporting tournament in the world is embraced by local businesses in the same creative and quirky way, and that those living and working in SW19 should be justifiably proud of what a quintessential English Village achieves by expressing such a tremendous community spirit. Last year, Wimbledon Village featured around the World, from local and national press coverage to Vote for Your Favourite Window! You can vote for your favourite window, from Monday 24 June, by ‘liking’ it in the Wimbledon Village Windows 2019 album on the WVEvents Facebook page. Voting closes Sunday 7 July 2019. #WimbledonVillageWindows Pam Shriver interviews Kimberley Salmassian, competition organiser, for ESPN the astounding television viewing figures of various global media companies. Hundreds of thousands of people engaged on local social media. Be Part of the Story So please join in. Be part of what is, for the coming weeks, the greatest sporting event in the World. As a journalist friend pointed out, football is the national game but we have only had one World Cup here in England, in 1966. So we should celebrate that we have the World Cup of tennis on our doorstep every single year, and that the eyes of sports lovers everywhere are clearly focused on SW19 again. So let the competition begin – and may the best tennis players and creative displays win! I look forward to seeing you in the Village and remember to like, post and vote for your favourite windows.
