Sound: In the video ‘hurt’ it is a reflection of Johnny Cash’s life; it shows he is now alone. In the lyrics it talks about remembering, hurt, loss and holes. The remembering is conventional as the footage of when he was young is a memory he still holds. The hurt is conventional as he seems very sad throughout the video, his eyes are dull, he is crying. The loss is conventional as he looks up at a picture of his mother, she isn’t around anymore. The term ‘the needle tears a hole’ is conventional as it talks about how empty he is, his emotions and loneliness in the video portray this. The focus on John shows that this video is him, alone and the lyrics talk of his lack of company too. The narrative of this video is purely about his life. Although Mr Cash is now a much respected man, it seems as though he doesn’t realise the good. Whenever John says about ‘my sweetest friend’ the camera focuses on someone close to him. The first time is a picture of his mother, the second is his wife. This allows us to see who he is referring too. When there are flashbacks to the footage of when John was younger, there is diegetic sound. This is conventional as it shows how confident and happy he was, and it simply tells us what is going on in this situation. These emotions are conventional for country music as it is reflecting his feelings through music which is what country music is based around. Camerawork: The close-ups on Johnny Cash allow us to see how his eyes are so very tired. This represents how he is tired of life, this also helps to represent his age. The inter cutting between the present and past allows the video to go to and from footage, of when he was younger. This represents his character in two different ways as we can see the difference from when he was younger and very violent in comparison to when he is old and frail. This is conventional for the country music genre because it is connecting with his emotions and expressing that to the audience. The wide shot of his wife shows how she looks over him and sees his sorrow. At this point in his life he was struggling with health issues. Back in older traditions a man would not want to be frail as it’s his responsibility to be the carer. This is conventional because country is about family and also can be about empathy. It shows him in his home at his weakest point in life, fighting the demons of his past and trying to repent before his death nears. Not every song can relate to everyone but if you are an empathetic person you can still engage with the emotion of the song. The different angles are conventional for a music video because it gives different views of the scene. Often when there is a shot of the artist it is high angle to make him appeal older and frail. This is to represent that he is connecting with the viewers and showing a conscious part of himself to them by telling his story. This is conventional for the genre as it explores heartache and regret is certainly that. Composition is used conventionally in most shots. But more particularly in the image to the left. It is the artist playing with a porch door showing his surroundings. The area is peaceful yet the song still holds so much emotion. This connotes that only when the mind is in a peaceful place can it think clearly. It also suggest he is now seeking refuge in the beauty of the earth and embracing it. This is conventional for country music because country fans always seek their sanity within the earth as they are mostly spiritual and stereotypically live in the country side. It also shows the raw emotion of the image at the fact that he is singing alone to try and relieve himself of his feelings. Country music is w
