Tonight's Game
Wright State vs. IUPUI
The Wright State Raiders return to action after an 11-day holiday break with an 8-0 record through the 1980 portion of the schedule. Counting the consolation game of last year's NCAA tournament, WSU has now won nine straight games, one shy of the record set last season at the start of the schedule.
Coach Ralph Underhill is hopeful his roundballers don't come back from the holiday break with a case of the "slows" again this year. In each of the last two seasons, WSU started the January portion of the schedule slowly, losing to Akron (76-71) in 1978-79 and defeating Wilberforce (82-58) last year.
A victory tonight would put the Green and Gold in a position to set a new school record next Wednesday night at Indiana Central with 11 straight wins . Last year Central State snapped the 10-game winning streak and prevented WSU from a No. 1 ranking in the first Division II poll. The first poll this season will be released the week of January 9.
"Coming through the December schedule undefeated was a major accomplishment for this team," said Underhill. " It was probably the toughest month we have ever scheduled . The win over Eastern Illinois (81-73) showed how far we have come in the last year. We didn't play well, but still managed to defeat a good basketball team. Last year we probably would have lost that game."
The Metros of IUPUI entered this week's action with a 7-5 record . They played in the Tri-State Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, losing to Saginaw Valley in the first round while Tri-State played Kalamazoo in the other game. Second-year coach Mel Garland appears to have an improved team over last year's squad which finished with a 10-21 record and lost to Wright State in Indianapolis, 92-77.
All five starters for the Metros earned letters last year. Leading the starters is sophomore guard Ron Angevine (6-0) with a 14.8 scoring average. He netted 23 points against the
Upcoming Games Wright State hits the road for the third time this season and faces its second straight opponent from Indianapolis. Indiana Central provides the opposition on Wednesday at Nicoson Hall. The Greyhounds are under first-year c'Jach Bill Keller who lettered at Purdue and played guard for the Indiana Pacers from 1969-77.
The Greyhounds are a relatively young team with hopes of rebuilding a program that finished with a 7-19 record last season. The 'Hounds were 4-3 through December action , facing Butler tonight on ICU's home court. The only double figure scorer back from last season is senior guard Randy Mutschler who averaged 15.2 last year.
Next home game for the Raiders is one week from tonight when they face the third straight team from Indianapolis, Marian. The last time WSU met the Knights was in 1976-77 and the result was a 55-52 win in Indianapolis.

Raiders last year with 17 coming in the first half when WSU led only 49-47 at the break. Other starters include seniors Mike Herr (6-2 , 11.9 ppg .) and Haywood Garrett (6-4, 5.9 ppg.) , and juniors Kim King (5-11, 12.4 ppg.) and Reggie Butler (6-8 , 7.1 ppg.). Senior guard Randy Wilkes is scoring 6.4 points per game primarily as a sub, although he did start one game.
Experience already has paid dividends for IUPUI this year with three wins by four points or less. However, the Metros also dropped close games to unbeaten Cedarville (72-71) and Hanover (71-68).
Raider senior Eddie Crowe became the all-time assist leader with 358 career assists . He now has 37 this season in eight games. The old record was 352 by Rick Martin who played from 1972-76. Crowe also took over eighth place on the career scoring list with 891 points thus far . His next hurdle is Tim Walker with 1,009 points . Crowe's career average of 10.4 per game also is eighth best .
Sharp-shooting Rodney Benson continues to lead the Raider scoring attack with a 20.3 average. A tribute to his consistency this season is shooting better than 50 percent from the field in every game and a low-game point output of 15 against Miami. His field goal percentage of 64.9 is among the Division II leaders in the country.
Speaking of NCAA statistics, Wright State was ranked No. 2 in the nation in both scoring margin and scoring offense in the latest listing . WSU is currently averaging a record-breaking 92.0 points per game and outscoring its opponents by 19. 7.
Opponent turnovers continue to mount against the full court press with 26.8 per game. On the other hand, Underhill set a goal of only 15 per game by the Raiders, but they are currently averaging 17.8 ... 31 coming against Eastern Illinois. Only Bellarmine (15) has committed less than 20 turnovers against WSU this season.
One of the most productive players in terms of points per minutes played has been senior Jeff Bragg. The 6-5 swing man has 58 points (73 ppg.) in 99 minutes for an 0.58 point per minute average. Only Benson 's 0.75 average is better among the regulars .
The Raiders will be seeking their fourth straight win over IUPUI after losing the first game in the series back in 1976-77. That game was played in the PE Building but WSU won the last game at home, 117-64, in 1978-79.

Each year the Alumni Association is proud to present the traditional awards to senior athletes and others for their outstanding participation on our university's intercollegiate teams. Our support and recognition of progress is not limited to plaques and handshakes, however. Look for the Game Ball Raffle Ticket Sales which pay for the team 's basketballs. Notice who is sitting around you in the stands- many alumni are buying discount season tickets through the Association.
