Special activities and memorabilia will feature when the Whittlesea Show celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. It’s on Friday, November 6, to Sunday, November 8, at the Whittlesea Showgrounds. Horse-drawn vehicles, the main means of transport for many years, will take centre stage while special classes in all areas with a touch of yesteryear will be included, along with historical photos and commemorative merchandise.The usual show jumping, wood chopping competition, food expo, carnival rides, show bags, stage entertainment and more will be there. The show is open Saturday 9am-7pm and Sunday 9am-5pm. Entry $5 adults, $3 kids 6-14 years.

Some of Melbourne’s most exciting jazz outfi ts will be part of a swinging afternoon and evening of jazz in the park at the Hawkstowe picnic area in South Morang on Sunday, November 15, 3-7pm. Among the performances, St Monica’s College’s Senior Jazz Combo will team with St Monica’s Vocal Ensemble, while Out For The Count Swing Band and Cheek To Cheek Trio will also be on stage. At Hawkstowe Picnic Area, Plenty Gorge Park, Gordons Rd, South Morang (Melway 183 H8). Free parking, local food and beverages or BYO picnic gear. Entry $2 each. Pre-booked group of 10 or more $10. With about 17 families a week moving into the City of Whittlesea, it’s little wonder it is host to a homes expo focused on sustainable living and the environment. At the Sustainable Homes Expo you can see a range of new products including the latest designs in solar hot water systems, lighting, heating, double glazing, insulation, water tanks and pumps. Experts will answer all of your questions about the products on display, plus specialists in sustainable gardening, water recycling and energy conservation will provide guidance. The expo is on November 22, from 10am-5pm at the council offi ces in South Morang. Admission is free.

The St Francis Family Fair will be held on November 29. It’s at the St Francis of Assisi Parish school (next to the Stables shopping centre in Childs Rd, Mill Park) from 10am to 4pm. Details: St Francis of Assisi parish 9407 3190.

Each year on the last weekend in November, the Whittlesea and Northern District Art Show offers an exhibition and sale of works by prominent local and visiting artists. It’s held at the Mechanics Hall in Forest St, Whittlesea (Melway 246 G9).Details: 9715 1665.

Unite the community spirit with song. With performances by the Community Choir, Diamond Valley Brass Band and numerous local dance and performance groups, the annual Carols by Candlelight will be held at Mill Park’s Redleap Reserve on Friday, December 11, from 7-10pm. The free event can be enjoyed by the whole family. Special guests include Santa and his Christmas elves. Food and complimentary candles are available throughout the night. A huge show for the children is on at the Plenty Ranges Art and Convention Centre on December 2 at 10am and 12.30pm. Get along to see Dorothy the Dinosaur’s Rockin’ Christmas. Join Dorothy the Dinosaur and her friends Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus as Dorothy meets the man in red from the North Pole in a new live show. Celebrate Australia Day on the lawns of the Whittlesea Council offi ces, with family entertainment and musical performances. This is a great time to welcome new citizens and honour local citizens with the presentation of the Australia Day Awards. It kicks off at 6pm and fi nishes at about 9pm with a fi reworks display.
