Previous generations had a strong ethic of not boasting about personal achievement but social media and reality TV now drive a culture of self-promotion, even where there is absolutely no real underlying achievement. There is even an entire industry built around handing out awards at expensive dinners. Another spin-off of this self-promotion culture is the trend to publicly campaign for the latest populist cause without having any real commitment or empathy for it. This is also known as being politically correct. Whether it is celebrating Madiba s birthday, saving the rhino, or standing up against corruption, it is a sad reality that many champion these causes not because they truly believe in it but rather for increasing social standing and a feeling of personal awesomeness. So should we be despondent about the apparent lack of genuine awesomeness? I do not believe so just dont look for it amongst too many public personas but rather around your- self amongst everyday people who quietly rise above their challenges to achieve beyond their circumstances. Our school and community are full of individuals who strive to achieve, who are committed to facing challenges head on, who are shining examples of what being truly awesome is all about. Let us appreciate these champions. Ultimately it s up to every one of us how we be awesome! 42 Westville Road, Westville, 3629 Tel: 031 266 5218 Fax: 031 266 0094 [email protected] www.wsps.co.za A reminder to all parents that the Annual ParentsBudget Meeting will be held in the School Hall on Monday, 12 November at 18h30. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

“Individual awesomeness requires a personal achievement whilst keeping your feet firmly planted amongst the rest of the human race.” – Erik Venter

Achieving true individual awesomeness seems remarkably difficult as a person ’s sense of achievement is typically linked to an increasing ego and sense of social status … this obvi-ously disqualifies one from true awesomeness. Whether it is celebrating Madiba ’s birthday, saving the rhino, or standing up against corruption, it is a sad reality that many champion these causes not because they truly believe in it but rather for increasing social standing and a feeling of personal awesomeness. So should we be despondent about the apparent lack of genuine awesomeness? I do not believe so … just don’t look for it amongst too many public personas but rather around your-self amongst everyday people who quietly rise above their challenges to achieve beyond their circumstances. Our school and community are full of individuals who strive to achieve, who are committed to facing challenges head on, who are shining examples of what being truly awesome is all about. Let us appreciate these champions. Ultimately it ’s up to every one of us how we … be awesome!

THE ECR TOY STORY COLLECTION IS HERE!

WSPS is once again joining the thousands of east coasters who support the East Coast Radio Toy Story. ECR visited our school to motivate our children to make a difference in the life of a child in need. Our target is 800 toys and we have already had 115 toys donated by our children. The challenge is on – add a new toy to your shopping list and join the army of ECR Toy Story champi-ons

Thank you to all the parents who have supported the Swan Café at breaks and at the various school functions this year. Should you wish to help out by providing service behind the counter, please contact Mrs Stone on 0726253059 or email [email protected]

THE SWAN CAFÉ TUCKSHOP

Reminder: Please send your used plastic milk bottles, cooldrink cans, cereal/tea boxes and glass jars with lids to our recycling station each day. We are still looking for a few parent volunteers to join the “Go Green Team” and take our recycling projects forward. If you have a passion for our “Go Green” initiative, please contact Rozanna Stone on 0726253059 or email [email protected] to become involved.
