What is an Artifact?

Artifact is a humanly created object. Example: Cars, manicured lawn

Cultural Artifacts- objects which tend to communicate and have meaning Example: Speeches, Books

Movies

Rhetorical Artifacts- seeks to persuade the audience Example: Poem, Play, Novel,

Movie, Photo, lecture, TV show

How does one Analyze an Artifact?

One analyzes an artifact by observing the strange, unusual qualities of the object. Find out the Who,

What, Where, and When

Then create an argument for the How and Why

What is an Argument?

An argument is presentation of one’s opinion, which differs from another's.

How does one Argue?

One argues by presenting both sides of an argument to further prove ones initial position on the topic.

The Formula:

A + B = C

opinion + opinion = your opinion / your argument

Practice

Get into small groups

Choose an artifact in the room

Describe it. Who, What, When, Where, Why?

Try and answer as many as these as you can from your artifact

Then create an argument

Prove the Argument

Take turns doing this!

Assignment

Find an artifact. Analyze it briefly by asking the Who, What When Where and Why?

Email me your ideas by Monday, May 2 (aka Next Monday)

I will give you a yes or a no on your artifacts. If you get a Yes, create a thesis from the information

which you know about your artifact If you get a No, resend me a new artifact and analyze it.

Email me a thesis by Monday, May 10

Then have a Rhetorical Analysis of your Artifact by Monday the May 16. IN FINAL FORM

Pathos, Ethos and Logos:

Pathos: persuading the audience by targeting emotions

Ethos: persuading the audience by targeting ethics

Logos: persuading the audience by using logical reasoning.

Targeting an Audience

Key: Make sure you appeal to your audience

Example: Audience love to fish, so make your presentation include aspects of fishing

Make sure you use Pathos, Ethos and Logos These assist in grabbing hold of the audience

Use bright colors Make the presentation interesting Include the audience

After watching 2 of the short clips from the prior page of notes, answer these questions: Is the video Convincing? Why? Why not? How are the speakers using pathos ethos, and

logos? How? How does using pathos, ethos, and logos,

create a persuasive argument? What would you do to make these arguments

more effective

If you do not finish this in class email me the answers by next Thursday.

Get Creative!

Get in groups.

Discuss the Answers from the previous exercise.

In your groups come up with a 25 min persuasive presentation. The goal is to make the presentation better than the one you watched. Take what you learned and make it into a presentation that is even more persuading.

Include: A written proposal of how you think you can make the presentations and

videos which you watched more effective. A power point / movie presentation which targets the audience, ultimately

getting there attention. Make sure to use Pathos, Ethos and logos Use color and size
