1. Where EGMUS came from

the necessity to continue LEG-work beyond the 3-years period (Leg stopped February 1999 and the new working group on cultural statistics strated only in March 2000)

the necessity to continue to use the knowhow and the experience of the experts involved in LEG-project as well as those meeting on a regular basis in Berlin and to work together

the necessity to bring together statistical and museum experts (an important deficiency in LEG-project)

the necessity to produce harmonised statistics of the musem sector

the necessity to establish a permanent group dealing with museum statistics

b) To harmonise these data with Eurostat needs, custom and practice as well as with those of UNESCO

c) To produce comparable cultural statistics on museums relevant to policy-making and policy-evaluation in Europe

d) To agree on common questions and definitions based on UNESCO framework

e) To agree on indicators and guidelines

f) To produce regularly data and tables by including relevant aspects of museums, e.g.: financing and expenditure, employment, participation, etc
