EDITORIALJunior Final Series – Issue 4, August 26th 2018
By MATTHEW DUCK As we enter Week 4 of Junior Finals and what is ultimately the final day of the junior season, it’s an ideal opportunity to reflect on the season and acknowledge the many people that contributed to its success. A record 296 junior teams competed in the WRFL this year, up from 273 junior teams last year. From coaches to team managers to club officials, as well as parents, guardians and families that provide support, local community football really does rely on the efforts of so many to thrive. On behalf of the WRFL, I thank all such volunteers for their efforts. On the final day of the junior season, we are of course focused on the teams that have played abundantly successful seasons. Whichever way the chips fall for the respective teams today, there can be no doubt that making a Grand Final is an enormous achievement in itself. But oftentimes it’s the more challenging experiences that I think ultimately have a greater bearing on the adults that we become.Growing up in a small farming town in Gippsland, I played for a club called Hill End, and it’s fair to say my junior football career wasn’t filled with success! The season I remember most, was when I was maybe 13 or 14 years old. The team was 0-16 after 16 rounds, and barely getting within 100 points of any other side. We were so far off the mark that after one game we sang the club song despite losing by over 10 goals, such was the feeling of achievement for having gotten ‘so close’! In the final round of the season, Hill End lined up against local rival Boolarra. Our team trailed all day, and went into the final quarter down by four goals. Considering the team had struggled to kick four goals over an entire season, the chances of us doing it in one quarter were obviously slim. But our coach at the time, Bob, was so positive in his three-quarter time speech, and the support around the team was the same as it had been all year – amazingly positive. I remember vividly the energy of the group as we walked back onto the ground. We proceeded to kick four goals to none in the last quarter and won by 1 point – the team’s first and only win for the season. That season was by all measures ‘unsuccessful’. There were no finals for us, and certainly no silverware. Yet it’s the season I remember the most, as the support and positive energy for the team from coach, team manager and parents alike was unsurpassed. I guess the moral of the story is that no matter where the team that you were involved with finished this year, you played a greater part in shaping the lives of the kids involved than you may ever truly know.I wish all players the best of luck today, and to all supporters – cheer loudly and proudly, but represent your club with class.

WRFL JUNIOR FINALS SEASON 2018 23
UMPIRES CORNER
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR OPPORTUNITIESBy GRAEME HODGART
Some clubs and their winning teams are still in celebratory moods after their successes in the junior Grand Finals from last weekend. Others are still coming to grips with their unexpected or expected loss.
Today, more ‘battles’ are to take place across the west. With each game another little piece of history is added to the archives of the WRFL.
On the eve of the Grand Finals, Director of Umpiring Mark Westgarth, told the collected group of umpires that they were indeed fortunate. Many umpires would be needed to conduct all the finals from the Under 11 grade right up to the Division 1 Senior level.
Mark explained that while many players go through an entire football career and never get to play in a Grand Final, the opportunity to officiate in a Grand Final presents itself each year to many umpires.
This season the WRFL will conduct 26 Grand Finals, which will see about 200 field, boundary and goal umpires involved.
Back in 2001 things in the WRFL were slightly different. St.Albans defeated Hoppers Crossing by 42 points to win the big one while Spotswood took the honours in the Reserves. There were only 15 Grand Finals and 90 umpires were needed to officiate in those games. It is interesting to note that there are 15 umpires on the 2001 list that are still involved in WRFL umpiring in 2018.
Six have moved into the coaching of umpires while the other nine are still foot soldiers. Also listed in 2001 are Drew Kowalski, Shane Jones, Chris Esler, Darren Mills, Tim Morrison
and Michael Craig. All these are either former AFL umpires or are still umpiring at the highest level.
As the last of the Junior Grand Finals are played today, who knows if there is an AFL star or two in the making. Likewise with the umpires, there may be a field umpire, a boundary rider or a flag waver that will eventually make it into the big time.
Hopefully in today’s Grand Finals there are many displays of brilliance, endeavour and skill. Then at the end of each game, there will be the glorious celebrations for some, but also the crushing heartache for others. Let us all remember that, in reality, it is just a game.
Possibly a little bit of empathy will need to be on hand. May these traditional words wash over each match: ‘Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.’
QUIZA forward kicks the ball which strikes the goal post. What happens next?
(a) The goal umpire hits the post three times above head height, taps their chest three times and then signals a behind with their hand.
(b) The goal umpire taps their chest three times, hits the post three times above head height and then signals a behind with their hand.
(c) The goal umpire taps their chest three times, signals a behind with their hand and then hits the post three times above head height.
The correct answer is (c).
