Winter 2012 Wrapping Up 2012 Dear friends and colleagues, The fall semester has been a busy time at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Much of our focus over the past several months has been preparation for a site visit for an eight year re-accreditation of our Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. That site visit occurred last week. The School of Pharmacy, as you will read in the newsletter below, continues to be a thriving center for pharmacy education, practice, research, and community outreach. I look forward to hearing from you with your ideas on how to further improve upon our already stellar institution. In the spirit of expertise, influence, and impact, Natalie D. Eddington, PhD, FAAPS, FCP Professor and Dean FY12 Research Funding I'm excited to report that our School's annual research funding increased by 8.4 percent over the previous fiscal year. Our total research awards for FY12 climbed to $18 million, 5 percent of which was contributed by new investigators. Although federal and corporate funding declined slightly, we noticed a doubling of funding from research foundations. Over the past 5 years, our

overall research funding has increased steadily by 19 percent,including an average annual 1 percent increase in NationalInstitutes of Health funding. In the current economic climate,this is an outstanding performance by our faculty andexemplifies the high-impact research carried out at our School.

Alexander MacKerell, PhD, our Grollman-GlickProfessor in Pharmaceutical Sciences anddirector of the Computer-Aided Drug DesignCenter, was named the University of Maryland,Baltimore's Research Lecturer of the Year.

Mary Lynn McPherson, PharmD, professor ofpharmacy practice and science, was named theUniversity of Maryland, Baltimore's Teacher ofthe Year. Both Drs. All Alumni Reunion DayOn Oct. 20, the Schoolwelcomed back nearly 100alumni for our first ever AllAlumni Reunion Day. Theday began with twocontinuing educationcourses, followed by a crabfeast and barbeque,Student GovernmentAssociation fair, tours of the School, and research posterpresentations from our graduate students. PhD alumni andmilestone class years enjoyed smaller receptions at off-sitelocations later that evening. Vote & VaxOn Nov. 6, members ofmany of our StudentGovernment Associationorganizations once againparticipated in the nationalVote & Vax initiative byadministering free seasonalflu vaccines at locationsnear polling sites in AnneArundel and Prince George's Counties. Their first initiative in2010 was such a success that it was recognized with an awardfrom the Maryland Immunization Partnership. This year, ourstudents administered 221 vaccines. Read more...

On Jan. 1, Fred Abramson, BSP '56,RPh,an assistant professor of pharmacypractice and science, will retire from theSchool of Pharmacy after 30 years ofservice. Fred is well-known to and well-lovedby many faculty, staff, students, and alumniwho have had the privilege to work with himor be taught by him in our communitypharmacy practice lab, affectionately knownat the School as "Fred Lab." Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science andInnovation Hosts First "CERSI Day "

The University of Maryland Center of Excellence in RegulatoryScience and Innovation (M-CERSI), established in 2011 as acollaboration between the University of Maryland, Baltimore andthe University of Maryland, College Park, hosted its first CERSIDay in early September to bring together representatives ofacademia, industry, and the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) to share ideas and information on how to jumpstart thescientific innovation needed to improve the regulatory processfor new medications and medical devices. James Polli, PhD,our Shangraw/Noxell Endowed Chair of Industrial Pharmacy andPharmaceutics in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences,is co-principal investigator for CERSI, which was formed with aninitial $1 million grant from the FDA. Two New Master's Programs at the School The School has launched a new Master's Program inPharmacometrics with plans to start a Master's Program inRegulatory Science in the Fall of 2013. Under the leadership of Joga Gobburu, PhD, a professor ofpharmacy practice and science, the School is now offering aMaster's in Pharmacometrics, which is designed for workingprofessionals who want to cultivate their skills in the emergingfield of pharmacometrics. The program started in Septemberwith a first class of 28 students. Learn more about our Master's

of Pharmacometrics Program. Our second new Master's program, in the area of regulatoryscience, will launch in the fall of 2013 under the direction ofJames Polli, PhD, our Shangraw/Noxell Endowed Chair inIndustrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics. The program ispending approval from the Maryland Higher EducationCommission but we anticipate accepting applications inFebruary. The online program is designed for professionalsworking in industry who want to contribute to drug regulationand pharmaceutical product lifecycles. The School of Pharmacy's chapter of Lambda KappaSigma was named the 2012 Outstanding CollegiateChapter of the Year and the 2012 Outstanding AlumniChapter of the Year.Abdalla Aly, a graduate student in the Department ofPharmaceutical Health Services Research, has beenselected as one of UM President Perman's Fellows forthe 2012-2013 academic year. Aly joins nine otherfellows to promote interdisciplinary education and civilityon campus.Nancy Bowers, director of administration and finance,has been elected co-secretary of the Council ofUniversity System Staff.Nicole Brandt, PharmD, an associate professor ofpharmacy practice and science, has been named asection editor of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing'sColumn on Geropharmacology.Heather Congdon, PharmD, an assistant professor ofpharmacy practice and science and assistant dean forShady Grove, was accepted into the AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Pharmacy's AcademicLeadership Fellows Program.Bethany DiPaula, PharmD, an associate professor ofpharmacy practice and science, was appointed to theAmerican Society of Health-System Pharmacists'Section Advisory Group on Preceptor SkillsDevelopment.Suzanne Doyon, MD, medical director of the MarylandPoison Center, received first place in the MarylandHealth Data Innovation Contest.Sarah Dutcher, a graduate student in the Department ofPharmaceutical Health Services Research, received thedepartment's Dr. Arthur Schwartz Memorial ScholarshipAward and received a pre-doctoral fellowship from theAmerican Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education.Natalie D. Technology and Education.Maureen Kane, PhD, an assistant professor ofpharmaceutical sciences, was named the School ofPharmacy's American Association of Colleges ofPharmacy Teacher of the Year.Katie Kiser, PharmD, an assistant professor ofpharmacy practice and science, has been namedtreasurer of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy'sAmbulatory Care Practice and Research Network.Mary Lynn McPherson, PharmD, a professor ofpharmacy practice and science, has been appointed byGovernor Martin O'Malley to the State Council for End ofLife Care in Maryland.Jill Morgan, PharmD, associate dean for studentaffairs and associate professor of pharmacy practice andscience, has been named chair of the AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Pharmacy's Special InterestGroup on Student Services.Diwura Owolabi, a fourth-year student pharmacist, hasbeen named member-at-large of the American College ofClinical Pharmacy's National StuNet AdvisoryCommittee.Emily Reese, a graduate student in the Department ofPharmaceutical Health Services Research, received apre-doctoral fellowship in health outcomes from thePharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of AmericaFoundation.Magaly Rodriguez de Bittner, PharmD, professor andchair of pharmacy practice and science, has beenappointed to the International PharmaceuticalFederation's Academic Pharmacy Section AdvisoryCouncil.David Roffman, PharmD, a professor of pharmacypractice and science, has been named to the Board ofPharmacy Specialties' Practice Analysis Taskforce inCardiology.Paul Shapiro, PhD, associate professor ofpharmaceutical sciences, has been appointed chair of aNational Institutes of Health Study Section.Fadia Shaya, PhD, a professor of pharmaceuticalhealth services research, has been named director ofresearch and outreach for the School's Center forInnovative Pharmacy Solutions and has been named astanding member of the Agency for Healthcare Researchand Quality's Healthcare Systems and Value Researchstudy section.James Trovato, PharmD, an associate professor ofpharmacy practice and science, has been named chairof the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists'House of Delegates for 2012-2013.Ting Wang, a graduate student in the Department ofPharmaceutical Sciences, received a research fellowshipfrom the United States Pharmacopeia.Jeremy Yap, a graduate student in the Department ofPharmaceutical Sciences, received a pre-doctoralfellowship award from the American Chemical Society's
