HiStory of Breaking new groundWinston-Salem State University has evolved from humble beginnings in September 1892 as Slater Industrial Academy, a one-room school with 25 pupils and one teacher.

In 1925, the school’s leadership in training elementary school teachers was rewarded by the General Assembly of North Carolina with a new charter and the authority to confer degrees, making it the first black institution in the United States to grant elementary education degrees. The school changed its name to Winston-Salem Teachers College.

A Nursing School was added in 1953, with authority to grant a bachelor of science degree. In 1963, the name was changed to Winston-Salem State College, and in 1969 to Winston-Salem State University. The university became one of the 17 member institutions of the University of North Carolina in 1972.

“I turned down other great schools to come to

Winston-Salem State because I decided the

atmosphere felt better here. The people I met were

friendly and approachable — and the residence halls

are the nicest ones I’ve seen.

I’ve truly enjoyed the opportunities the university has

bestowed on me along with the social environment

that has allowed me to grow and develop.

The students who sit in their rooms because they don’t

know anyone are always the ones who tell you that

college is boring. You just have to knock

I came to school interested in teaching, but I said I

wanted to go to medical school. My father died in my

senior year of high school of sarcoidosis and pneu-

monia, so I wanted to work in the medical field and

improve the treatment of patients. Over the last few

years I’ve realized that my passion is in teaching rather

than medicine, and I’ve realized there are ways to

incorporate both interests.

SCHool of HealtH SCienCeSWe offer bachelor’s of science degrees in clinical laboratory science and nursing. Clinical laboratory science prepares students in labo-ratory methodologies and related technologies essential to the perfor-mance of diagnostic, research, and forensic investigations and includes an Internet-based outreach program for working adults. The nursing program includes the traditional bachelor’s of science in nursing degree (BSN), a registered nurse-to-BSN option offered at nine locations off-campus, an option for licensed practical nurses seeking a BSN, and an option for certified emergency medical technicians/paramedics to obtain a BSN. A 13-month accelerated BSN op-tion allows students with bachelor’s degrees in other majors to obtain a BSN. Funded by North Carolina Baptist Hospital, the option requires students to work three years as a staff nurse at the hospital after completion of the program. The school also offers master’s of science degrees in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and nursing, with many community partnerships enhancing the learning experience. The two-year nursing master’s program is designed with adult learners’ needs in mind.

to help them be successful. And they are

successful – we have a very high rate, 94 percent,

of students passing the NCLEX nursing board.

helps their critical thinking skills. When they

Show off your special charms in a talent show or karaoke night. Meet like-minded students in your major’s pre-professional club. With close to 100 student organizations, you’ll find at least one that meets your interests and sharpens your leadership skills.

Our athletic history includes many legendary figures: basketball coach Clarence “Big House” Gaines and athletic greats such as Earl ‘the Pearl’ Monroe, Timmy Newsome, Yancey Thigpen, Oronde Gadsden and a host of other NBA and NFL legends. Our history in the NCAA is full of team accolades and conference titles and is capped by the 1967 NCAA National Basketball Championship.

All rooms are furnished and wired for telephone, cable TV, and the Internet, often with wireless Internet access.

First-year students often start out in smaller residence halls with one roommate, a community kitchen and lounges, and a floor full of potential new friends. Upper-level students tend to opt for the apartment-style suites, where anywhere from two to eight students share a living room, kitchen, and semi-private bathrooms.

All residence halls operate on a “living and learning” concept. Students are challenged to improve interpersonal skills as they learn to live peacefully and to interact with others from different cultural, regional, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Students enjoy a healthy range of adult freedom, yet each residence is staffed with professionals and students trained to offer support, resources, plan activities, and address residents’ concerns. Their

goal: to assist residents in creating communities that are inclusive, engaging, and caring.

It’s never too early to start looking. Career services staff members encourage first-year students to visit the office, meet with staff members, and sign up for a workshop or seminar.

“I was the only black

person in our group (organized by

UNC-Wilmington) and the only black American

that most Ubedians had met. The university students

were fascinated. They don’t see many African Americans in

the media, so they were very curious. Most days I was sent to

a different class to talk about being black in America. I got to offer

some history and perspective, and to ask them about their perspective

[on race, American culture, and African Americans].

From an educational perspective, the trip made me refocus on my

education. You realize the opportunities we have in the United States, to

choose what we want to do. In Spain, young people know they will be

following in their parents’ footsteps, they don’t have many choices.

Living in another culture helps you step out of your

box and appreciate who you are as an American.

It was a privilege.”

here. We really emphasize one-on-one

interactions. Faculty here have time to assist

students as needed.

WSSU faculty are very capable and hard-

working. They’re here because teaching

comes first to them.

We see a lot of collaboration between

students, both formally in their pre-major

clubs and informally. Our students tend to

support each other.

Our department has seen the largest

increase in enrollment in the last five years,

with more and more incoming freshmen

choosing therapeutic recreation. In general,

more students are leaning toward health

occupations and clinical fields.

I also teach yoga, which has been really

popular. Students find the class is a good

way to get started in an exercise program.”
