Their previous code received a “C” grade by Corpedia, the industry leader in governance, risk and compliance education and communication. The objective was to write and design a code that not only met their internal goals of educating employees about expected behaviors, but earn an “A” grade from Corpedia. Solution: After a thorough review of company policies, we developed key messages, which aligned with the CEO’s central message of acting with integrity. The messages were also in alignment with other ethics and compliance training programs. • Do what’s right, report what’s wrong • Retaliation is not tolerated • It is easy to make an anonymous report Even though the policies highlighted in the code were written in easy-to-understand language, we also wove questions- and-answers throughout the document to show how the policies should be incorporated into everyday decisions. To show alignment with the company’s value statement, each section highlighted which company values were relevant to the topic. The values statement clearly outlines how WPX expects employees to do business. The Code of Business Conduct gives the details. PDF was also placed on the intranet, with a link from the homepage. The PDF includes hyperlinks to the policies referenced and to the website for making anonymous reports. For transparency with shareholders, customers and vendors, a copy was also placed on the public website. Results: The new Code of Business Conduct scored an “A” across all eight categories by Corpedia. When compared to other codes across the nation, the new WPX Code ranked in the fourth percentile of all Energy & Utilities Industry codes reviewed by Corpedia, and within the second percentile when benchmarked against the 2,500 codes in the Corpedia database. This project was honored with the international IABC Gold Quill and a local IABC Best of Show and Award of Excellence. The Code was part of the total business ethics package that WPX was honored for when they won the OK Ethics 2014 Compass Award.
