• The line of demarcation dividing the West Side and the East side is known as the “Sauerkraut curtain”, understood by most as Vine Street (SINCE THIS SEPARATION OF EAST AND WEST HAS BEEN AROUND LONGER THAN THE FREEWAYS)

• It’s home to an inscrutable way of life and ancient rituals, such as the Harvest Home Fair, West Fest, AND THE DELHI SKIRT GAME

• Some popular westside areas include: Cheviot, Delhi, Price Hill and Green Township

• The Westside claims to have invented DID INVENT cornhole

• Since 1912, all of Cincinnati’s police chiefs have called the west side home

• Ohio’s first prize-fight was held in Cheviot, in 1837

• LaRosa’s was founded on the west side. WE LOVE OUR LAROSA’S… OTHER THINGS WE LOVE INCLUDE SKYLINE, NOT GOLDSTAR (THIS IS LIKE COKE VS. PEPSI); PETE ROSE BELONGS IN THE HALL-OF-FAME

When two Cincinnatians meet for the first time, one will no doubt soon ask: “East Side or West Side?” Most agree the city's dividing line — at one time called the “Sauerkraut Curtain” — is Vine Street, placing neighborhoods and suburbs such as Price Hill, Westwood and Delhi Township on the West Side; Hyde Park, Oakley and Mariemont, among others, on the East.

According to stereotypes, West-Siders are mostly blue-collarworkers, devout Catholics of German or Italian heritage, who rarely move from their closely knit neighborhoods. East-Siders, many believe, are affluent professionals who pull up stakes and move about freely. (Some aren't even born in Cincinnati!)

Although West-Siders seem more loyal to their parishes, taverns and high schools, these perceptions are changing. And as far as which side is the wealthiest, a common saying goes: “West Siders have more money, but don't spend it, while East Siders have less money, but spend it.”

“When I was a Price Hill 7-year-old, the Berlin Wall went up in Germany. My dad, trying to explain in a way I could grasp, said it would be as if a great wall ran the length on Vine Street, dividing east from west Cincinnati. Uncrossable. Guards ready to shoot anyone who tried.

I missed the metaphor. It would be years before I realized there wasn't a wall down the middle of Vine Street. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1990, my childhood image was perfect for this series of cartoons. Having lived about an equal number of years on each side our ‘Wall,’ I felt qualified to go after our cultural differences.”
